scott mclean is standing by in one of the villages where it took place. what's the story there?reporter: there's a huge sense of relief in three villages. this is one of the places where the shooting took place. you can see, this is a very rural area. a wide-open area. this shooter, frankly, could have been anywhere. the manhunt was massive, involving some 600 officers over a very wide swath. we saw them 20 miles away from here on the highway combing it hours ago. we're more than eight hours from when the shooting took place. we spoke to one man in the village, who said at the time, he was arrested by police who m mistakenly thought he was the shooter who came out of his house after he got emergency notification of his phone. he asked me, once we got the news, when arrests had been made whether it was safe to come out because he hasn't gotten it. only then did he emerge from his house. the arrest was made in a larger city more than an hour away from here in central serbia. the shootings, as we said, took place in rural areas. we went to the site of what we think is the initial s

cnn's scott mclean is live in london. he joins us now. t, what more are police saying about why they've returned to this reservoir to search for clues in the disappearance of madeleine mccann? >> yeah, so rosemary, we don't have the full picture here, but we are getting bits and pieces of it. and part of the puzzle here appears to be that there were photos, as you mentioned, on the prime suspect's computer, christian brueckner, a convicted sex offender in his mid-40s of this dam and reservoir area which may have led investigators back to this spot. he apparently spent a lot of time at this reservoir area at the time he lived in portugal, which is the same time that madeleine mccann went missing. and patiently he called it his paradise. we're talking about a very vast area, a sort of scrubland area that stretches on for quite a large ways, kilometers and kilometers. so on the surface, it seems that this might be a need until the hay haystack. but our colleagues at cnn portugal say police say they are searching a very defined area of this re

scott mclean is tracking the investigation, live from london, he joins us now. od morning to you, scott, so, what more are you learning about this new search for madeleine mccann? >> good morning. the search area is a mountainous, bushy scrubland area around this very vast reservoir, surrounded by parkland and walking trails but the reason they are going back to this is because of a tip by german authorities who are involved here because the prime suspect, named by german prosecutors is a german man who is already jailed in that country for other crimes. it is not clear why they are going back to search this place in particular, but our colleagues at cnn portugal report that police say they are looking for objects which might be of interest or, to rule out other hypotheses. the reservoir, here, itself, has already been searched by divers 15 years ago, back in 2008. in that case, they turned up only animal bones. this time, the focus of the search will be on land, all in the hopes of a breakthrough in a case that has gone unsolved for 16 years, now. >> reporter: m

cnn's scott mclean is live in london. he joins us now. good morning to you scott.t more are you learning about this? >> good morning, rosemary. so president zelenskyy did this wide ranging interview with "washington post." and if it he revealed, as you mentioned, that he had not heard from the white house or the pentagon before he actually learned about this leak of pentagon classified documents from news reports. so this is part of what he told "the washington post." he said i did not receive information from the white house or the pentagon beforehand. we did not have that information. i personally did not. it's definitely a bad story. now those leaked classified documents from the pentagon which were allegedly taken by 21-year-old air national guardsman who is now under arrest revealed things like potential battlefield plans. they revealed potentially that ukraine was running low on vital air defense ammunition and plenty of other bits of sensitive information. a source close to president zelenskyy said at the time of the leaks ukraine had altered its battlefield

for more scott mclean joins us from london. so scott, what more are we learning about the so-called shaping operation and the counteroffensive that will presumably follow? >> reporter: yeah, so the question is whether or not the counteroffensive has begun at all. and for the answer it really depends on who you ask. if you ask president zelenskyy, he says that ukrainians need a bit more time to get more western weapons, more western equipment into the country before they can really begin that counteroffensive. but if you ask the head of the wagner private military contractor on the russian side, yevgeny prigozhin, he says that zelenskyy is lying and that the counteroffensive is already in full swing. and he points to the situation in bakhmut where even he concedes that the ukrainians have had some success as of late. the actual ukrainian military says that yes, it has been able to exploit some russian weaknesses on the flanks of the city, particularly the northern and southern parts of the tee where there is dynamic fighting in t

cnn's scott mclean joins me to discuss. a third decade in power for recip tayyip erdogan, what will his leadership do for turks and turkish relations in the wider world? >> well, it depends on the u.s. this is also something a very contentious election, this is something that the opposition took to an extreme level. this is the first time in turk history that they have gone to a runoff. erdogan was not able to get half the electorate to vote for him on the first poll. in terms of issues, divisive issues, things like syrian refugees, the government's response to the earthquakes. and one of the biggest thing reflects on turkey's inflation. that hit 85% in the past year. some say it was even higher than that. and the government's response to that has been extremely unconventional to actually lower interest rates, rather than raise them which is what's happened in the rest of the western world. given the issues here, it's a wonder that erdogan did as well as he did. being incumbent comes with advantages. case in point, state tv

