scott mcgrew is joining us. i know the fdic says everyone's money is safe, even during the change of ownership. >> you can even make the argument that it's super safe. the depositors at silicon valley bank have the safest deposits in the world because the government said it would go beyond the traditional $250,000 maximum. this is going to count as a transfer to the new bank. there's no way the government is going to let this get screwed up. >> a lot of people have more than $250,000. >> that's right, and there's a $250,000 maximum, the most the government will cover if banks go bad. a lot of businesses, depositors, were moving their money out of banks like first republic, signature, obviously silicon valley bank, into big banks like chase. chase is a very big, safe bank. but the american economy depends on smaller regional banks, so we've got to find a way to stabilize those banks if they are going to survive. otherwise, it just makes sense to move to a bigger bank. >> even if you didn't have your money in this

we want to get the latest on the possible indictment of former president donald trump. >> scott mcgrewning us now. the former president said he would be arrested today. >> right. and really he's the only person. it's a good reminder. it's only the former president who says today is the day. prosecutors in manhattan have been mum about what's going to happen next. we don't know if the manhattan grand jury will indict trump at all. we do know law enforcement has been prepping, both in new york city, and washington, but again, individual officers don't know anything more than we do. only that an indictment may be coming and trump has been called for protests. the case in new york involves trump's payments to his lawyer, paying him back for paying off adult film actress stormy daniels. there are allegations trump misreported hush payments as legal expenses and falsifying financial documents is against the law in new york city. now, do americans think this is serious? it depends on how you ask and, of course, who you ask. an economist you gov poll asked is it a crime for a candidate to pay

scott mcgrew has more for us. scott? >> reporter: good morning. according to bloomberg markets, meta ceo mark zuckerberg wants to leave for paternity leave with those job cuts in place. zuckerberg and his wife are expecting their third child anytime now. as for meta facebook, this would be the company's second major layoff. there was an earlier round in november. meta's stock price has soared not on any new invention or any new announcement but simply on those job cuts and cost-cutting. and in san francisco atlassian cuts 500 according to company memos. the bay area and tech in particular have been hit hard by layoffs, but the rest of the united states seems to be doing quite well. the most recent jobs report showed unemployment at 3.4%. that is a 53-year low. there's job growth, as well, particularly in the service industries. the fed, of course, has been trying to slow job growth to help ease inflation. head of the fed jay powell before a senate committee today. he'll talk to the house tomorrow. powell's biggest problem, trying to slow down an e

i'm scott mcgrew. the tech world seems to have dodged a bullet after the bailout, not a bailout of silicon valley bank. the bank is open. the ceo says it's safe, arguably safer than any other bank really. and importantly, companies are making payroll. i have two guests this morning. chris dean is the ceo of treasury prime. and a former top executive at silicon valley bank. and we have the ceo of indoor labs and a customer of silicon valley bank. good morning. your company works with open-source software and the software supply chain, and the paycheck that you pay your employees come out of silicon valley bank, right? >> yes, scott. thanks for having me. we have 42 employees that are distributed globally. we do make payroll directly but silicon valley bank. until last week, 100% of our deposits were at silicon valley bank. >> take me back to that day in which you thought to yourself, oh, no. what went through your head, what convinced you to take your money out of silicon valley bank? >> i was interview

scott mcgrew has the latest for us. scott, 30 charges. what does that mean? >> we don't know specifically. we've got the number from sources but we can reasonably speculate they're connected to the cover-up of a payment to stormy daniels. so what specifically, well, it's not illegal to have an affair, although trump says he didn't, it's not illegal to give someone money, and trump said he did, but it is against the law to do it as part of an illegal campaign expenditure, but that's a federal crime. trump's lawyer went to prison partly for that, but this isn't a federal case. what does that leave us with? the charges must be related to the way that trump accounted for the payment. it's a misdemeanor in new york to falsify business records. trump's lawyer was on the "today" show earlier. he said that the former president was surprised by the indictment but that he was ready to fight. it's possible the indictment will be unsealed before trump is ordered to appear. president biden was asked about trump on his way to visit victims of the storms in mississippi. bid

he is the first former president to ever face criminal charges. >> scott mcgrew joins us. you've long said this may be the first indictment, but it may not be the last for the former president. >> it's entirely possible. there are four separate criminal investigations. good morning. the indictment in new york is just one, and in many ways it's really the weakest case. the case in georgia, the federal investigation into the obstruction at mar-a-lago, those are far more serious. as for new york, we don't know yet what specific charges trump will face. trump's lawyers say they expect to find out tuesday when many believe the former president will turn himself in in manhattan. politico reports manhattan d.a. wanted trump to show up today but the secret service said that would be too difficult. meantime, trump's lawyer just sat down for an interview with the "today" show. >> what was the president's reaction when told by his lawyers of this indictment? >> you know, despite all the sut scuttlebutt, we thought rule of law would prevail, so he was shocked. after that, he put a not

