scott mcgrew said that has sparked a knew call for nuclear. both in europe and here in the united states. >> nuclear could help free europe from its dependence on russia and our dependence on the middle east. as we find our climate in crisis, it could help the environment. now, nuclear power doesn't release any carbon into the atmosphere but europe has been moving away from nuclear. the former german chancellor leading the charge. merkel had a ph.d. in physics. in the day following the fukushima disaster in japan, she ordered the disabling of eight russian reactors. there was a huge argument over whether nuclear is truly safe. there is no argument over germany, which is now one of the largest burners of coal in the world. there are still more than 100 talking in reactors in europe, making about 25% of the power. here in california, we have four. three power plants. this reactor is no longer used for power. it has a very small reactor used for medical and imaging. just one is fully up and running. that's diablo canyon north of pismo beach. one

. >> scott mcgrew has been poring over those numbers. up to 8.5%? >> that's right. what we call the top line number. prices are 8.5% higher than this time last year. if you compare prices just over the last month, they're up 1.2%, which is huge. inflation really one of the biggest financial problems that american families face. not only does it make everything more expensive, obviously, it weakens our savings and retirement accounts, the money we set aside is worth less now than when you put it in the bank. i'm still breaking down the specifics for march but it's useful to go back to february to illustrate a point. economists add all of these things up and more, a basket of goods when calculating inflation. but you're not always buying all these things. natural gas, yeah, sure, but how often do you rent or buy a car? probably not that often. now, up there in the middle you'll see gasoline up 38% in one year. that we buy a lot of. gas prices are so volatile, we e mentioned, 8.5%, and then core inflation which strips out gas and food because those numbers move so much

on twitter you'll find me @scott mcgrew. >> thanks a lot, scott. now we are all spending hundreds of dollars more every month due to inflation. consumer prices jumped 8.5% in march from a year ago. now, that includes food, which is also up 8.8% from a year ago. and gasoline, i think we're feeling it at the pumps, which rose 48% from last march. with i spoke to the bank of the west's chief economist, scott anderson, about the rising costs and growing recession concerns. >> it's quite concerning. we're seeing the worst inflation in 41 years right now. it's already impacting consumer confidence and consumer spending power, and it's also causing the federal reserve to signal faster and more aggressive interest rate hikes, which means higher interest rates for all consumers on credit cards, on mortgages, and this is going to weigh further on the housing market. it is already starting to affect consumer discretionary spending, as well as durable goods spending, things like cars, we're starting to see sales starting to soften already. consumers right now

scott mcgrew joins us. russia denies that it attacked that train station but the pictures speak for themselves. >> until recently, russia denied it invaded ukraine so take russia for the granl of salt its worth. it happened off to the east in the donetsk region. this is the area russia claims the pro russia. you can see toys and strollers and suitcases after the injured and dead were taken away. it is a terrible season. keep in mind when we show you this on television, these are edited so you don't see the worst. it is. so more horrific than this. the ukrainian president zelensky continues to rally other countries to his cause. he just spoke with the finnish parliament warning them russia could invade them and that russia could leave the kind of destruction ukraine is experiencing right now. finland, not a member of nato, though it works closely with nato. a growing number of finns want to join. finland would be welcome if that's what it chooses to do. meantime, military leaders told congress they're doing

. >> scott mcgrew, this happened in the far western part of the country. >> very close to nato's border. good morning. it's about 40 miles from lviv where the missile strike was to the polish border. now, had one of these gone off badly off course into this area, we could be looking at an entirely different sort of war. the other unusual and notable thing about this particular strike on the area is it hit military targets. now that's unusual because we have not seen that very often from the russians. nbc says it hit military infrastructure and a tire repair store. the tire repair store seems to be collateral damage. one could argue the russians have no business striking any target other than the military targets. and that is certainly the way the u.s. army would handle it. we've seen so many examples in the past of the russians hitting civilian targets. leveling apartment blocks, schools and hospitals out of bounds for any modern army. one of our nbc crews in lviv was there as the missiles flew overhead. >> that was a cruise missile. wait for one more. they fire them in 30-second interv

scott mcgrew, more people back to work. >> 431,000 added in the month of march. unemployment rate falls to 3.6%. people are returning to work. we've known for some time there were lots of jobs out there, more jobs than there were workers. it looks like easing covid rates convinced more people to return to the office or the workplace. pay is up, too, up 5.6% since last year, which you would expect as people demand better pay since inflation. >> as more and more people get jobs, it will help ease the supply issues, it is good news to fight inflation, and it is good news for our economy from being on the mend to on the move. >> some other interesting tidbits about the jobs report. 1 in 10 americans still report working from home. i suspect this number is much higher in the bay area. women are coming back to the work force at a much faster rate. unemployment rate among women now 3.3%. and the biggest growth, i think you can guess, is in leisure and hospitality. also, marcus, interesting news coming out of the white house this morning. it's been reported that jen psak