. >> and cnn's scott mclean joins me now live from london. scott, how is this being reported across britain and what details do you have on how this all played out? >> reporter: if you look at the british press this morning and some of the major tabloids is none of them at least from what i can tell are actually using any of the photos that were taken during this pursuit, this paparazzi pursuit of harry and meghan. the couple's argument is that publishing those photos would encourage what they call a highly intrusive and dangerous practice and it seems so far that at least the british tabloids are taking this to heart though one american gossip celebrity website has not. those photos are still up there. now, there were actually police involved with this whole thing. there was a police car escorting them, at least one that we know, and the reason why, you know, they weren't able to sort of escape the press more easily is this wasn't a diplomatic escort. this wasn't closing roads, lights and sirens, that kind of a thing. this was having the pol

and cnn's scott mclean is following developments for us. he joins us now live from london. good morning to you, scott. what is the latest on these recent strikes across ukraine and in russia, an patiently new strategy? >> look, rosemary, there have been plenty of mysterious explosions on russian soil since the outset of the war. it's just that the ukrainians rarely if ever actually acknowledge them. in the case of this explosion on the train in the region of russia, both sides have some incentive to downplay this, because the ukrainians don't want to provoke any kind of response, and the russians don't really want to acknowledge to their own citizens that there is war taking place on russian soil. so the ukrainians in the case of this train explosion have not acknowledged it at all. the local governor, though, says this was not accident. it was an ied planted on board. and the russians say the only thing on those trains was construction supplies and oil products. now bryansk has been at the center of plenty of back and forth as of late. you had the governor just today saying

scott mclean is joining me live. what moments stood out for you today?: fredricka, i think what stood out to me is just the fact that people don't want to go home. we're now four hours clear of all of the pomp and pageantry wrapping up, and you can see there's still tons of people coming and going just to soak in the atmosphere. this is the arch where the king would have passed by twice today, and people have come from all over the world, really, and i've been surprised by the number of people i've met from places that you would not expect it. i have also met people who camped out for, in some cases, days or even overnight. i met a 77-year-old woman who camped out, not even with a tent, but just in a lawn chair and an umbrella overnight. when i spoke to her after the coronation as she was leaving, she could not have been in better spirits. it was pretty remarkable to see. the ceremony itself went off, really, without a hitch, save for one moment where the king was a little bit too prompt in getting to westminster abbey, and his son, the prince of wales,

scott mclean is joining us from london. any idea how long the shaping operations could last and does it say anything about any larger momentum here? >> this could go on for days. some is something that we also saw ahead of the ukrainian counteroffensive last summer which resulted in the ukrainians taking back a wide swathe of territory in the kherson region. but russians aren't just lying down and taking this. there have been some 80 reported attacks in the last days in the kherson region alone. but the reality is that ukrainians have had some success on the battlefield in the heavily fought over city of bakhmut in eastern ukraine. they are undoubtedly on the offensive there. the deputy defense minister says that they have taken back about a mile and a quarter of territory the last week or so. ukrainians say they have been able to exploit gaps in the russian flanks. the president says ukrainians need more time to get weaponry in the country before the official counteroffensive can begin. head of wagner mercenary group says

cnn's scott mclean is live in london with more. ere in the united states, but this is very rare to see a school shooting like this, any kind of mass shooting in serbia. >> yeah, that's absolutely right. certainly not a common occurrence, which is why this is getting so, so much attention, because it is so out of the ordinary. and we're just getting bits and pieces of information coming in right now, kaitlan. but i'll tell you what we know. this happened at a school called the vladislav in an upscale neighborhood in belgrade. this happened to the ministry of internal affairs around 8:40 in the morning or so. so early on in the school day local time. they say a 14-year-old boy, who they say is a seventh grader. they're identifying him only by his initials, k.k., brought his father's gun to school and started firing. as you mentioned, nine people have been killed, eight of them children. one of them was a school security guard. seven injured, six of them children. one of them was a teacher. we also know that a young girl inside that sc

