scott mcgrew says the south bay outpacing the rest of california. good morning, scott. >> good morning. mostly good news in the latest once a year report, john, from joint venture silicon valley, really the best snapshot we have of the south bay economy. it says employment is back to 2006 levels after the valley added a staggering 42,000 jobs last year. this puts us far ahead of the rest of other regions when you think about it as job growth per capita. so here are some numbers for you. the unemployment rate in silicon valley estimated at 8.3%. that's the same as the unemployment rate nationwide. so why do we get so excited by that? remember, we live in, where generally the economy is still terrible. california's unemployment rate is 11%. now, if you're in silicon valley but you're not feeling any of the benefit i'm talking about, you are not alone. this same report says the good times are not shared by everybody. families who make a high income account for nearly half of all homes in silicon valley. and their income is going up. but those who don't

scott mcgrew says it's a bit of fun in an otherwise nervous market. >>> well, good morning to you. the dow crossed 13,000 mark at about 8:25 our time this morning. nobody enjoys a good dow crossing more than our friends at cnbc. here's how they reacted -- >> for the first time since may 20th on an intraday basis, the dow is above 13,000. i -- no one i'd rather be with on the floor at this moment. what does it mean? what does it mean to the market? what does it say about the journey, the country, the world has been on for four years? >> i can answer that, carl. the dow hasn't been that high since 2008 but in many ways it's a lousy index. only tracks 30 stocks so it's not a good indication of overall markets. not as good as, say, s&p 500 which tracks 500 stocks but, hey, it's fun. other news, the network abc has gotten access to controversial factories that make iphones, ipads and other apple products. it going to air a special tonight on night line. foxconn products make product for other high-tech companies the recent suicide, deaths and worker conditions have put a pressure on app

scott mcgrew joins us. >> dell may be a computer maker, it is based out of texas. it's getting bigger. dell has 250 workers on great america parkway in santa clara. here is video from october when they opened it up. the company will expand this summer and that will allow the company to add 600 more employees to its silicon valley hub. eventually dell expects to have 1500 workers in santa clara. sony has a new chief and on his first day on the job wednesday he had to tell the world that sony lost more than $2 billion thanks mostly to weak tv sales. this is something to keep in mind as apple considers selling its own tvs. sony had to deal with the flooding in thailand where many suppliers work f. your currency is strong it makes products more expensive. the president will call on yahoo!. oliver knox comes from french news wire. speaking of the french, a judge in france says that google is breaking french law by providing free maps of france. the judge says google has to pay french map makers because they are selling fewer maps. this morning we know more about faceboo

scott mcgrew joins us.ots of reporters wanted into those plants. >> some chinese newspapers have gotten inside. that's how we heard of the suicides. and chinese television got close after a plant exploded, killing three people. but this will be the first time a major tour of the plant will be conducted by an american news crew. abc will feature the show tonight on its nightline program. there is some fuss over this because abc is so closely related to apple. the ceo of disney, abc's owner, sits on apple's board. the ceo of -- steve jobs, the largest shareholder sat on the board as well. in a blog posting abc writes that there are one of four possibilities why he got chose tune go inside. one, he says, i said nice things about apple on air. two, abc's owned by disney and bob iger sits on the board. the steve jobs trust is disney's largest share holder or four t amle enjoys nightline. it doesn't matter why abc was chosen because he will write the story the way he sees fit but it's history in the making. deadl

scott mcgrew says silicon valley has recovered to employment levels not seen since 2006. he continues our coverage now. and scott, i guess we can thank apple for many jobs. >> yeah, they call it the app economy. economist michael mandel tried to figure out how many jobs were created when apple decided to open up its iphone to outside developers. we start with zero in 2007. this is before the iphone is introduced to nearly a half million now. now, sometimes it's hard to figure out what actual economic growth and what's actually just people moving from job to job. but in this case, it is pure growth. because five years ago, this industry didn't exist. now, those jobs don't have to be in the bay area. there's no rule you have to make apps here in town. but the bay area has done an excellent job of keeping apps local. stanford, one of the best places to learn computer science, venture capital firms like perkins have set aside special cap -- or cash, rather, to fund app companies. and as we were reporting earlier, silicon valley is outpacing the rest of the nation in job growt

