we can see that the -- there is an outline of the british colonies along the seaboard and also an indication of roughly where the appalachian mountains lay, dividing coastal regions from the vast interior, entirely a native land really, where there were european traders, french for the most part in this region of the great lakes, for example, and the mississippi valley, but there were very, very few europeans. and we also see on this map the location of lake champlain, and can you see it as a corridor between the hudson river, which empties in new york, that is manhattan into the new york bay and atlantic, and its northern reaches through a river in in montreal. who would control this artery, that's very important for the determination of the conflict. we also talk about acadia or nova scotia, which is here, an important region. and next we'll begin with the ohio country because this is where the conflict began in 1784. pardon me, 1754. 1754, all right? okay. let's continue. well, historians use maps, you know, to get a sense of not only the relationship between geographic regions, and that'

there's other operations going on the eastern seaboard that are army, navy. but this is great one to study here. i just have a couple of notes here. novice armies coming together. fort donelson's kind of fun also to study because people are make big mistakes. they're making some basic mistakes. how to handle and distribute ammunition. veteran armies later in the war will not have to deal with because it's known. you have that kind of thing going on. supplies. command and control. tactics are all under -- big flux here at this period of the war. so why is fort donelson kind of forgotten? i mentioned before it bigger battles had come up after this campaign. shilo in particular happened six weeks after this. in fact, i imagine six weeks from now you're all going to be down at the shilo national battlefield park having a good time, too. so shilo certainly was a big one. and it's understandable with the number of casualties and such. but why even in their day, when you look at the official records or if you look at the books that are written shortly after the war,

travel wise, it looks like it will be on the eastern seaboard during the day today. farther west you go, the better the weather gets. scattered showers and thunderstorms. temperatures getting warmer though all across the country. mostly cloudy skies are forecast today. a few showers in the forecast. 55 to 60 the high. so the winds will be picking up this afternoon a little bit. on the open waters of the bay, gusts could be up to 20. so small craft advisories out. insta-weather futurecast shows rain chances into the eefpk hours. then things dry up. we may develop sun breaks, especially out west of us. it might stay cloudy through part of the night. during the day sunday, we look dry. by sunday evening, the second part of this comes in. sunday night, monday early, we could produce more showers. so the forecast, up and down, up and down. tapers off by late afternoon. it comes back into -- and then tuesday near 70 with a thunderstorm chance by the end of the day. >> john, thank you. a new meter reading program. the system will also detect water use which will pick up on

first and foremost, quiet day for much of the eastern seaboard.ttered showers there in parts of the outer banks, but also back in parts of the piedmont region. a few showers that are forming there. some snow still back out towards the west. especially in the sierra nevada, but the rockies too, could get on the snow action. some places could get well over a foot. great for the skiers and not so much for the drivers. especially onnive 70. might have a tough time going west of denver. on the other side, back to the planes, we have a big mix there. one side, a lot of human, and with it with the daytime heating, we could have strong storms. on the back half of that, very, very low humidity. the strong wind, you get a fire threat. a segment one at that. it could be kind of a messy day to say the very least. we'll watch it for you very carefully. across the ohio valley, it's going to feel like summer today. very muggy. temperatures in memphis and even places like cincinnati will be in the 80s. with the high humidity, wow. it's going feel much warmer. it'
