pete williams following the latest of the investigation from washington and sean henry, formerly of the fbi and msnbc contributor in washington. ayman, first to you. >> reporter: i was just talking to captain james czarnecki who gave us a detailed account of what took place this morning and as the details come in we'll learn more in the coming hours. according to the police chief here, the call came at 12:30 this morning that an individual was sleeping in a vehicle outside of a bar. the bar was closed. the owner of the bar making his way to the bar noticed this individual sleeping in the doorway leading into the bar. police were called as they approached the individual and immediately recognized it was the person they were looking for. at that point they tried to wake him up. the individual pulled out a small handgun, we are told, and opened fire at one of the police officers and took off running to where the scene is now, where we are. it is about a block or so away. the police did pursue the suspect on foot according to the police chief. that's where the shootout took place. it does n

we've also got sean henry, former assistant director of the fbi. gentlemen, good morning. commissioner, you just left the job on friday. one presumes you're still pretty plugged in. you are talking about four different incidents. what's your sense of whether they are indeed connected and a potential terror attack on the city and this area? >> first, since 9/11, this is only the second successful attack. the first was the hatchet attack on a new york city police officer about two years ago. the device that blew up on saturday night that caused 29 injuries would have to be deemed a successful and i believe the use of the term "terrorist" is appropriate in this. i think we have enough information to clearly indicate it was an act of terrorism. good news is authorities have a lot to work with. these devices did not go off, and as a result they have the ability to move forward very quickly. i think you will see this come to resolution very quickly. >> as you left your post on friday, did your department have under surveillance an individual or individuals that you think they're

sean henry is the former assistant director of the fbi now president of crowd strike. good morning to both of you. sean, let me start with you. here we go, these undetonated devices create a wealth of opportunity and evidence for law enforcement. what do we know, what do you think about the sophistication of the devices and of the suspect or the bomber? >> that's right, matt. the fact that those devices weren't exploded is a treasure-trove for law enforcement. investigative leads. the fbi has a t-dak which is a multinational or multijurisdictional center, fbi, atf, department of defense, they looked at over 100,000 ied's over the last 12 years and collected a lot of signatures so they are able to look at the type of components that made up those devices, look at the triggering devices, also be able are finger precipitates, dna. i think the fact that they were able to identify rahami is quickly it was a key piece of evidence in the ability to look at this to put out this all point bulletin. >> look at the bigger picture for me, though, the fact there are four different f
