i'm scott mcgrew. yelp certainly made a lot of news this past week. it and angie's list, great places to find a plumber or a painter. but there is a competitor hot on their tail. it's called redbeacon. founded by a group of google alums. it won't be ipo-ing because redbeacon was just snapped up by home improvement chain the home depot. financial terms were not disclosed. redbeacon allows homeowners to post potential jobs on a website or mobile app. jobs like house painting. then take bids from home contractors and handymen. >> and the kids from google brought in experienced help to run the company. he's anthony rodio, ceo of redbeacon. not his first -- this is his first ceo job. he has many years of experience, though, at stub hub, amazon, microsoft, joined by eric savitz and john swartz. ubs said about the acquisition by the home depot they liked it because of the strong management, the analysts said, aredbeacon. that must have made you feel pretty good. >> it's better than being the other way around, anyway, better than being despite management. so

business and tech reporter scott mcgrew with the $1 billion dilemma. scott?yeah, $98 billion total cash, $45 billion of it apple will spend. apple up 2% this morning, or about $11.63. which is really when you think about it astounding. up 2%, we've had days where it was up 2% where nothing happened. here the company is going to spend $45 billion in its cash hoard on both the stock buyback purchase program and a shares dividend, as well. so details. $2.65 a share as going out in the fourth quarter. the $10 billion stock purchase program starting in the beginning of next year and going for three years. now, laura, we got some news about employees. employees who have not yet vested will be able to participate. that's terrific news. tim cook doesn't get to. the other one is somebody asked this call just ended, what about dividend growth? could this number, $2.65 change? and yes, indeed, apple is prepared to change that number as time moves on. but again, apple paying a dividend technically for the second time in the company's history. they went into that malaise

but scott mcgrew says soon your boss may force you to, is that right? >> the fancy term is consumerization of i.t., people like using consumer level technology. businesses were resistant to that idea but are adopting it like this doctor's office which uses an app to take patient records. a few years from now ipads may be issued to employees and that is good news for apple. apple stock is down slightly this morning. but take a look at this chart. this is over the last couple of months. you can notice from february until now apple stock has jumped more than 100. steve wozniak stayed dry by heading down to los angeles to get his huh i pad, delighting people at century city. >> thank you, thank you. all happy about the apple products, meant so much in their life and they tell stories about themselves and what they do. i meet a lot of people, a lot of autograph signing and photographs. it's just -- it's easy for me. >> marla, often spotted in his hometown los gados. a nice guy. stood in line for his own ipad 3. >> that's great of him. good guy. thank you, sc

scott mcgrew has a look at a pair of hot new offerings. >> reporter: an inside look early this morning from vosara communications as the san jose company offered shares to the general public for the first time. shares that skyrocketed in early trading up better than 35%. today was a big day for the company. it's been a long time in coming. a lot of people have spent a lot of time and effort in making this happen. we went public today. >> when i first started working here, there was 12 of us in a little 2100 square foot office in cupertino. to go from that to this is amazing, just amazing to see it happen. >> reporter: and vocera, which makes wireless communication devices for hospitals, wasn't the only bay area company to hit the market. ann annie's, inc., trading under bnny is an organic food manufacturer and gained more than 70% in early trading. still to come this week the ipo of cafe press a company that's been around since 1999 and will finally start offering shares to the public. >> that was our business and tech reporter scott mcgrew reporting. >>> it sounds like a sweet gig. ma

. >> i think scott mcgrew already has his ticket. all right. -- the senate has passed its version of a jobs act, scott mcgrew says has very little to do with jobs. >> good morning. this is a change to the way that finance works really. it creates jobs, if it does, that's a nice side benefit. the word jobs in the jobs act doesn't even mean employment. we'll get to that in a second. the bill undoes parts of sarban sarbanes-oxley passed to better protect investors, it also undoes part of the dodd/frank act. that law less than two years old. that came after our recent crisis on wall street. this bill allows small investors to fund companies like internet start-ups at a much earlier stage and says those companies need to provide far less factual information. they can even advertise they're looking for investors. it would also raise the cap on the number of private investors. technically there are two laws involved. the house bill is called the jobs act, but that means jump start our business start-ups, and then the senate's is called crowd fund or c