cnn's scott mclean is in london. earlier you were mentioning, people keep coming and it's many hours after the coronation. do they continue to arrive at buckingham palace? >> reporter: more than five hours, now, fredricka, from when all of this wrapped up, and, well, you tell me. they're still here. and i just want to point out something interesting. if you look at the top of buckingham palace, you will see the union jack, but you will not see the royal standard, which means the monarch is not in the building. we saw his motorcade and his son prince william's motorcade leaving earlier, and yet people are just trying to soak up the atmosphere. in fact, this roundabout here in front of the palace is where the procession, the parade, the monarch came by earlier today, up the mall, where it was lined with people. and some of them camped out literally for days, and i've been shocked by this, especially since the weather has been so miserable, raining on and off. after it was all done, i met a 77-year-old woman who camped

scott mclean has more on this. and scott, what more are you learning about this accident now?ne. there is still frankly, a lot of unanswered questions, but what we know at this point is that sunday evening, a houseboat set sail on lake maggiore outside of milan, and there were no official weather warnings at the time, and yet this boat out there for a birthday party managed to capsize in what italian media is describing or suggesting what may have been a random out of the blue waterspout. so some of the 20 survivors swam to shore, and others were rescued and four bodies were recovered and this morning the focus was trying to get the boat out of the bottom of the lake. adding to the mystery here as you mentioned is that two of the four victims here were active italian secret service agents which in italy does not mean presidential protection, but intelligence officials according to italy. a third victim was a retired member of israeli security forces, according to the israelis, and israeli media is reporting that this man was not supposed to be on that boat to begin with, and h

cnn's scott mclean is joining me right now from london. scott, you first.s is a celebratory mood. still, what's it like on this side of the coronation now? >> yeah. still very much a party atmosphere. still very much a festive atmosphere. in fact, it wasn't long ago that the king and i could see from the window prince william as well came out in cars with an entourage and there was a crowd there to snap pictures and cheer as they waved. what really strikes me here is you don't often see outward displays of british patriotism. this is not necessarily a nation of flag fliers on a day to day basis. certainly not everyone was happy. there were anti-monarchy protesters as well out making their voices heard, some of them chanting "not my king." controversially, some of them were also arrested by the london metropolitan police for what seems like very little. police put out a statement later explaining there was a conspiracy to cause public nuisance. in other words, they planned to disrupt things, planned to attach themselves to buildings or the road. this would b

co sk scott mclean is joining us. >> yes, this is based on u.s. intelligence.o we don't know what kind intelligence, or how reliable it might be. but still it is a massive number considering since the start of the year the u.s. says killed or wounded on the russian side is more than 100,000. 20,000 killed in the line of fire on the front lines. and the u.s. also says that nearly half of those were wagner fighters whom we know have been doing a good chunk of the fighting in bakhmut. that is an important town that the russians have put so much effort into trying to take but with limited success. and almost comical the gap between the u.s. estimate and the number of casualties that the head of wagner says that they have lost which is just 94. something that john kirby national security official calls ludicrous. and he also said that he won't be releasing any ukrainian estimated casualties because u.s. doesn't want to do in i go in his words to make it harder for them. >> and tell us about the russian freight train that exploded. >> the governor there says it was a

scott mclean has more. and the picture of that beautiful little girl.estigators have? >> the reason that they are going back to the area is based on a tip from german prosecutors who are investigating a suspect named christian bruckner, a known pedophile. this is a bushy scrub land area about 35 miles or so from the resort town where madeleine mccann went missing from. it is also an area that police had actually searched back in 2008 in the reservoir there itself. and in that case they found animal bones but nothing else. we understand from our colleagues in portugal that this time around, this two day search, will be focusing on the land area. now, this case from the get go back in 2007 has been filled with twists and turns. the mccanns themselves, the parents, initially viewed as suspects. there was a lot of criticism about the initial police response to this as well. and it wasn't until 2020 that the german prosecutors announced that they had a suspect named christian bruckner. and it seems like that they have a lot of circumstantial ed against him.

