scott wiener, of course, as well. for some time now, as mayor of the city, interim and elected, these two supervisors have been talking to me about the support we need to give to our small businesses. i know much of my leadership so far has been around our technology companies, and that is great. as you know, we were down even further on the unemployment rate, due in large part, to the hiring that our technology companies are giving us. we are at 7.6% unemployment, and that is fantastic, but we have always made a strong support to our local small businesses. that is why i have been working closely with the small business commission. i know the directors and commissioners here today, in concert with our supervisors, we wanted to announce, as jennifer indicated, a real enhancement. i would like to establish another $5 million in small- business loan programs. we need some immediate help. the very successful rebel and bond loan program and our office has been administering with working solutions for the past two years ha

scott wiener. we have two other supervisors who may be coming later. supervisor jane kim and supervisor mar farrell, who might join us later. we're all part of the initial group of policy makers at city hall who want to hear ideas and views of this new economy, this collaborative consumption economy, a shared economy, one that we are very interested in because it has assets that have already peaked our interest. about our -- piqued our interest. about our environment, about how to do less with more, how to make an expensive city more affordable to more people. how to utilize the strength of the city as a great tourist city that maybe not that affordable to too many people and how we can get more folks to come and experience the wonder of the city. and then hopefully they make their stake here. these panel members of decided to make their stake here. they risk reputation, may be small amounts of money, because of the had a lot of money, they may not have had to start this. but they have also, i think, done it for the right reasons. they want to experien

i think we will also year from supervisors got -- supervisor scott wiener. >> this turnout's shows how significant this is to the future of the city. we were with a smaller group earlier. i will stress that san francisco is a city with a dichotomy going on. in many ways, we are a cutting edge city in terms of technology, food, transportation, there are all sorts of things where we are ahead of the curve. we attract a lot of people like you who are forward-thinking and want to do things in a different and more innovative way. we're also a really old school city. the change is challenging. david and i talk about this a lot. we're trying to do things differently. we get a lot of reflexive push back, whether you are talking about cars sharing on streets, or changing zoning to create new housing to make the city more affordable and inclusive. you have those kinds of difficult conversations. so much of this is about educating the city as a whole from all generations and perspectives. our housing policies and transportation systems are not always sustainable. if we want to remain a cutting ed

i want to acknowledge our vice- chair, supervisor scott wiener, who is in the audience. we work with the mta, and our responsibilities are many, but it includes long-term transportation planning for the city and county, something that requires the agency worked very closely with the mta. we are also the body that oversees the transportation sales tax for the city and county of san francisco, and i am very proud we have a very strong working relationship with the mta. i want to work knowledge our new director of transportation, ed reiskin, who has hit the ground running and really brought in a new wins. the fact is that for so many of us, muni is what makes it possible for us to live in the city, allows us to get to and from work, allows our kids to get to and from school. even though there are some issues that people have with the system, i think we should be very proud of it. one of the things i want to thank the mayor about is that in the last few months, we have been focusing on the issue of how we make muni and public transit more accessible to families and children

[applause] front and center. well done. very happy 100th to muni. since its first days of operation on december 28, 1912, this unique public transportation system has attracted and intrigue and amazed and served people from the city and untold visitors from all around the world. at to was the first major publicly owned transportation system in the nation and today is the seventh largest, carrying more than 200 million people a year. muni was part of the rebuilding after the 1900 sixth earthquake and served as a dynamic catalyst as the city expanded over the sand dunes and down the peninsula. songs and movies often have featured muni. i don't know if you have heard this one -- ♪ to be where little cable cars ♪ [laughter] actually, tony bennett in town a couple of weeks ago to do that song. he did a wonderful job. muni is also a system constantly position to realize its position and

[applause] >> thank you. and the mayor takes it in stride. my constituents on the other end of the district. i am just beyond excited to be here today. i have watched this project over the years, and it has had its ups and downs, but at the we all knew all along that we would get it done. i want to step back and dig about this park. the mere mention did. it was not that long ago in this park had a lot of challenges. if you look at what has happened in duboce the park, look at the battle for renovation of the rec center. you look at the playground, the fields, and what has happened with having dogs and people without dogs coexist peacefully in this park, i wanted to acknowledgement predecessor over there, who played a big role in that. [applause] sydney, too. this is really just a model park for the city. another point want to make is that this is a great example of how things actually get done in the city. i cannot tell you how many times, and i am sure supervisor olague experiences the same thing, you get an e-mail saying we have a problem.

[applause] as someone who has only been in office a short while, it is amazing when you stop and think about how large manufacturing is growing here in this city, even in the difficult economic climate. manufacturers have started to grow inside san francisco. and we cannot say that about every type of business in san francisco. what is most unique about what we are doing out here in the city is that we are reusing and repurchasing old bake it spaces. we have invested in the neighborhood, and more importantly, we have hired a local san francisco talent that is critical to this day and age. i just wanted to mention s supervisor -- as supervisor scott wiener mentioned, i just want to let you know that we are the experts on youth priorities, and these are the things that the young people in san francisco care about. this takes it into consideration, and will forward to working with you guys. just as our share address that. in april, we had a budget hearing, -- just as our chair addressed that. in april, we had a budget hearing. we were looking at the proposals, and even though you guys are facing this $170 million in budget cuts, the $120 million, and $312 million the following fiscal year, it is really big cuts, but we hope that the needs of young people are among your priorities. we know that the board has supported young people through the free muni campaign, and supervisor avalos spoke to us, and we look forward to working with you guys at tomorrow's hearing and really just order collaboration. thank you. and i would like to introduce sarah armstrong to produce our priorities. -- our first priorities. >> as you can see, priority number one for us is free muni for low i

we're here with supervisors got scott wiener. he started his first term this january. we are going to get to know him and talk about the issues facing the city. welcome. thank you for joining us today. tell us about your background, where you grew up, went to school, and what kind of jobs to have had. >> i grew up in the philadelphia area, in new jersey. i went to school up and down the east coast. i went to undergrad at duke university. i went to law school at harvard. after clerking for a judge, i came out here in 1997. i have been here for the last 14 years. i have always lived in the castro. i am an attorney. i started out in private practice. i settle private law firm during complex commercial litigation. in 2002, and moved over to the sentences the city attorney's office where i worked on the trial team doing trials for the city, handling my own cases, and supervising a team of attorneys as well. >> why did you choose to live in san francisco? >> i always assumed i would go back to the philadelphia area since that is where my family is. i was always interested in