but scott mcgrew says they do it because they want the cash. >> good morning. apple said it tries to discourage employees from working so many hours trying to up their pay. so the owner of the factory is going to try a different strategy. raising pay without increasing hours. now this is by my count the third major raise for assembly line workers in the past year or so. it's been estimated it costs apple $8 in labor to make a single iphone. the third ipo this week from the bay area ended its first day of public trading 11% lower on thursday. annie's foods gained 5%. it added another 18%. some of the original investors in zynga are taking an early exit. hoffman has been working together for years. hoffman was creating linked in. the two of them bought a patent back then that described the acceptance of friends on social network i networking. when you think about that, that's one of the most powerful patents in silicon valley history. >> it was coming up on auction. we were worried this industry might get shut down if a patent was bought by a large company. it wa

scott mcgrew, peter teal not practicing what he preaches. >> he is not.eal made billions establishing paypal and then invested money in facebook and other start-ups. most didn't know who he was until he started offering college kids money to drop out of college and pursue internet start-ups. he once said that college was a waste of time. well, teal will teach one class at stanford. entrepreneurship. college bashing is in vogue for people who went to college. presidential candidate rick santorum recently bashed president obama's desire to send more to college calling it elitest. mr. santorum got his masters degree and then a law degree. not a lot of data for wall street we have data on oil imports into america. they have fallen. i talked with the head of western state petroleum. she says that probably has more to do with less american demand than more production but it's a move in the right direction. and swiss voters rejected a new law that would have given them six weeks vacation. they decided it would hurt the economy and they will stwik tich the minimu

scott mcgrew, quite a week. >> isn't it, though? vocera communications, annie's food, that was yesterday, today we get cafe press. they'll start trading on the nasdaq some time after the opening chime on the market in six minutes. cafe press, that site that lets you create t-shirts and coffee mugs with your own design on them. it's been around forever. and internet time since 1999 and is just now going public. wednesday's big ipo both had -- both had very good first days of trading. vocera, that makes the hospital communications a lot like the badges you see on star trek game, 31%, annie's in the east bay, absolutely exploded up 89%. and you'd think that companies would be thrilled when their stock rises 89% in the first few moments of trading. really that meant annie left a lot of money on the table. a company only gets cash from the first trade every other trade is between private individuals. if i buy share of a company on the first offering of $10, the company gets $10 and uses that money for expansion or research or whatever. a

for business reporter scott mcgrew, it's the final day of the financial quarter.ere's more. >> reporter: it sounds like another wall street insiders beats the little guy kind of thing. but zynga had the little guy in mind which weather it decided to allow the federal offering. it's affecting the way millionaire investors and employees sell their insider shares. if everyone cashed in at once, the share price would crater. so it's allowing the biggest insiders like zynga found eer mk pinkus to sell shares. another major investor on the board at zynga too sold some of his shares. now hoffman and pinkus go way back. before zing apinkus ran a social network called prize and hoffman worked across the hall creating linkedin. at the time the two bought a patent that subscribed the acceptance of friends on the social network. and when you think about it, that's one of the most powerful patents in silicon valley history. >> we bought it in 2003. praerl because we were coming up on aukction and were worried th industry might get shut down if they wanted dominant space that w

scott mcgrew, that probably means they'll sell out earlier. >> just like the niner tickets, i supposewill help the apple fans that can get their ipad and still get to work in the morning. we don't now how many ipads per store. the new ipad, of course, faster than the ipad ii with a better screen. don't forget you'll also be able to find the new ipad at verizon and at&t stores. you're not going to get the personal setup that apple offers at its flagship stores, but you can handle transferring your own e-mail. and it's our understanding that best buy and radioshack will also have the new version. david pogue of "the new york times" one of the few people in the world to get apple products early, there you see his kids have the apple ipad 2, yeah, there was a fight over that one. pogue published his review of the new ipad this morning, kids, come on, and said really the new ipad should have been called ipad 2-s because it's incremental step forward. he points out that the apps that look great on the new retina display take up far more memory than the old apps. and old apps which right now

