with scott pelley. >> pelley: good evening, washington left for christmas tonight with most americans facing a major tax increase in ten days. negotiations to avoid that went off the rails last night when some house republicans refused to go along with their own leadership. this evening, the president described himself as a hopeless optimist who was ready and willing to make a deal, but the speaker of the house said how we get there god only knows. we have two reports tonight. first, we'll go to major garrett at the white house. major? >> reporter: scott, tonight there is no bill written to avert the fiscal cliff. there is no road map to the drafting of that legislation. there are only hopes and aspirations-- both much smaller than the president would prefer. this is the president's own plan "b", a scaled-back bill that seeks to protect tax rates for households earning less than $250,000 and extend jobless benefits for two million americans out of work for six months or more. it's a shadow of the big deal contemplated only days ago. >> in ten days we face a deadline. in ten days, unde

this is the "cbs evening news" with scott pelley. >> axelrod: good evening. scott's off tonight. i'm jim axelrod. a lot of holiday plans are out the window tonight due to a powerful storm system that stranded travelers on highways and at airports. it's blamed in at least six deaths. in the south, there are reports that 41 tornadoes have touched down since yesterday. one of them sheered off the front of the trinity episcopal church in mobile, alabama. luckily, no one was injured. the same system brought a blizzard to parts of the midwest, forcing the cancellation of more than 1,400 flights. tonight, it's headed to the northeast. winter storm warnings have already been posted. troy kehoe of our cbs station in indianapolis begins our coverage. troy? >> reporter: well, jim, here in bloomington, indiana, we've already seen 11.5 inches of snow so far, and it is still coming down with blizzard conditions here in the midwest. this has been a two-day storm leaving much of the country paralyzed. blinding snow with wind gusts topping 35 miles an hour have created whiteout conditions in the

as scott pelley first reported in march of 2008, this charity, founded to help people who can't reachal care, had found a new mission throwing america a lifeline. >> in a matter of hours, remote area medical set up its massive clinic in an exhibit hall for a weekend in knoxville, tennessee. tools for dentists were laid out by the yard, optometrists prepared to make hundreds of pairs of glasses, general medical doctors set up for whatever might come through the door. nearly everything is donated, everyone is a volunteer, the care is free, but no one could say how many patients might show up. the first clue came a little before midnight, when stan brock, the founder of remote area medical, opened the gate outside the exhibit hall. the clinic wouldn't open for seven hours, but people in pain didn't want to chance being left out. state guardsmen came in for crowd control. they handed out what would become precious slips of paper. >> number six. >> okay. >> numbered tickets to board what amounted to a medical lifeboat. >> we brought some snacks and blankets with. >> well, i hope you stay w
