. >>> scott mcgrew. >> data into the newsroom just this morning show producer prices falling. inflation is a nonissue, guys, in our economy. that may encourage the fed to hold off once again on increasing interest rates. bumping up rates is a way of protecting against inflation, and there just isn't any. we do get the minutes from the fed later today. and like tea leaves, we're going to try to figure out what the committee thinks about interest rates. for years, i tried to convince you the fed and mortgage rates were unrelated, but that was back before the housing crash. now they're totally related. mortgage rates have gone up quickly lately, and in fact, last week, we saw one of the slowest weeks for new mortgage applications because of those higher rates. "the new york times" says this morning kentucky's senator rand paul may declare his candidacy for president as soon as april. paul is an outspoken critic of the fed and the federal open market s committee, and he said if he were president, he would audit the fed, to which the fed points out they're an open book. they litera

. >> scott mcgrew, google thinks the feds are pushing for too much power, of all things. >> in search this case search warrants. google has objected to a filing by the justice department which wants to expand the power of search warrants, allowing a judge to authorize a search anywhere on any computer, right now if the feds want to see some data, they need a warrant issued by a judge who can only issue a warrant for a computer in his or her district. that's based on legal tradition, right, a judge in new jersey can't sign a search warrant to search your house in california. so why should he be able to write one for your computer? well the fbi says in this day and age, it needs the power to get a search warrant to search any computer anywhere. google's fighting that idea in both the court of law and the court of public opinion. its to be lawyer writing in an open letter that kind of power would allow the fbi unlimited power all over the world. keep in mind, this tension is very real. remember when president obama was at stanford on friday, he invited the head of google who did not atte

. >> scott mcgrew, what was new is now a used car. >> yes, and the worry, guys, is it's a used car very few people want because of the new deals on a new lease of say a leaf or other electric cars, they're just so good the "wall street journal" has a fascinating article this morning on this problem of all of these electric car leases expiring. people are turning in their old electric cars and instead of buying them, which is an option at the end of the lease, they're just leasing new cars again for 200 bucks a month. they get better technology, don't have to worry about the batteries growing old. it's flooding the market with used electric cars. one dealer says he's dealing with lease returns of 150 leafs every month. now the problem in mountain view is a flood of smart people with well-paying jobs, both google and linkedin are bursting at the seams. bob redell is out at google headquarters. when they moved in there, they had 800 employees. that's not the case anymore. >> reporter: yes, now they have 801, it's grown tremendously, i kid you, but they actually have about 20,000 employees

. >> scott mcgrew the law says within 30 days. >> that's a quick turnaround. president obama proposed that law be expanded nationwide. we understand anthem actually went public with the hack essentially just hours after discovering it. so it is still terrible news. the hack is roughly twice the size of target's, but the company has been proactive. speaking of numbers, the new report from joint venture silicon valley has interesting numbers in it. i really like this report. it comes out every year, practically every data point is fascinating. how about this one? last year, more than 17,000 foreigners emigrated into the san francisco bay area. at the same time, a net 7,404 people left the bay area. californians immigrants we don't really know. we know it's a net outflux of 7,000. that same report shows what we knew, that it's really expensive to live here. the median house price is north of $700,000. believe it or not, that's actually far less than during the housing bubble. average income in the south bay $116,000, slightly less than san francisco, 104, which s

. >>> scott mcgrew, what does this mean for regular internet users? >> net neutrality means no one company can send you data in the last mile to your house faster than any other company. generally good news for consumers in that it means a fun new startup has just as much of an opportunity to succeed as a big company, and competition has brought up a lot of good things. how that net neutrality is enforced is the argument. the obama administration wants the fcc to regulate the internet like a utility. republicans in congress want legislation instead. it's mostly the who, not the what. speaking of fights, depending o who you believe there may be a big battle between google and uber. google is uber's biggest earliest investor. reports say google is working on its own ride sharing service and uber is working on its own robot cars which is google's specialty. uber will work with carnegie-mellon the research and develop robot cars. carnegie-mellon helped invent the robot car ten years ago, back when we used to think, wow! robot cars? that's amazing. google

i'm scott mcgrew. >> i'm kris sanchez. all morning long, we have been hoping for positive news but the baby and his mother who disappeared wo weeks ago near sacramento have been found. last night, the mother turned up, and then just moments ago, deputies found the body of a newborn baby boy in the same area. >> bob redell has been following the latest developments for us. such a sad story. >> it is. this discovery made in just the past hour. the yellow county sheriff's office confirming they have found the body of a baby. there's no official confirmation whether or not it's that of justice rees the newborn boy who disappeared with his mom. but we know his family believes this is the case. they are on the scene, being comforted by a police chaplain. a a yolo sheriff marine patrol found the baby next to the town of knight's landing, which is north of woodland where the boy lived with his mother. this has been provided by our own jodi hernandez. this is located where searchers had been looking all night. the yolo county sheri

