i'm scott mcgrew. i got a job offer the other day and i took it. a job no one, including my boss, knew i had for which i was paid $10. the job involved walking into a beauty supply store in silicon valley and documenting tweezers. yeah, tweezers. so the manufacturers could see if they were stocked properly. tight about five minutes. i picked up the extra work through an app called gigwalk. turns out gig walkers are all around us, regular folks with regular jobs and a smartphone doing small tasks for a little extra pocket money. a mobile workforce of more than 300,000 users and growing all controlled by a small startup in san francisco. matt is one of three gigwalk founders, all former yahoo! engineers, cnn calls the company brilliant, one of the most innovative companies in mobile. joined by chris from eweek and the reporter from silicon beat as well. well, this seems fairly straightforward. this is one of those apps i got immediately. it sees what's around me. it says somebody somewhere needs you to do x, y, z and we'll pay you five bucks. it's th

. >>> scott mcgrew is talking about concern over phone surveillance that may have gone too far in the ' s after that attack. >>> good morning. it is a sensitive subject. even are the courts say it went too far. the foreign intelligence surveillance court is supposed to key an eye on the nsa. according to new documents released by the white house under court order, the nsa went far beyond the limits that the court set, looking into telephone numbers that were not considered suspicious by the courts. most of the numbers the nsa would track did not qualify as suspicious as defined about i the courts. of the 17,000 phone numbers, the nsa said it was examining, they had clearance to examine only 1800 of them. when releasing these documents, the head of intelligence, james clapper wrote, in june of this year, president obama directed me to declassify, make public as much information as possible. that is true up to a point. the documents were actually released because of a court order to release them. the president was following the court's demands. it was not his idea. other news this morni

scott mcgrew, good news for commercial real estate. and good mcgrew news. >> i think so too. after years of office buildings vacant in the south bay, we're seeing not just new construction as i drive around the south bay i see buildings being renovated. nearly torn down and made more modern. you have google and apple, building new mega campuses as well. good news for the south bay. for a few years it's been san francisco that's been jumping ahead attracting new tech companies. it's pretty much taken on that hip engineers want to live in the city. but city government in san francisco also has been working very hard to make the city attractive. and the south bay, frankly, has been caught flat footed. other news expect less hype perhaps from the apple event for 10:00 a.m. as jon was pointing out they are expected to be sort of new phones, perhaps we'll get a for sure release date on the new operating system as well. apple shares above 500. rumors, sell on the news, so if the stock goes down the announcement not necessarily evidence that investors were disappointed. just what the

scott mcgrew at issue whether we pay our bills. >> the debt ceiling.t needs to be raised to pay the bills we've already run up. there are some in congress, particularly in the very conservative wing of the republican party who will not negotiate over the debt ceiling unless obama care is delayed or cancelled. the speaker of the house who has been protective of america's credit wortiness, worried about that he backed down, will allow those in his party's right wing to tie the future of the budget to obama care. the measure to cancel the affordable care act has been voted on countless times in the house but hasn't and probably cannot pass the senate. meanwhile, also in washington, a real surprise out of the fed wednesday as it announced it would continue its bond buying spree and that a taper or easing of easy money policies was not going to happen soon. which is pretty much the opposite of what the fed had been saying previously. that meant the charts on the stock market looked like a patient whit electric paddles. seema mody has more. good morning. >>

scott mcgrew, that would be an historic appointment if the president chooses janet yellen. >> it's ifat's looking more likely. the president clearly wanted to appoint former treasury secretary, former harvard president larry summers to the post but summers withdrew his name from nomination over the weekend. summers was incredibly well quauled but many were of prepared to stand him away of his confirm agency. janet yellen the strong choice for many in the liberal wing of the democratic party. her appointment would make history which is perhaps one of the reasons that president obama has been resisting. the position is not supposed to be political or historic. she is qualified, the vice chairman of the fed already, she is former san francisco fed governor, former professor at the hoft school of business, the dean there weighing in. >> she sympathizes, a terrific thinker, very clear minded. all the judgment i've seen over the many years has been terrific. >> wall street very enthusiastic about the idea of janet yellen as the next fed charm. she is considered a dove, that is she will cont

scott mcgrew, that company hasn't convinced investors. >> we'll know a lot more come friday as the new iphones go on sale. absolutely right. not much for investors to like so far. apple has not released any information on how many preorders it's getting for its apple iphone 5-c. it's available to buy for pickup or delivery on friday. to be fair, this is not a traditional apple release in that the 5-c is not the latest greater phone. it's a cheaper version of the same old phone so orders may be small. apple shares start at $450.12, on a day the market was higher. apple down enough to pull the whole nasdaq index into negative territory. general motors says it's working on a competitor for the tesla model s, detroit's version will cost around $30,000 for a car that goes a planned 200 miles on a single charge. that's the same as tesla. most electric cars now travel less than 100 miles. tesla has opened a store in the south bay. this time next to the fremont factory itself. the store opened earlier this month as a soft launch. tesla only calling attention to it in a news release monday. if

