take a listen to republican scott taylor from virginia on cnn this morning. >> i think last night was i don't think there is any way you can look at it in a different way to be honest with you. >> we took a look at the numbers. here is the thing, gillespie actually did get his voters to the polls. in the deep red parts of virginia, he did better than the 2013 republican candidate for governor ken cuccinelli. he did better numerically than he did in 2014 when he almost won. in fact, ed gillespie got more votes than any republican candidate for governor in the history of the commonwealth of virginia ever. but ultimately democrat ralph northam shellacked him with the largest margin for a victory for a democrat in virginia since 1985 that's was partly due to the huge turnout for the democrats in the suburbs. in loudoun county, in 2014 gillespie almost tied his democratic opponent in that county. this time the democrat took 60% of the vote. better than hillary clinton's share of the vote in 2016 and she won virginia. better than the democratic governor in 2013. now, granted it was a tough

scott taylor, republican congressman from virginia last night says he blames in part the president's divisive rhetoric and also says, i do believe this is a referendum on the administration. is he right? >> yeah, i think he is. off year elections are not always a great measure of what's going to happen in the midterms. in the '97 a republican won in virginia and didn't do well in '9 8. that said, we're getting close to midterms. part of this was about democrats. the democrats are enthused and energized not necessarily because they like their party but they don't like the president of the united states. second is what ron said, president trump has this strategy that you play to the base and you win elections. the reality is he needs to win a broader part of the republican party. he needs that partisan loyalty to carry the gop through. and that's not what happened last night. many republicans are not enthused. so that's a problem for the gop. >> go ahead, ron. >> can i just add real quickly, you know, i think what was most important about virginia was that you saw that many of the fund

scott taylor was pretty clear saying that the results in his state of virginia was a clear repudiationld trump. listen, it's a very sobering reality for republicans at this point. normally it's incumbents win at about a 90% rate in midterm elections. people like their congressman, even though they complain about congress overall. but this is a different cycle, and republicans need to pay attention. the democrats only need 24 seeds to take over the house next year and usually the average is about 36 seats for off-year elections if the president's approval rating is under 50%. that's been the case since 1946. so that would be 36 seats just on average and so the environment is not good for republicans. the momentum is clearly with democrats and donald trump is becoming a drag on republicans. >> do you see anything from this past year that will change that going forward for the midterms? >> well, yes. it's a long ways away. it could be -- we have to see where we are. if congress doesn't get anything passed, especially tax reform. if people don't see real change, they're going to rebel agai

what is your reaction, your colleague, scott taylor, called this a referendum on the president. do you agree with that? >> no, i don't agree with that at all. i think it's a referendum on exactly what the news is. if the news reports on the exit polls, the number one issue is health care. our side failed to nationalize the election. the democrats did it, we failed. 40% increase in premiums going out in the news under obamacare. we failed to tell people that's a democrat bill. second issue on the exit polls is the economy. two-thirds of the folks going out said virginia is doing great economically. it grew last year at 0.6%. we failed to tell people, virginia is not growing. and that growth supports the government jobs of northern virginia. so they don't know that it's coming to an end, unless you get growth. and finally, we're doing tax cuts and the democrats and the progressive budget increase taxes 10 trillion. we forgot to tell them that. so the democrats did a good job of nationalizing the election -- >> i'm not sure your numbers are right on the growth in virginia. i think
