scott mcgrew says it takes apple less than an hour. >> apple has become the most important company in america, one of the most important in american history making so much money it is honestly hard to grasp. the company announcing it made $46 billion in the last quarter. that's $511 million every single day where or as you pointed out, $20 million and change per hour. this is the second-biggest amount of quarterly revenue in american history behind exxon mobil. $37 million iphones, 15 million ipads. i put together a couple different ways of look being at these numbers. apple made more money last quarter than it made in all of the year 2009. 75% of apple's income comes from iphone and ipad. neither of which existed five years ago. apple is the single-largest buyer of chips in the world. it sold more ipads than hp did computers, and here's my favorite one -- little morning math for you. if you added together the quarterly revenue of microsoft, plus two googles and three yahoo!s, you'd have one apple. all of this comes less than two days after a cutting article in the "new york times" cr

scott mcgrew joins us.loser to the ipf. >> one step but plenty after that so the most accurate thing to say might be facebook is getting ready to get ready to start beginning to file for its ipo. people could come as early as this week asking to file for the first offering of public shares, easily the most important ipo since google. actual trades wouldn't come for months. the other thing happening right now, european leaders meeting for the 17th time about the crisis there. and i'm not being glib, this is the 17th meeting. germany pushing for other countries to make huge cuts in spending and you can see how that's turning over with the regular man on the street. this is a strike in brussels where the actual meeting is taking place, train stations, bus lines, shut down in a nationwide strike. federal prosecutors issued a letter warning that data collected on servers of mega upload could be deleted as soon as thursday. it shut down on piracy accusations and millions of dollars seized by washington. now the c

here's scott mcgrew. >> good morning.ook will no longer let people trade shares in the secondary market behind the scenes. facebook isn't on the stock market, but it still has shares it hands out to employees. those employees can sell the shares. the company sold huge blocks of shares to early investors as well. and those are bought and sold all the time. bloomberg reports facebook has called a halt to all of those trades. why? perhaps because facebook is getting ready to file the paperwork associated with an ipo. the paperwork will contain what up until now was very private information about facebook's business and facebook wants to make sure there are no conflicts of interest. no appearance of insider trading before the filing. facebook has thrown the switch on timelines. they are now mandatory. in seven days, everyone on facebook gets a timeline. unless you make adjustments, everything you ever did or said on facebook will be visible. not a big deal if you're older, but if you started in college, that could be a proble

. >>> scott mcgrew says a los gatos company horrified investors last year and so far has had a pretty sweet 2012. >> reporter: good morning to you. i know i talk about netflix a whole lot. such an interesting company lately. in the last week, netflix stock is up 22%. yes, 22%. 7% today alone and netflix has been dealing with some fairly bad news, including a report that hbo will no longer sell its dvd disks. the other thing that's really interesting today is the unemployment report. take a look at the numbers. 200,000 jobs added to the american economy in december. that knocks the unemployment rate down to 8.5%, good news indeed. you would think wall street would react super well to that. that is really solid news. but the markets have been mostly lower this morning on concern over europe. the biggest concern is actually hungary. that country says it is within just a few days of running out of money. >> scott, thank you. >> ford is launching a tomorrowland of sorts here in the bay area, driving innovation into future cars. we'll be talking about that a little bit later in the show. >>

scott mcgrew tells us what tim cook said. >> good morning.everal people at apple tell us, ceo tim cook sent a company wide e-mail after that very critical "new york times" article on thursday. this is the article we talked about yesterday. it took an toll task for poor factory conditions in china, including deadly accidents. cook in e-mail to employees called the article offensive and defended the company, but there are lots of indications in the e-mail that cook is making changes, and takes the problem much more seriously than his predecessor did. every year we inspect more factories, raising the bar for our partners and we'll continue to dig deeper and we will undoubtedly find more issues. now last week, apple issued its latest self-assessment of factory conditions finding many factory workers were overworked. but finding fewer child labors than previous years. apple, for the first time, also released a lit of its suppliers though didn't say which suppliers violated which rules. >>> san ramon based chevron says profits in the previous quart

