christie smith joins us with details about how cal trans claims to fix this new problem, christie. >> good morning, scott. happy friday. this time we're talking about steel rods that have shifted since they were installed. just the latest issue that popped up on this new $6.4 billion bay bridge, that according to "the chronicle" this morning. engineers say more than 200 rods can actually move towards sharp edge plates in the event of an earthquake, possibly damaging the eastern span's main cable. this latest concern came to light fairly recently within the past couple of months. what they're saying is that when cal trans inspected the rods they held the mile-long cable in place but the rods have moved and now no extra wiggle room needed between them and the steel reinforcement plate. this isn't the first issue here in 2013, 32 high-strength rods failed and it was also brought to light that there were leaks when it rains. repairs are in the works now for this latest situation. they may come from simply trying to center the fasteners, again, or create bigger gaps for more wiggle room in the event of a quak

smith live in san jose. the tsa inspected the airport just a couple weeks before this happened. >> that's right, scott. inspected and approved the fence line here in san jose. as you can imagine, senator barbara boxer had a lot of questions and icisms on how that can be. how a 15-year-old was able to get over that fence and into a wheel well to make it to hawaii after that inspection. the santa clara teen was apparently trying to get back to his mom in africa. his survival and story grabbing wor worldwide attention. the tsa administrator said at a senate committee hearing between january and late march, the tsa conducted a comprehensive inspection and found sjc did meet all security requirements. they reviewed things like barriers, electronic access, badging system and law enfor enforcement support. the tsa regulates outside the terminal and with 450 airport there's is no one size fits all, so they inspect each one. >> their fencing was in fine shape but at least one prior secretary of homeland security said show me a 15-foot sense and i'll show you a 16-foot ladder. there is no perfect solution so we

smith, nbc bay area news. >> christie, thank you. let's bring in mike inouye. and this closure is going to have some effect. in fact, it already is, mike, as things begin to bog down. >> scott, that's whatwe we're seeing right now. we expect at 11:06 on a friday to see a backup. but let's look at the live sensors for our maps. we have a slow drive across that span. the backup getting into the city very popular, but this is slower than we typically have. there was an earlier incident at treasure island, westbound, but that has long since cleared. getting into the city, getting off of the bay bridge in towards southbound 101, picking up all this overload as folks avoid that approach of 280 that christie smith was talking about. now, anywhere south of cesar chavez, if you get on south of there, you're just fine for southbound 280. let's look at your best bet, though. to avoid the area altogether, but if you have to go that way, here's some suggestions for you. caltrans says southbound traffic, you can detour 101 we just showed you, but surface street traffic, mariposa and 18th street, very tough getting there. same thing for southbound pennsylvania avenue, which runs alongside

"today in the bay" christie smith live by the police department with an update on the baby's condition. good morning. >> good morning to you, scottthe latest word we have from concord police is that the baby is still hospitalized listed in stable condition after drowning in a backyard swimming pool mother's day, yesterday. it took a joint effort to save this baby' life and certainly a reminder of the things that might happen as kids try to cool off with these hot temperatures we're going to see this week. concord police were called to a home on ducker court about 6:15 yesterday evening. a report of a baby who drowned in a backyard pool. concord police arrived and found that baby nonresponsive being cared for by family members who tried to revive the child. concord police took over life-saving measures until paramedics could arrive moments later. that baby taken to the medical center and then another hospital for treatment. i have reached out to concord police this morning and no word exactly on how the baby ended up in the pool in the first place. certainly a reminder about water safety and children as temperatures heat up this w

"today in the bay" christie smith joins us live in oakland with details on why an amber alert hasn't been issued. good morning. >> good morning to you, scott. i just got off the phone with the missing person's unit at the oakland police department. they are still trying to taerm whether this case is eligible to call for an amber alert but they're not saying what the circumstances of her becoming missing are in the first place. we are moving in on 12 hours since a 7-year-old girl was last seen here in oakland on 73rd avenue. and police are asking for the public's help in finding her. she is four feet tall, 50 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and black tennis shoes. oakland police are parked out front this morning and they released this information overnight with very few details on the circumstances of how she went missing in the first place or if she was seen with anyone. but they do say that she is at risk, obviously, because of her young age. again, last seen at 6:00 p.m. near her home here on 73rd. of course, everyone is hoping she comes home safe. reporting live in oakland, christie smi