scott mcgrew, building new towers technology to go beyond the crawl we usually see.have seen the louie c.k. tonight show. that takes us to task for griping about how slow wi-fi should be on boar. that said, it is pretty slow. the wall street journal says go go internet will build new towers and technology to feed virgin america and jetblue with much faster internet. anna eshu has written a in you law letting you unbundle your cable, picking channels you want and channels you don't. similar to a bill passed by john mccain. she got a law passed forcing tv commercials to turn down the volume. a la carte cable, interesting idea. keep in mind this tv station is owned by comcast. it sounds good to consumers but it is problematic for channels with big budgets like espn. they get paid whether you watch it or not. money they can use to broadcast baseball teams and money they use to pick big salaries. you picking your cable channels can affect tim lincecum's pay. how about that? >> not if they sign that grandma. >> probably wouldn't be quite as expensive. 5:57 right now. >>> a

. >> i'm scott mcgrew. jon and laura are off. we have an update in palo alto, east palo alto that is, police searching for at least two suspects who shot at a car full of people overnight. police say they found three victims on university avenue between bell street and runameade, two of them had been hit by gunfire. bob redell joins us at police headquarters. investigators, they have any idea on motive? >> reporter: they could be looking at road rage, gang related or something else. right now they are not sure why this happened. it started around 1:30 this morning, police received a 911 call from three people in a red subcompact, driving down university avenue to say they were being followed closely by two to three people in a white camry with tinted windows. as police were heading out to respond they heard at least six gun shots, then the shot spotter that can indicate where shots are coming from indicated the shots were happening on university at michigan about a quarter mile away from the police station. police ended up findin

scott mcgrew takes a look at the high-tech victims of the iphone. >> good morning to you. it is the changing face of technology. blackberry is going to become a private company. another company is going to buy it up and buy all of the shares. it will no longer be sold on the stock market. if you are a blackberry investor, you'll be paid for your shares. if you are a blackberry user, your phone will still work, but the end of blackberry is coming. frankly, we've known that ever since the company laid off merely half of its employees. pandora shares, meanwhile, fell hard monday after apple said its new itunes radio was doing very well. two services are very similar. it's recovered a bit this morning. then you've got these guys on the nasdaq. the guys from redwood city's rocket fuel up 2% again today after a big rise since their ipo thursday night. they got to open the nasdaq this morning. now, this is just a ceremony. it doesn't mean anything from a financial standpoint, but it's fun. shares of that company ipo'ed at $29, and now they're trading above $60. back to you. >> wo

scott mcgrew says that company will raise billions, but for what? >> it's a very good question. that is, after all, the whole point, is it not? to float your company, you raise funds from the public, and the desire for current shareholders to be rich, okay, that's a factor. it's always a factor. in general, companies are supposed to use money in an i.p.o. to expand. it's not going to buy a new factory with the money it raises if it i.p.o.'s. we don't know, and we can't know what it's going do with the money because twitter filed its s-1, its initial paperwork, for the past i.p.o. confidently, using the new jump-start our business act or jobs act. what it will do with the money is in that document we just can't see the document yet. we will. now the great parlor game, as we wait for that, is what will twitter's stock symbol be. twit, probably. what exchange will it choose? nasdaq, nyse? nasdaq has had a rough time of it lately. you can use a friend like twitter. back to you. >> you got that right. the news is getting ready to go public. it has a lot of nearby businesses very exci

scott mcgrew's huge numbers out of cupertino. >> marla, apple says it sold a total of 9 million iphonesver the weekend. you compare that to the 5 million it had the last time it sold a new iphone. and remember the iphone 5, that was this time last year. 9 million, a blowout big number, pleasing many investors. actually, that number probably could have been higher. apple sold out of the iphone 5s. the gold one sold out almost immediately. meanwhile, two groups have hacked the iphone 5s fingerprint scanner. they did it over the weekend. the first to do so was a german hacking group, but this guy was just an hour behind them. here's san francisco-based  security expert mark rogers, shows you how he made a fake fingerprint using various materials, including caulk and wood glue. he was able to convince the iphone that it was real. now, what does this mean for you and your own security? i think you can probably safely ignore it. remember, everything is ultimately unsecured given the right tools and enough time. a bank vault is going to open if you have enough dynamite. it's quite unlikely b
