yeomanry on the sea island, the ownership of land, the working conditions on the sea islands. a lot of people don't realize this, but the sea islands were a boom area after the civil war. good industries, good jobs, good wages, plus numerous pharmacy that were gained by the former slaves on to sea island. and what destroys them will be in many ways really greatly diminish this will be the depression in the 1920s where actually they'll go down to -- wages will drop to 20 cents a day. in the 1920s, the sea islands around port royal had a population of 40,000 people. by 1940, it's down to 20,000 because people have to leave the area to find new jobs and such. he set up a legacy in the sea islands which does last well into the 20th century, and then conditions, economic conditions will completely change the area. one of his greatest legacies, though will, be where i work on parris island. while he was a member of the south carolina legislature, he pushes for a naval station at port royal. when he becomes a u.s. congressman, he puts petitions before the u.s. congress for the establ

this is footage from mystic sea port museum. it includes scrubbing the deck in the morning, working on the sales, climbing aloft, whenever the duties designed, gun drill practice and by the end of the day you are ready forest. but you don't get eight hours sleep. it is four hours on, four hours off, so only four hours to rest in the hammock and you can take a look what it is like to live below stek on the constitution. all of the hammocks would be higher like this. we lowered some so some of our smaller visitors can climb into a hammock because there is nothing better after you are working hard than climbing into the hammock and being able to enjoy a few hours of rest before you are called back to duty. if are you a sailor on constitution, it is four hours of rest and back to work. the life of a sailor is not easy. it is not what we're used to these days. it is nice to have an opportunity to think about what was it like to be on board constitution to eat food that's been in barrels before it comes aboard the ship because 200 yea

it took 3 trips actually before we got to the sea. and all over at the edges of the dunes and sometimes even out in the middle of the dunes where you get into a deep hole, you will find a broken ceramic ojalla, you will find a sea shell that somebody carried in there, you will pick up the shell going what were you doing out here, why were you walking in this place, were you seeing it the same way i'm seeing it? were you floating like a ghost or were you trudging and swimming and dragging yourself? what were you doing out here? on the last trip out, we did a lot of night walking. and we walked barefoot for the most part because it's much easier than walking in boots and it's just nice to walk barefoot for days and days at a time. on that trip in particular there were a lot of sidewinders out in the dunes which made for an interesting element because the previous trip there had been snakes but not so many. you would wake up in the morning and there would be these elegant sidewinder tracks everywhere. the guy who dropped us off has the p

so the queen of the seas, britain, has lost to the americans. it was a real surprise in great britain. remember, they are focused on the napoleonic wars and fighting france. there's a world war that's really the focus of their attention but here on this shore our american navy is now proud. we've stood up for ourselves. the british focused a little more attention. they say you can't engage one of these american ships. they realize we build bigger, stronger ships than a typical frigate so they said you can't take on an american ship unless you have superior force, two-on-one, and there was a blockade on the atlantic coast. so much of the action of the war of 1812 moves inland to the lakes. that's not "constitution's" she's here on the coast, but eventually towards the end of the war, she does escape the blockade and meets the british one more time. this is a wonderful portrait of william bainbridge actually painted by sarah peele, one of the first female professional artists in our country, the daughter of charles wilson peele and there's a wonde