here is scott mcgrew with more. >> good morning. a morgan stanlly analysts says they expect apple share to be worth near lids 96. there's the opening of markets in china and brazil. the expectation when the iphone 5 comes out, everybody will ditch their own iphone 4s. the fed released the results of the stress test. you may have heard a number of ban fx failed that test including citibank which has locations in the bay area. what does it mean for you? very little. feds say banks like citi, allied and suntrust, will be -- on a positive note, 15 of 19 banks did pass the stress test. the encyclopedia britannica has stopped printing books. this announcement ends more than 200 years of printing. that 32-volume set there of all the world's knowledge costs $1400. the online site costs money, too, though it's actually going to be free this week, guys, so peak can try it out and compare it to wikipedia. >> okay. scott, thank you very much. >>> turning now to the very rambunctious forecast that we have throughout the bay area. >> rambunctious

scott mcgrew. >> a lot of minutes. added together in a single day.f you did it the other way and said what would it take for one person to spend that much time on facebook, i have done the math for you. each day, the world spends the equivalent of one person using facebook for 19,000 years. facebook giving us the 10 billion minute statistic in an updated filing of the ipo paperwork. speaking of time spent, this is an important statistic. microsoft says people spend more time watching media on their x box than playing games. you can watch netflix, hulu on xbox. this has been central to microsoft strategy of taking over your living room. this is a big wind for microsoft. comcast announced you can watch video on its -- xbox through their ap as well. you can watch as much video as you want. a bit of a gasp through those who are worried about -- it is an example of a private company giving special preference to its own data. netflix counts against you. xfinity and it doesn't. the tv station is also owned by comcast. back to you. >> thank you very much. >>

scott mcgrew, not particularly impressed. >> it is a strange one, jon.mart's motivation here is it wants to keep selling dvds at a time when fewer people are using dvds. 40% of dvds sold are sold at walmart. so the idea called disk-to-digital works like this. you take the dvd you already own to walmart and for $5 a movie, the clerk there takes note of those movies and authorizes the streaming of those movies to various digital devices using silicon valley's voodoo, a company that walmart bought recently. now the company says you can watch it on your laptop or xbox. of course, most laptops and xboxes already play dvds in the first places. can you watch it on your ipad but only if it is connected to a network. >>> one of the big dangers of high-tech companies is losing your true believers, those from the early days back when your company was more about changing the world than making money. this morning a former google employee posted his resignation letter to the internet saying the google everybody talks about where employees are encouraged to take 20% of

scott mcgrew takes a look at what's driving the markets down. >> good morning. is it a lousy day, and there ray couple of factors in there. yesterday we got information from china na china would try to slow its growth rate and that rather spooked wall street yesterday. this morning we got information from europe talking about that whole region going into negative growth. if you have two scatter quarters of negative growth you're in a recession. in europe we've seen one quarter. this is not stock advice but an observation. you know the phrase, buy on the rumor, sell on the news, historically apple shares have risen in the days ahead of a big announcement, then fell after the announcement, regardless of apple announces. apple's going to announce something tomorrow, we expect the ipad 3 which they will call the ipad hd. p pandora reports profits. one analysts thinks all of the new devices iphones and ipads need more audience for pandora. pandora makes more money the more listeners it has. one data point i saw says pandora has the equivalent of 4% of the nation's

scott mcgrew takes a look at yelp and its first full day of trading. >>> good morning.elp is lower this morning but then again, so is everyone else. yelp ipo'd with a rip roaring start, opening price higher than expect $15 and then $60 plus percent gain after that. yelp started the first full day of trading and lost 8%. >>> the united states filed official papers in new zealand in an attempt to extradited kim.com on charges of racketeering. he's the head of megaupload accused of violating america copyright after uses traded hollywood movies on the site. aoltechguru removed a large image of rush limbaugh from its website. that site is the next target of activists looking to convince advertisers to stop sponsoring the rush limbaugh radio show. this, after mr. limbaugh said nasty things about a woman testifying before congress. he late ar poll guised but that didn't stop a number of sponsors leaving including tech companies like santa clara's sitrux. >> thank you. >> hot weather we had over the weekend. really nice temperatures. will the spoiling continue? >> yes it will.