scott mcgrew, i know the big question is how serious is musk here? >> this is something normally we wouldn't ask, right, marcus? musk filed very official documents with the securities and exchange commission saying he would normally pay each shareholder $54.20 for his or her shares, well above the closing price. but it's hard to say how serious because musk has a history of not being serious, even about fiduciary matters. he's gotten into trouble with the s.e.c. for posting financial things he shouldn't have that turned out not to be true. then there's the price. there's a number 420 in it and he likes adding that number when he can. the current share price of twitter actually fell before gaining a couple of bucks but it's still $10 under what musk is offering. you would expect if people really thought musk were going to pay $54 for the shares, they'd buy them now at a discount. but they're not doing it. musk for his part warns there won't be a better offer. my offer is my best and final offer and if it is not accepted, i would need to reconsider my

scott mcgrew says that's the worst in 40 years. >> the worst since 1981. 8.5% from this time last year. when you strip out gas and food though, which as you mentioned is where we see the really big price hikes, prices are up 6.5%. what economists call the core inflation. that number, 6.5%, may contain a bit of good news. it is not as big as it has been in the past which may show some cooling with inflation. keep in mind, the basket of goods that economists use sometimes include things that you wouldn't buy. sure, we all use natural gas and certainly gasoline. but some numbers like more than 35% increase in the price of a used car doesn't affect every american family. just the ones buying the car. though inflation is one of the biggest financial problems american families face. not only does it make everything more expensive, obviously. it weakens our savings and our retirement accounts. the money we set aside is worth less now than when you put it in the bike. the best way to fight inflation is to raise interest rates. that slows the economy down. barring an emergency rate hike which i

scott mcgrew, billions of dollars. >> billions. rich people use debt as a way to manage taxes. but musk is doing more than that. he's borrowing against his interest in tesla to buy twitter. he's also selling some of his stock. musk sold about $8 billion more in tesla stock this week alone, according to government filings. he's promised he won't sell any more. we presume that money is going toward his twitter purchase because he's arranged to buy out using $21 billion of his own cash and borrowing another $12.5 billion. two senators, markey from massachusetts and blumenthal said elon musk should testify in front of congress about why he wants to buy twitter and what he plans to do with it when he's in control. musk will probably end up in front of congress a lot. here he is in 2014, talking at the time about how important it is we give up our dependence on russian rockets. and he was right about that many many years ago. twitter shareholders have yet to vote on musk's takeover. that is the next step. we think that will happen in may, but of course, may is just around the corner.

we want to get to scott mcgrew who can break it down. >> according to financial filings, we are justnow, elon musk exploring whether to commence a tender offer for twitter. so this is according to a new securities filing. this updated filing was published moments ago. says he has the money to do it. musk says to the s.e.c. he's got $46.5 billion to finance a potential deal. you may recall originally he had offered $54.20 a share. that's about 43 billion. he has got the money he's telling the s.e.c. i will remind you, kris, not everything musk says necessarily ends up happening in the future. >> yeah. we have seen that. thank you very much. >>> we have big names, two of them, in democratic politics, they are coming to the bay area. you're looking at one of them. president barack obama and we are looking live at stanford university where he will speak this afternoon. he's expected to talk about the way we create and consume information and how it could threaten democracy. vice president kamala harris will be in san francisco. among her spots ucsf where she will address maternal health.

our scott mcgrew says that sparked a new call for nuclear, both in europe and here in the united states its dependence on russia, and our dependence on the middle east, and as we find our climate in crisis, it could help the environment. now, nuclear power doesn't release any carbon to heat the atmosphere, but europe has been moving away from nuclear. the former german chancellor, merkel, leading that charge. germany was a leader in nuclear. merkel had a ph.d. in physics. in the days following the disaster in japan, merkel ordered the shutdown of eight older reactors, then another nine that were really quite modern. there is, of course, a huge argument over whether nuclear is truly safe, but there's no argument over germany, which is now one of the largest burners of coal in the world. there are still more than 100 nuclear reactors in europe, making about 25% of their power. here in california, we have four. three power plants, this reactor is no longer used for power. it has a very small reactor used for medical and imaging. just one, the one in red, is fully up and running, the diablo
