the snowstorm on the eastern seaboard is moving north, relieving atlanta hartsfield but causing majoroblems for airports in the northeast. according to flightaware.com, more than 4,000 flights have already been canceled for today nationwide. i just got off the phone with a duty manager here at sfo. he tells us there are almost 50 arrivals and departures that have already been canceled for today at sfo, flights traveling between raleigh and sfo, all the way up to boston and you compare that number to yesterday. yesterday there were 50 cancellations here at sfo, so the almost 50 that we're seeing today could increase because here we are, we're still only around 4:30 in the morning, because of the massive winter storm that started in the southeast, dumping snow, sleet in atlanta, as i mentioned, six inches of snow in charlotte, north carolina, which is very unusual for that part of the country, and of course, it's now going to be affecting flights especially in the philly, boston, washington, d.c., new york area. washington, d.c., by the way, right now, has mandated 50-minute delays at t

even into friday along the eastern seaboard. down towards the south, very mild and warm weather. you see towards the north cooler temperatures. that's what's fueling up this storm system. towards new york, a high of eight, up into the double digits. as that front does approach by friday into saturday. let's see what's going on over here towards eastern asia where high pressure is coming in. what that means is much fairer weather for many of you. a few flurries near coastal areas here across the pacific coast of japan, but nothing even remotely close to what we saw the last two weekends with the severe storm systems out here. still flurries towards western parts of hokkaido, actually about 30 centimeters. around sapporo could see into the higher elevations. for much of the rest of japan, korea, china, the big blue h is descending from the north. that means much sunnier skies. it's even going to start to pull in some warm air out of the south china sea and temperatures will be on the rise for the next several days. take a look at okinawa and naha getting up to 20 degrees, right at

yes, a huge winter storm is wreaking havoc all along the eastern seaboard after slamming into the south first hundreds of thousands of people lost power, tells the flights have been cancelled or delayed. rich edson live at reagan national airport with breaking news. rich: i continue to come to reagan national airport and they are not going anywhere. they have been closed since this morning. they're still trying to dig out the tax ways they hope at some point this afternoon they will allow some flights to take off. dallas airport 20 miles away from here has only one operational runway. nearly 6500 flights have been cancelled, and if you take a look at what else is going on here, pardon me for one second, flight status the entire region 616 cancelled out of charlotte, atlanta, philadelphia, hundreds of flights cancelled there. this is something that has been going on throughout the northeast and continues here, we don't know when we will get back in the air at washington national airport. the other problem is you have the issue of if they do open up the airport there aren't that many plan

already flights cancelled up and down the eastern seaboard mainly in the southeast.ta earlier, a major hub for delta airlines got hit by ice and snow. people trying to get out or get in just couldn't do it. they account for most of the cancellations across the country and we have a little chart we can show your graphic that has the latest totals from flightaware.com. almost 3500 flights cancelled today alone across the country. tomorrow they have three and we cancelled the 2900 flights and this week because of the storm mainly, 10,800 flights have been cancelled. at washington national airport. i look at the cruise and aircraft that are here, whether or not they will be able to move them to another location to prevent them from getting stuck in what could be eight to 10 inches of snow later on tonight. here is what one spokesperson described the problem as earlier. >> the airlines like to reposition their plans, keep it out of the heavy impact. we could end up with very few plans, very few passengers pre-canceling flights for tomorrow. the ideal option for passengers

eastern seaboard. we are expected to see a little bit more snow before the weekend is over. let's go a little bit closer in through the coast, we are fairly clear, one storm system has pushed out. this is what we are dealing with right now. some very clear skies across much of the metro areas. tomorrow we are going to be seeing temperatures not changing much today. in new york, low 30s, expected to stay about the same tomorrow. plenty of sunshine should be in the forecast, it's going to be warm he down here towards the south. here on sunday, 34° in new york city. and we think there's going to be snow coming in from the ohio river valley and that means across parts of pennsylvania, southern new york as well as in new york, about an inch of snow. some locations could be a little bit higher, maybe two, some just a little bit higher than that. we're going to be watching that carefully. central regions that is where most of the rain will be. eastern seaboard. for washington though high of 36 on saturday but

60 degree day today in sochi, blizzard watches were up as another major storm batters the eastern seaboard. nbc's ron mott has more from massachusetts. >> reporter: hey, there, lester, good evening to you, the blizzard warning is in effect for coastal massachusetts today. as you can see we have been pelted by strong winds which elevates the danger of widespread power outages and dangerous winds. with barely a 24-hour breather from the last storm, parts of new england are getting hit hard again. >> this will be the second major storm for parts of the east this weekend. >> reporter: as much as two feet are supposed to fall, dangerously strong winds could fall. it is highly unusual to get two of these storms to happen. tonight, wind gusts as high as hurricane force, snowfall rates as much as two to three inches an hour, and there could even be thunder snow. >> reporter: the massachusetts governor, duval patrick, warned people to stay off the roads. >> under these conditions it is really not possible to keep the roads clear and safe given the rate of snowfall. >> reporter: they have hospitals

very well can be seen here on the western seaboard. the biggest problem is the rainfall. we're seeing about 30 to 50 millimeters in the forecast on top of what's already been occurring. that's why the areas in the red, flood warnings in place. the orange still flood alerts. more rain will be coming through. snowfall farther off towards the north. really messy across western europe through the next several days. in the east, though, clear skies, and fairly decent weather in your forecast. here's the extended forecast. >>> sightseers in kyoto are getting their first look at a historic attraction. the way it was meant to look. workers have spent more than a year restoring the temple to its original colors. it is a unesco world heritage site and national treasure. it was built nearly 1,000 years ago. temple officials researched how it may have looked back then and commissioned workers to recreate it. a reconstruction team repainted the tiles and columns and gave the rooftop phoenixs a gleaming new coat. they spent six months applying 600 sheets of gold leaf to the bronze stat

if you have any travel plans along the eastern seaboards hopefully it doesn't affect it but by saturday looks like skies will be clear as far as flying. back towards the west in texas and oklahoma, that clear air is also ushering in dry, windy conditions. so, we do have these fire risk warnings in effect out here. temperature towards the south, though, rather warm and mild in southen over towards atlanta, even in washington, d.c. up to 14 degrees. north of that front, though, look at chicago, minus 1 only for your high. across eastern asia what we have been looking out here is absolutely beautiful weather really shaping up for the weekend, believe it or not. and northern portions of japan, we still do have some sea-effect snow, nothing too unusual. 30 centimeters in western parts of hokkaido. towards korea and china, high pressure is going to be smack right over top of you and that means some clearer skies. now unfortunately not everybody here sharing in that, though. parts of northeastern china around beijing, there has been haze advisories issued here because of the high caps, any pol

let's talk about that winter storm that is making it's way through the south and up the eastern seaboard. it's bringing rain, sleet, heavy snow and ice in, quote, historical proportions to a third of the country. that's according to the initial weather service. of concern is the ice and in some places it's snapping tree limbs and power lines. 200,000 customers in georgia, and another 100,000 in south carolina are without power tonight. flights have been canceled, and flights have experienced delays today. this is the third big weather system to disrupt large parts of the country that has brought weakened holiday sales to lower job problems. california, among the states experiencing a multi year drought that is now reaching it's own historic proportions. farms and cities are resorting to water rationing after a state of emergency was declared last month. the san francisco bay area has received only a quarter of the amount of rain that it normally receives. >>> and the mountains snowpacks are so low that they are not open for business this season. weather does take a toll on economy. at le
