let's bring in julie manchester, reporter for "the hill," and sean sullivan for "the washington post." great to have you here this morning. >> thanks, dara. >> sean, you and your colleagues wrote about former allies like rebecca mercer, severing ties with steve bannon as a result of this book. i want to put back up president trump's tweet from last night, saying bannon cried like a baby when he was fired and begged for his job. sean, is this more about just bannon attacking president trump's children here? >> well, i think what this is, is the president trying to make it look like he is the one in control of the situation. you have, you know, his book, where you have aides, associates, people close to him, people who used to work for him portraying a situation that's very chaotic, critical of people around the president, and we've seen a pattern from this president of wanting to defend himself aggressively against those criticisms. oftentimes what he tries to do is go after the opposition and say, well, i'm the one in control of this situation. i think that's what he's trying to do he

john sullivan for the first question. sean: you guys in the democratic caucus have narrowed the republican advantage in the senate this week. it looks like there are some other interesting senate races. some retirements. we are less than a year for the midterms. will democrats win the majority back in the senate this november? sen. van hollen: so this was a great week for the senate. for alabama and for the country with the swearing in of doug jones, who ran a campaign based on kitchen table issues. i am not your negro am not going to make any predictions about global happen -- i will not make any predictions about what will happen. all i can say is the signs out there that she have an energized democratic base and a lot of independent voters who are crossing over to support democrats as they did with doug jones. and a lot of disaffected republicans. and i believe that the steps that the republicans and -- in congress have taken are going to make things a lot harder for those republicans, including the passage of this tax bill

joining me now, "washington post" congressional reporter sean sullivan, one of the reporters behind thatwashington post" headline. sean, good to see you. first, tell me more about what you learned regarding that warning to the president. i guess he was briefed at camp david, but just how dire was the warning? >> it was a pretty dire warning. there are three main factors right now that i think are really, really worrying republicans about the 2018 midterms. one is just history. the fact that a first midterm is usually not very good for a president who is just coming into office. the second thing is we're not s seeing candidates, republican candidates, enter these races. we're seeing retirements in the house. would be challengers in the senate say, you know, i think i'm going to pass. i'm going to wait this out. maybe run in the future. the third thing is the president's approval rating itself. he is not a popular figure right now. this warning that the president got at camp david was a pretty serious one that outlined, you know, the worst case scenario which could be a pretty big wipeout,

. >>> let's bring in deputy news editor and sean sullivan. good morning to you both. ladies first, start with you. is this shutdown mostly about politics and not policy in which party will tick a bigger political hit on this? does that hit have staying power for ten months to the mid terms? >> we can see it is about policy when you consider that democrats really drew a hard line on the daca deal. it had bipartisan support. lindsey graham voted against this. we see how trump and john kelly and steven miller are drawing conservative hard lines on immigration saying this is not part of this right now. there is a little bit of politics. we see that this morning when he is bringing up the mid term election. you mentioned the poll earlier. democrats who needed to vote yes on this voted yes on this. i don't think they will be to blame for this. >> if they haven't made any compromises to the point where a deal can be done what makes anyone believe that something will go down today? i had a couple of journalists in the last hour, one said a couple of weeks and the other said a

let's bring in usa "today" washington post support sean sullivan. sean i will start with you. any chance the president expected his comments would be made public or do you think he was relying on the privacy of the meeting? >> reporter: it's hard to say, traditional politicians have approached meetings with lawmakers as essentially a public forum. and they know these comments even made in a private setting might actually get out at some point. so they tend to be aisle what they say even behind closed doors this president obviously has a different style. it's hard to say whether he thought or knew this would get out. but it certainly is in line with his tendency to speak in a controversial way to talk off the cuff with lawmakers when he's negotiating with them. >> so based on that, are we now in an environment in that meeting who feel they have a responsibility to make comments like these public? >> you know, i think it really depends what had happened in that meeting. you saw senator dick durbin who have been a vocal advocate for a deal with the daca recipients. he was the fir