scott mcgrew joins us. the third bay area company this week. >> that's right. cafe press trading on the public markets for the first time ever this morning. we have video as the company opened the nasdaq marketplace this morning. the ceo, the founders, their families, cafe press is that website that lets you put your own design on coffee cups and t-shirts. it's a bay area company that's been around since 1999. now, cafe press shares have jumped from their initial price up about 8.8%. second day of trading for both annies in the east bay, it's up 6.8% and then vocera in the south bay up about 5.5%. >>> great video for you from google. this is their self-driving car. we've seen this before. but now it can drive through the drive-through at taco bell. it can actually navigate. that driver is not touching the steering wheel. i'll guarantee you that for two reasons. one,'s eating a taco. here is the second reason. he is 95% blind. this fella got to drive the google car. there were other people in there. yes, there is an override system. but imagine the day in which

business and tech reporter scott mcgrew explains how. >> reporter: good morning. the expenditures accounts for half of the apple savings in the united states. they have another 100 billion overseas it doesn't want to repatriate for tax reasons. if there's any criticism of apple this morning, it is that the 45 billion was less than we expected apple to spend. the company has so much money, it can afford to pay a dividend, undertake a stock buy back, and still buy hewlett packard with cash if it wanted to, not that it is going to do that. all right. to the specifics. apple will 2.65 a share in dividends starting july 4th. starting 2015, the company will by $10 billion back of its own stock. numbers are well within apple earnings. even with all of this, its cash pile should continue to grow. why does apple have so much cash? obviously it sells lots of stuff, but the hoarding mentality was in her ited from steve jobs who saved them from brpts. remember this cover in 1997 with the apple logo and the word pray? that was not that long ago, much like the person that lived

scott mcgrew has been following the market since the announcement. first bob joins us live from the y yerba buena center. >> reporter: not too many surpris surprises. a lot of what we heard about this morning that was out there on the internet seems to have been verified this morning by apple here at the yerba buena center for the arts where the presentation we believe is just wrapping up right now. the biggest improvement in the third generation of the ipad is going to be in the display. people inside witnessing the presentation said it's absolutely beautiful compared to the current ipad 2. the third generation has a retina display. it's much higher resolution. 3.1 million pickx ls on the display. also an a5x. the next apple ipad will have four times the graphics power. a new five megapixel camera that can shoot high definition video. it will run on the 4g lte network. much faster than the current 3-g. they note if there's no 4g available the new ipad will run on the 3g. they demoed a new feature. voice dictation with your e-mail where you can speak

speaking of science, scott mcgrew says one of the most valuable scientists is leaving public service work for google. >> regina dugan, ahead of advanced research agency. darpa researches state of the art weapons and other ideas like the self-driving cars that race. google also maekz self-driving cars. wired reporting that dugan will take a senior position at google. >>> we told you this would happen a few weeks ago, yahoo! made it official. it is suing facebook, of stealing several ideas, mostly related to internet advertising. now critics of the move point out it's not clear what yahoo! ever did with its ideas and speculate yahoo! is trying to make money off the facebook ipo. yahoo! indicates it had a network called 360 long before facebook and some of the ideas belonged to yahoo!. if you don't do something with your idea or it doesn't succeed and someone else does, is that really their fault? >> the war of the major websites. good question. >> the time is 5:56. we'll get you information on a car port fire in oakland. christie smith live on the scene has new details. >>> animal righ

scott mcgrew is in the newsroom and says you can limit what information company collects. >> right.op of the show the european union announced that google's privacy policy definitely breaks eu laws. google has gone ahead with this privacy policy change as of midnight so it's been effective for about six hours in california time. but the eu this morning saying it breaks eu law of what google is going to do about that we're not sure. to your original question, do you want to actually block google from knowing about you? there are some advantages to google tracking you. if you search on google, say about the band grateful dead t next time you're on youtube you're going to be seeing gradeful dead videos. there are those who find it creepy. the best way to defeat this is don't log in with your user name when you use services like google search or youtube. you see gmail here. you have to log in when you use gmail. even without your name google will track you but it's going to use a number. keep in mind if you have an apple itunes account they have your credit card number and know where yo