assistant and let's begin with christie smith who joins us live in fremont where one bay area family is grieving this morning. good morning. >> good morning to you, scott. that's right, we spoke with a family friend of weihan wang. she says he is the family's only child,nly son and that they are just devastated by what has happened and can't accept that their 20-year-old son is gone. a student at uc santa barbara there to study computer science. she immigrated with the family from china to the united states ten years ago. at this point authorities say it's not clear if wang was a roommate with elliot rodger or perhaps a visitor to the apartment but one of the three young men stabbed to death in that apartment and all uc santa barbara students victims in the isla vista rampage. wang had a very friendly personality and seemed to get along with everyone. >> really, really friendly to everybody. not have any conflict with anybody. that's what i said, no reason. >> she says that he graduated from fremont christian school here in the bay area and this tragedy makes her scared to send her own son away to college next year. she tells us that wang's family is e

"today in the bay" christie smith joins us from the funeral home where the driver and the passenger, christie, escaped all these flames. >> yeah, good morning to you, scott and peggy. that's the amazing part of this whole story. when you look at how this burned wreckage looks just sitting here, the cab is completely gone. i have an update for you eastbound lanes just reopened and westbound lanes may be a while because they're waiting for more crews to show up. firefighters saying, again, it is amazing that the people inside made it out on their own. we do have a picture that was posted on twitter this morning of this big rig on fire after it slammed into the building here on market street between sanchez. the driver telling police that he lost control and firefighters say that the truck crossed the center median and police say he heard an explosion in the truck which is refrigerated for food. this happened around 12:30. the truck on fire, at least diesel fuel burning down market street and sullivan's funeral home caught fire, too, on the outside. there was actually a woman inside who thought it was just a street crash, but then looked outside and saw the

the bay" christie smith joins us live by laumbard street on details why neighbors support the possible closure, i would imagine. good morning, christie. >> good morning to you, scott and laura. we just drove it this morning on the way to our story and easy to forget what kind of white knuckle drive it is. you is have to hold on and pump the brakes. it is a fun ride, but you forget that there are neighbors nearby and what some of them are saying that the tourism they're seeing is just too much. the crooked street is packed with cars and spewing exhaust and people driving, hanging out of windows, snapping selfies as they go down and some rolling rocks down to see what they'll do. what is happening now is what maybe they're saying is that it spills over into the russian hill neighborhood. so, today the municipal transportation agency will consider a summer shutdown. this is almost temporary for about four weeks between june 21 and july 13th from noon to 6:00 also on the fourth of july, which happens to fall on a friday this year. mta says that the long lines of cars can create safety issues spilling out to other streets. as you can imagine, for tourists, well, they'r

bay" christie smith joins us live at the crash site with an update including what happened to the passenger and driver of this truck that was on fire. >> yeah, good morning to you, scott. you have to see this wreckage is pretty amazing when you look at it and see it's still sitting here this morning as it ended up. there was a small explosion according to the driver who says he lost control and crossed over market street and then clipped the side of this building and then a ball of flames and even firefighters say looking at this wreck sitting here, they thought, there would be fatalities. the two people who were inside of this actually made it out on their own. it was 12:30 overnight when firefighters arrived to find a big rig had clipped the side of sullivan's funeral home here on market street. the corner exterior of the building was burning, too. the driver of this big rig told police he heard some sort of explosion inside the unit and that's when he lost control. at sullivan's funeral home there was actually one person inside when this happened. >> we have a lady that lives here, she was here and she thought it was just a traffic accident out on market street. sh

scott mcgrew. this morning students will head back to the class for the first time that a student was allegedly attacked by a mother. she was trying to defend her daughter from a bully. christie smith joins us live. the mother facing some serious charges this morning. >> that's right. felony child abuse is the charge here. bullying is something schools have been dealing with and it is a buzz word. this story comes with a twist. according to sheriff deputies a mom came to this school in santa rosa looking for what she believed was her daughter's bully. when she found that child, an 11-year-old boy, she confronted him and apparently grabbed him by the throat. school staff at olivet elementary school acknowledged this report right after it happened on friday at 1:40. she came to the school at lunchtime without checking in at the office, which is something parents are usually asked to do and she asked her son, who goes to the this school to point out an 11-year-old boy that she believes was bullying her 10-year-old daughter. investigators say she confronted the boy about the bullying and then grabbed him by the throat in front of other students that were there. no adults certainly witn