. >> i'm scott mcgrew. an hour ago of the federal communications commission in washington voted 3-2 to give themselves the power to enforce net neutrality in the united states. >> they did that by reclassifying internet providers as public utilityies. nannette miranda joins us with how silicon valley is reacting to the decision. >> good monrning. invogt was close. the fcc decided 3-2 in favor of net neutrality which essentially means treating the internet like a utility. today's vote caps off more than a year of heated debate on the issue. the fcc received more than 4 million public comments. on the one side content providers like netflix and google which favored net neutrality. the opponent like time warner and comcast, wanted to be able to charge more for so-called fast lanes, faster connections to the internet. in the end, the fcc said no to fast lanes saying it is a utility. there aren't faster ways to get water and electricity. they all reach the consumer in the same way at the same speed. equal access

i'm scott mcgrew. >> and i'm kris sanchez. it's a story catching national attention now. a one-time star athlete facing those rape charges this morning. brock turner at the center of it all, pleading not guilty. >> nanette miranda was in court for his arraignment. she join us with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, scott and kris. as you mentioned the highly recruited swim star pleaded not guilty to all of those sexual assault charges related to the assault of an unconscious and intoxicated woman he met at an on-campus party last month. this 19-year-old brock turner in a suit with his father next to him. and his attorney mike armstrong as they headed to the arraignment. the hearing began promptly at 9:00 a.m. and only lasted a few minutes. after withdrawing from stanford university last week, turner apparently moved back home to dayton, ohio. his attorney asked that the former freshman not have to go to all of his court appearances in california because of the expense, but the judge denied that. he must attend every single time. prosecutors requested a protective orde

i'm sam brock, in for scott mcgrew. >> i'm kris sanchez. a year ago, the governor asked us to cut back our water use by about 20%. apparently, most of us got the message. >> nannette miranda is live. how did we score? looks like good progress but more needs to be done. >> a good summary. more needs to be definitely done. governor brown asked all californians to cut back water usage by 20% because of the drought, and we find out that it's easier said than done. californians month after month failed to meet that goal and finally, for the month of december californians met that goal cutting water usage back by 22% state-wide when compared to the same month in 2013. if you look at the individual usage, that progress looks good as well. according to that new report released today by the california water resources board, the average californiaen used 67 gallons of water a day. that's down from 88 gallons a day the prior month in november but before we can celebrate, remember, december was a really rainy month for california so the state is actual

. >> i'm scott mcgrew. it happened at the dzo sports bar on allem rock avenue. >> san jose police confirm to us they have arrested one man for shooting two other men last night at the dzo sports bar and restaurant. he faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon. looking inside the windows in the back the place is pretty much as it was at 10:00 last night, the time of the shooting. bar tables littered with beer bottles. a large pool of blood on the floor in the back where at least one of the men was shot. their injuries are severe but both men, according to police are expected to survive. if you're not familiar it's in east san jose on alum rock. the lieutenant with the police department told us this started as an argument over what he wouldn't say. grew into what he described as a pretty good melee involving several people. the suspect pulled out the gun, shot the other two men. as you can see in the video, officers did temporarily detain several people outside of the restaurant after the shooting in an a

. >> i'm scott mcgrew. we'll have a live look across the bay area. people bracing for the rain meteorologist christina loren tracking the storm to your doorstep. good morning. >> those live pictures really telling the story at this hour. san rafael dark clouds overhead. the system is going to work from north to south very slowly. a slow mover and it has this atmospheric river tap. for us that means we're going to see a steady plume of moisture continue to funnel into the bay area starting in tonight in particular all the way through tomorrow and for much of the weekend as well. let me give you an idea. we stop the clock for you. this is a broad overview. 7:00 p.m. tonight starting to get a lot of the red in the north bay and even in san francisco. systems actually picked up a little bit of steam. by 3:00 p.m. tomorrow we're talking about heavy downpours working south, right here into the san jose area. i continue to advance this for you. we take you into saturday light shower activity and heavy stuff returns as we head through sunday at 7:00 a.m. com

. >> got to love scott mcgrew. you know what?nd of deflating when you think about our snow pack in comparison because we need it so desperately. 60% of the water that we get filled reservoirs comes from the snow pack. i'm talking about san francisco, specifically. and right now, you can see we have a snow cap sierra nevada but we need this snow pack because it's our frozen reservoir that slowly released as we head throughout the warm months. here's a pretty good sign. california snow pack at 27% of average. that's up 6% from last week just because of the recent rainfall. now, we have a much better story to tell when it comes to the reservoirs filled with rain water. marin, look at this. 98.2% of capacity and all marin reservoirs right now, and 117.8% of average. if we were to get another big storm, they would actually have to continue to release whatever water was collected. and we do have rain on the way, but not for the next week or so. i'm tracking our next chance for rain as we get into next friday it looks like. today, a mil

. >> i'm scott mcgrew. crews spent nearly 12 hours searching for the missing man and it ended with the grim discovery. the man, his father his fiance fishing in the oyster bay marina when their canoe sank. >> nanette moran dez is there. what can you tell us about what went wrong? >> the coast guard does confirm they found a baby this morning near coyota point, south of here near the san mateo bridge. it's that of a 22-year-old man, and he does fit the description of a man missing from that fishing boat. as you can imagine, family members did not want to hear this. this news as they were waiting onshore for word to see what happened. this all began yesterday just before sunset when three people launched their 12-foot cano from here at oyster point to go fishing. a 22-year-old man, a 22-year-old woman, and a 54-year-old man. then san francisco fire got a report those three people went missing from the u.s. coast guard joining in the search. they pinpointed the search area between oyster point and coyote point

. >> i'm scott mcgrew. we have live team coverage of the storm. >> stephanie chuang is in the north bay getting hit by rain. bob redell is in san francisco where we have seen a steady downpour but we will begin our coverage with christina loren. >> good morning, cris scott, everyone at home. impacting marin county sonoma county pushing towards 101. for us on the peninsula and in san jose we're just starting to see the first green of the morning. we'll see more of that as we head throughout the next couple hours and we can really count on any sort of flood reports coming in between noun and 4:00 when the storm will be at its worst. you can see right now, most of the activity is still to the west of 101. and as we head throughout probably the next two to three hours, that's when we're going to start to see the heaviest stuff roll through the north bay. then between 1:00 and 4:00 like i was talking about, that's when we're going to see everything press to the south. here's the deal. we have a saturated ground
