at scott and white, 5 patients. at parkland hospital in dallas, we understand two patients were taken there. and, also, let's talk about the casualties. early on we heard from fire officials that they were concerned that casualties could rise as high as 70. this latest number that we're hearing, anywhere from 5 to 15, that is the newest number we're hearing. and also three to five firefighters missing. also, i want to talk about the weather conditions as well. we were covering some severe storms in oklahoma just a few hours ago. and this storm system right now here in texas, you know, the air is still, temperatures are warm, but here in the next couple of hours these conditions will change. it will hamper the investigation, the search and rescue. but again, as you heard even martin savidge indicate and we heard that official, not as concerned about that anhydrous ammonia, that fire, they're not as concerned about the winds shifting that. initially there was some thought about evacuating the other part of the town. a

at scott & white, which is a level one trauma center, they saw five patients. of them are children in critical condition at this hour. we understand that there were also three other patients there, three adults, two of those adults in critical condition and one in stable condition. we also know now, john that two people were sent to dallas, texas, the parkland hospital. still unclear their condition. the total count that we have right now, 173 people injured in this situation. >> all right, george. just to be clear, that number, we've had it for a little while. you haven't seen a new wave of injured there? >> you know, we are diligently checking with these hospitals to keep up. it's a fluid situation, especially, chris, as we have daylight and we, you know, learn more from these investigators as they go house by house looking for victims, looking for the potentially dead. at this point the casualty number we understand is anywhere from 5 to 15. that number is significantly less than what we initially heard from firefighters who said it could be as high as 70. n

our sister hospital, memorial, scott white at temple is also assisting. we've been able to gain the support of our maclaine's children's hospital where we've shipped two children to them, where they would receive a higher level of pediatric care. and so things are continuing to move along and accelerate at this particular time. the number of patients that we're seeing. we have great support from our sister hospital across town. providence hospital. that emergency room has been backing us up, and not been in touch with their ceo. they're doing a great job this evening helping us at the regional trauma center as well. >> glenn, what kinds of patients have you seen? you mentioned children. but in terms of the age range, do you have a lot of elderly patients or at this point do you not have a lot of elderly patients? >> the majority of patients i've seen at this time are just regular families, moms, dads, children that were in their home s or in the apartment complex. some were brought by ambulance, some were brought by private vehicle. we are blessed that th

scott white memorial which is 30 miles farther to the south, they have also treated several patientss evening. we transferred two pediatric patients to our children's hospital that we knew immediately they would benefit from a higher level of pediatric care. and also area community hospitals have treated additional patients as well. we don't have a total number that have been treated by all the facilities in our region, but it is certainly probably -- at least 150 or more. i'm pleased to report to you, in talking to our trauma surgeons who are here 24 hours a day, seven days a week at our trauma center, they are telling us that probably tonight we will probably wind up admitting 82 of those patients. some have already been treated and released. others will probably be treated and released somewhere between now and daybreak or shortly thereafter. >> wa kind of injuries are you seeing? how serious are the injuries to the patients that you're treating there? >> there are a number of minor injuries and minor lacerations and those types of things. as you would expect. >> mr. robinson, wha

we know that two patients are pediatric trauma patients who were transferred to scott & white mclean's children's hops. we heard word about the nursing home near the plant. 12 elderly patients taken to the hospital, taken to alternative nursing facilities. in addition to children admitted, transferred, we know 15 patients treated and released, and released to their families, to their friend. that's what we know about this one hospital alone, and i spoke -- we heard from glen robinson. we get a better sense of the injuries that they are dealing with, listen to this. >> we have seen, as you would expect in this type of blast, a lot of lacerations. we have seen some large, some puncture wounds. taking care of a number of broken bones, dislocated hips and fractured hips, fractured legs, those types of things, we have also -- our neurosurgical trauma team, taken care of a handful of patients that have had head injuries. >> reporter: so i spoke with robinson a few minutes ago. he said we will get a new update around 3:00 p.m. central time. a lot of information, but i want to run through this

white house for us today. and major, you're seeing some activity around there, even. >> yes, the security development we're sharing with you, scott. right now the secret service just to my right on the outside of the perimetre of the white house is beginning to cordon off pennsylvania avenue just north of this entrance to the white house. there is a considerable number of secret service vehicles moving into the scene. pedestrians are not being allowed to approach the white house along pennsylvania avenue. on the southern side and now they're beginning to put yellow security tape near the southernmost part of lafayette scare. so there is a little bit of a security situation on pennsylvania avenue simply to limit pedestrian access to the closest part of the white house fence. that has something that we see with some regularity but it clearly in response to this event in boston. we reported earlier that there is some activity of this kind in new york going on. cities on the eastern seaboard appear to be sensitized highly to what is going on in boston and we're seeing some secret service activity just outside the northwest gate here

scott pelley. >> reporter: sources say investigators are trying to identify a person identified as a young white man who was scene in the crowd near the second bombing before the device exploded. a surveillance camera at a nearby lord & taylor department store captured images of the man who was carrying a backpack and talking on a cell phone. sources say he was wearing a black jacket, gray hoodie and a white baseball cap which was backwards on his head. investigators say the man-- who seemed to be alone-- put the backpack on the ground. then when the first explosion occurred at the finish line about a hundred yards down boylston street, he took off. just a few seconds later, the second bomb exploded near where the man had been standing. investigators now are going through cell phone logs to determine who made calls from that location near the time of the explosions. sources say the f.b.i. is working with a list of names of cell phone owners and attempting to match one of those to the unknown man on the surveillance tape. sauces say forensic experts will attempt to use facial recognition software

white house officials said he offered whatever assistance is needed in the response of the ensuing investigation. for more we turn to scott malone of reuters who was on the scene in boston. i spoke with him a few minutes ago. scott malone of reuters, thank you so much for joining us. what is the best, most recent information we have on what happened today? >> well, what we're hearing from boston police department at this point in time confirmed is two people dead. 23 injured. getting unconfirmed reports that boston hospitals have admitted significantly more people than that. right now they say there were two devices that went off at the finish line of the marathon. there is a third incident. it's not clear yet if it was related which happened at the john f. kennedy library that's located about three miles away from the marathon site. >> ifill: scott, where were you when this happened? >> i was in the press room at the hotel which is kind of the staging area for the marathon. we heard two blasts. one was relatively loud. the other one was somewhat softer. at first didn't know what to make of them. then very quickly it beca