scott mcgrew joins us.e're all too familiar with the cell phone videos captured showing violent passengers and flight attendants just trying to do their jobs. >> yeah. the problem, though, laura, getting kicked off say a united flight, you're probably never going to be allowed to fly united again. but american and delta wouldn't know anything about your behavior. a new bipartisan bill called the abusive passengers act would give the tsa the power to create a new no-fly list of people who perpetrate violence against flight crews. those passengers would not be allowed on any commercial flight from any american airport. it's sponsored by republican rhode island senator jack reed and california congressman eric swalwell who stood in front of the group this morning. pete henriquez told the story of a passenger who would not sit down no matter how many times he was asked. then he held up a picture of himself taken in the hospital. >> we want the rest of the flight to be calm and unevent. so everyone was safe. upo

scott mcgrew, big banks stepped in first. first republic stayed afloat. >> exactly. there were four of them. now we're up to 11 banks helping out san francisco-based first republic led by chase bank. these banks are realizing if they help out, they look that much more strong, and appearance is everything when it's everybody so anxious about the banks. so, lots of banks joining in and helping. meantime, the parent company of silicon valley bank has filed for bankruptcy. this is not something to worry about. silicon valley bank is now a separate company. svb, as you know, collapsed after a run on the bank, even though the fundamentals were healthy. i spoke to one depositor who had to decide whether to take his money out. >> it's fiscally responsible to protect your employees, your investors' money, all of that as an individual. but then again, as a group, it would have been better if everyone just left their money in. the bank was healthy. the bank was fine so long as everyone agreed the bank was healthy and the bank was fine. >> that's exactly right, scott. i fundamen

. >> scott mcgrew, the bank of the day is credit suisse. >> credit suisse, the bank of the day. not a california bank for once, thank goodness. the multinational bank warned its investor it has some weakness in its financials, and for the past few days, the bank's largest investor, saudi arabia, had been putting more money in, shoring up that weakness. now those same investors say they're not going to offer more backing, and that's got the whole financial system uneasy. the dow is down about 500 points this morning. it had been done as much as 700 with all bank stocks falling. back here at home, s&p cut its rating of san francisco-based first republic. that stock down, too, but so, too, is every bank. first republic's ceo telling cnbc it's not see manager depositors ask for their money back and the crisis seems to have passed. it was a run on deposits that ruined silicon valley bank last week. the failure hit home because it was the bank that helped fund start-ups, the kind that changed the world. i spoke with a high-tech lobbyist. >> people talk a lot about the need for new com

our scott mcgrew says the big question is, will everyone get their money back? scott? >> yes, good morning. the financial forms that the bank public show it has more assets than deposits, so at least logically, everybody should be made whole and should be able to cover its depositors. if for system reason they can't, fdic only insures up to $250,000 for an account. silicone valley banks are venture capitalist firms, dealing with numbers that are not in the hundreds of thousands but the millions. and the other big question for most people whose accounts have maybe thousands or hundreds of dollars in them, they don't generally use silicone valley bank, and if they are using any other bank, we can state here that those banks are safe. this is not a contagion. it's a very strange one-off that affects silicone bally bank and no other. we will have reporting for you on monday morning on "today in the bay" and then midday after the bank reopens on monday. >> everyone is waiting with bated breath. >>> still to come, breaking records during women's history month. a new achievem

. >> we have scott mcgrew joining us now.the money he wants the government to collect, too. >> it will be the collection, i think, where you see the most push back. good morning. collection as new taxes. the white house says new taxes only for the very rich starting with billionaires and moving down to those who make $400,000 a year or more. there will be additional taxes on capital gains and stock buybacks as well. the president says he needs that extra money to protect medicare. the medical insurance for the needy and the extra will reduce the budget or deficit by $3 trillion over the next ten years. it is the president that sets the budget, but congress actually decides whether or not to approve it. republicans say they don't like the president's budget. the white house complains republicans have not offered ideas or budgets or numbers of their own. republicans have said they will not raise taxes, but in order to protect medicare and social security, they have to propose huge cuts somewhere else. we don't know where those

. >>> meanwhile, scott mcgrew continues to cover donald trump's woes. >> we are still waiting for theouncement from the grand jury in manhattan, but there are four investigations into trump and the one from mar-a-lago and the classified documents is the one causing him the most problems. the judge ruled that the crime fraud exception negates some attorney/client privilege, in other words, trump's attorney could be a witness and requested and the private documents could be turned over to the prosecution. as for the manhattan case, the grand jury has been called back. this is the one trump himself expect to be arrested over. it's getting big attention because it's the first potential indictment, but it's really not the most serious. some washington republicans, meanwhile, indicating they are willing to investigate the prosecutors investigating trump. jim jordan of ohio sent letters to two manhattan prosecutors who he claims pressured the d.a. in going forward with the case against the former president. everybody has been wrong on their predictions before, but there are three prosecutors