turning to business and tech right now, scott mcgrew says he is cautiously optimistic about the economy turning around this morning. that's unusual for a guy who worries so much. >> well, good morning to you. you know, i have a bit of a reputation of being a pessimist when it comes to the economy, particularly in real estate. but when it comes to jobs, i think we are seeing more slivers of good news. just now today, we got information that 375,000 people showed up at the unemployment office for the first time this week or this past week. that's good news. any number under 400,000 is considered good news. the big number will come tomorrow from the labor department. at 5:30 our time when we get the monthly unemployment rate for december. that's tomorrow. yahoo! shares still trading lower this morning a day after news the yahoo! will have a new ceo, scott thompson of paypal. the head of e pay, the parent company says he'll take over for thompson at paypal and still run ebay too, another sign perhaps that ebay is realizing the most important thing it does isn't ebay, it's paypal. >>> if you

walnut creek where 150 workers have been sent packing, but we begin with business and tech reporter scott mcgrewour newsroom. why are more closures getting worse? >> perhaps, marlo because we tried to make them better. the data from realty track say foreclosures in 2012 will be more numerous because back in 20 len those same foreclosures were delayed by legal action and delayed by the investigation into roberobeo signing by banks the federal government and states and banks worked to give families a second chance with longer grace periods and reduction in principle. it would appear those delays, though, while reducing the number of foreclosures in 2011 just shifted the numbers into 2012. realty track says around 3% of california homes will face foreclosure this year. that doesn't sound like a whole lot, but the average subdivision in the south bay has about 40 homes per city block. for every two and a half city blocks three families lose their homes and that's a lot. even people involved in the mortgage and foreclosure process are suffering. you may know the word pmi from your own mortgage. bob r

scott mcgrew says that's forcing hollywood to rethink its strategy. >> good morning to you. head of the motion picture association of america and former senator, chris dodd, suggests this morning that hollywood and silicon valley get together to discuss a new set of laws to address piracy online. now that set off eye-rolling on the internet, perhaps critic says hollywood and silicon valley should have been working together all along. shares in google lost $50 right off the top as the market opened this morning. the company reporting huge profit but was less than wall street hoped. thursday i told you to look for two things, possibly revenue above $3 billion. they didn't get that. and then to watch for costs. and costs were up, around 10%. that helped sink the stock. >>> the head of foxco seems to have called his employees, all 1 million, animals. this was reported by a newspaper that's been critical of foxcon, reporting tony gau at a fund-raiser for zoo, made a joke comparing his job to a zookeeper, reportedly pointing out people are animals and technically, he's responsible

scott mcgrew joins us now live from the newsroom. >> technology was going to replace textbooks. thomas edison. he said the film projector would replace textbooks. apple is just the latest to try to replace the paper book in schools announcing this in new york city this morning, partnering with four major textbook makers which account for 90% of texts in schools. these are texts that apple will have ready that kids are using now, algebra i. apple will convert from paper to digital and the company will give processors new tools to put their lectures online. here's a great physics lecture apple showed off. >> i'm going to close my eyes. i don't want to see it. and i'm going to count down from 3 to 0. three, two, one, zero. . >> scott mcgrew says more controversy this morning over the factory in china that makes everythingm your iphone to your box. >> the company in china seems to have called his employees all one million of them animals. the slight was first reported in the china daily, a newspaper that's critical of fox conin the past. he made a joke comparinging his job to a zookeeper saying people are animals and he is responsible for the feeding and well being of a million animals. the comment is causing back lash. but you need to be a little cautious. critics in the west reacting to an english translation of a comment in chinese as reported by a newspaper. a lot can be lost in the process but still probably a dumb thing to say. the fbi working with police have busted and shut down a website hollywood accused of storing pirated movies and music, called mega upload. did it seem to contain pirates movies. celebrities used it. here you see the four in custody. it was an online locker to be used for good or evil. a slap in the face to supporters of laws. proving piracy can be stopped with current laws.