business and tech reporter scott mcgrew is in the newsroom with the leaked details.ott, this really beats the republicans to the punch. >> it really does, jon. what president obama is suggesting is that the corporate tax rate be reduced from 35% to 28%. political analysts say there's little chance of any of this getting accomplished, especially in a republican controlled congress, because that would mean the republicans would be handing president obama a major victory just ahead of the presidential elections. now in addition to the tax cut, the president's plan would also reduce a great number of corporate tax loopholes. here you see mr. obama speaking at boeing last week. did boeing pay 35% corporate tax last year? no. boeing paid no corporate tax last year. corporations are able to avoid american taxes in two ways and the president's plan would get rid of both. first, if they make money overseas, they keep that money overseas. for instance, hewlett-packard. hp is an american company based here but a lot of its business is done in other countries. germany's hp selli

business and tech reporter scott mcgrew live with what this could mean for you. >> good morning.onestly, it could mean little. not totally a done deal but it looks as if california has signed off on a multi-state agreement with some of the largest banks to collect its share of 26 billion. sounds like a lot but remember, americans have millions of americans are under water with their homes, they have fallen behind on payments or foreclosed on. some people will get help, the times estimating that a family kicked out by foreclosure might get a check for $2,000 within three years. we don't know all of the specifics because of now there is no finished deal. one estimate says banks would have to forgive 700 dtds billion in principle to bring everyone back to even. but we're talking about 26 billion in the deal, one of the reasons that california was hesitant to climb on. banks hope that they sign off on this deal. it would be harder for states attorneys general to pursuit other shoots against them. when we know more we'll tell you. >> speaking of banks, the bay area job market got more

scott mcgrew joins us.hose companies used to get along. >> they used to share a board member until google got in the steve business and steve jobs said he would spend every last pen tee destroy google. google has been accused this morning of monkeying with apple's safari web browser, fooling it into letting google track web user surfing habits. safari is popular on the iphone. and the particulars here are extremely technical. so i'm not going to get into them but google denies this. bottom line, another big fight brewing between mountainview and cupertino that will probably end up in the courts, even worse will probably attract the attention of federal regulators as well. jon, no love lost between these two companies. >> clearly. we'll keep an eye on that one. >> keep an eye in the sky. meteorologist christina loren. >> they are clear out there this morning. we don't have fog yet. i think a little will start to drift in as we head through the next couple of hours. right now visibility good across the board.

that's a big number, scott mcgrew. and history being made. >> right. cupertino company the most valuable in the world. if you take all of the outstanding shares of apple multiply by the share price. it's market capitalization. $502.60. 468 billion. to compare to exxon, 400 billion. there are a couple of take aways. this happened under tim cook, not steve jobs so. the company continues to grow even after it lost its founder. second, apple shares jumped in the last year. apple in the words of one analyst adding the value of facebook in the last 12 months. and lastly, scott budman points out apple is a gadget company yet more valuable than companies that make things that people need like oil. apple yesterday started permitting independent inspectors into its factories. apple doesn't own the factories in shenzhen but has come under criticism for the poor working conditions there. 22 million people watched video of a dad shooting his daughter's lap top with a gun after she complained about him on facebook. last night dad released a statement saying the news

scott mcgrew has the latest business headlines. >> good morning. k.hiller one of most trusted real estate reports says home prices if san francisco fell another .8 in the last three months measured. for the total of 2011 the average home in san francisco lost 5.4% of its value. the san francisco mark the way k. shiller considers it includes the city in the east bay but not the south bay. also measures the 20 largest markets. when you combine all of them national home prices fell a little bit more than 4%. a mixed bag on wall street. the latest consumer confidence numbers saying people are feeing optimistic. oil prices have fallen and you have a better day on the markets because of it. pulling the other way durable goods fell more than expected. those are things that last a long time, like refrigerators or planes. yahoo! accusing facebook of taking yahoo!'s ideas, one of those patent fights. this comes an awkward time for facebook. facebook can't launch a pr push to address the accusations because it's in its quiet period before its ipo. back to you. >

scott mcgrew joins us. a growing controversy. >> it really is, laura, good morning.gress has gotten involved it came to everyone's attention when an obscure social network was caught uploading users' address books without explicit information. they apologized and deleted the data but bloggers looked at other apps and found out many did the same thing. that's when members of congress sent apple a letter asking what's going on here. obviously neither path nor apple wants to be the subject of a congressional investigation. apple says it will better enforce the fine print, apps are not allowed to do what path did. that could be a big problem, though, because many of the apps on your phone may already be in violation. now the brouhaha also caused something close to civil war among tech bloggers. some nick builten of "new york times" took the side of consumers. others said the whole thing was blown out of proportion. the problem is some of the bloggers downplaying the controversy are also investors in companies like path. this is a relatively new phenomenon. bloggers who i