scott mclean is keeping track of all of these developments. has the uk government asked for guarantees from ukraine that they won't strike outside of their sovereign territory? >> reporter: the short answer is yes, because that is one of the main concerns. but this is actually a promise made by british prime minister rishi sunak earlier this year to provide longer range missile systems to ukraine. so they have got this system now, multiple of it, a cruise missile called storm shadow and the defense minister said this -- >> storm shadow is a long range conventional only provision strike capability. it complements the long range systems already given including himars as well as ukraine's own neptune cruise missile. the donation of these weapons systems gives ukraine the best chance to defend themselves against russia's continued brutality. >> this is a weapon typically fired from an aircraft. it flies at a very low altitude which makes it hard for air defense systems to shoot it down and detect it. it also uses a computer system on board to try

scott mclean is live in london with more.were basically hiding out in a police precinct trying to get away from the paparazzi. has the royal family responded to the incident? >> reporter: no response, no comment from buckingham palace or kensington palace. sussexs say no one from the royal family has reached out to them either. but we have gotten a statement from one of the photography agencies that says that it had four photographers there. and that its freelancers had a professional responsibility to be there and denied that there were any near collisions and they even accused one of the sussex drivers as part of their four car convoy of driving in a way that some may perceive as reckless. no one has claimed that this was a high speed chase but the reason it dragged on for so long is because the sussexs were intent on making sure the photographers didn't follow them back to the place that they were actually staying. so after about an hour and a half of trying to lose the pack of paparazzi with no luck, they ended up going b

scott mclean is joining me. still hearing from witnesses involved in the events. >> latest is from one of the celebrity photography agencies that had four freelancers there, three in a vehicle, one was riding a bicycle throughout all of this. and they say that look, these photographers had a professional duty to be there, a professional responsibility to be there to cover this. they also accused one of the suvs in prince harry's motorcade, there were four vehicles in it, of driving in a way that could be perceived as reckless. they also reported that there were no near crashes as the sussex statement has made clear that they felt that these people were driving in and i will legal and dangerous kind of manner. obviously as you mentioned new york police department has described it in more benign terms saying the presence of the photographers made the journey much more challenging. the reason it lasted two hours we're talking about here is because the sussexs weren't going that far, but they didn't want to go home

cnn's scott mclean has the details live from london.and how seriously was it taken at the time? >> reporter: remember that 1983, this was the time when the irish republican army was in the midst of a terror campaign to try to get northern ireland reunited with the republic of ireland. these documents show the fbi was on high alert when it came to british royalty visiting the united states. one of these memos shows that there was a very loose plan reported of someone wanting to assassinate the queen. someone called in saying that a patron at a well-known irish republican bar in san francisco said that his daughter had been killed by a rubber bullet in northern ireland, quote, claimed he was going to attempt to harm queen elizabeth and would do this by dropping an object off the golden gate bridge onto the royal yacht. it's not clear what exactly the follow-up was. it's important to keep in mind this was marked priority. by the time it gets to the fbi, it's also fifth-hand information. even more benign protests were treated very seriously

scott mclean is near the scene of the second shooting. >> surfers today are waking up to a headline that seems quite unbelievable. and less than 48, hours a second mass shooting has taken place. authorities say that this one happened in this field, in this rural area between two very small villages, about 50, 60 kilometers south of belgrade. so, there's a soccer pitch, they're locals say there's also barbecue area, where young people like to hang out. there is also a vehicle there where the windows have apparently been shot out. , and this is where the shooting is alleged to have taken place. authorities say it happened with a automatic weapon. something that is banned in this country, generally. there are illegal weapons still circulating in the country, backed over from conflict in the 1990s. but automatic weapons are heavily restricted for civilians. , and even getting a semi automatic weapon in the country, requires jumping through a lot of checks, and a lot of hoops. there is now a massive manhunt taking place across a very wide swath of the, country a very rural area as well. there

cnn scott mclean has the details. >> reporter: madeline mccann would have turned 20 this month-her familymily holiday in the algarv region of portugal. she was with her younger twin siblings while her parents were dining with friends nearby. mystery of her disappearance gripped many across the uk, portugal. >> tuesday, portuguese police at the request of german authorities will he seven a reservoir around 50 kilometers. over the past 16 years, police have searched numerous wells and properties in the area, including this one which was searched in to 08. it is unclear whether it's connected to christian brueckner, the german suspect first named in the case in 2020. brueckner, a convicted sex offenders, lived there during 1995 and 2007. in an apartment about a mile away from the resort with the mccanns were staying. he is in prison in germany for the rape and murder of a 72-year-old woman committed in portugal at the same resort. he has not been charged in mccann's disappearance and denies any involvement. but one german prosecutor said he believes she was killed by brueckner. >> what makes
