when you break that down by race white children in seattle -- about 4% to 5% of white children in seattle are below the poverty rate. when we look at african-american children, the poverty rate goes up to 47%. that is a stark contrast and one that is not sustainable if we are to live up to our city's ideals of inclusion and equity. and so what does that mean for us as we enter this partnership this national forum work. well, it's a lot of work ahead of us. it's going to take a lot of resources, as other speakers before me have identified but there are also opportunities. so some of those opportunities are national in scope, in addition to the national forum, the city of seattle has pledged to the my brother's keeper, president obama's initiative, as well as to the cities united initiative. with respect to our seattle youth violence prevention program, one of the things that we are actually conducting right now as we speak is a xre mens sif community assessment of that program as well as other programs related to this issue. so our seattle youth violence prevention program is funded at abo

this is the port of seattle. thering it, an enormous drilling rig they're going to use in the arctic, it's tied up at the dock. there is a 100-yard exclusion zone put in place. no other vessels are supposed to go within 100 yards of the polar pioneer. walk this way, and we'll show you how close we are to the other side of this river water way. we're very close here. that limiting public access to public waters is part of what is at the base of legal action taken against the port of seattle. another big part of that league action is whether the port went through proper environmental review before approving the contract allowing a local marine services company to do a lot of work on the polar. pioneer before it heads north later this summer. >> they have to conduct environmental review any time they change the use of a shoreline. and they skip that process and negotiated the lease. >> the next step in these legal proceedings should take place in late july, when a hear something scheduled in superior court in king c

maintains in seattle wemany times in seattle we see a begin peaceful beginning and then it escalates later in the day. >> they don't have much chance of stopping the work, which is part of their intention. i spoke with a marine representative just a half hour ago, and he said, you know, we've had a lot of time to plan for this. there has been no secrets if they were going to stage this protest and try to block things up. so people have known about it for quite some time. i asked them if they just changed their work shifts to accommodate the work needed to get done and avoid the protests. they said they would not give details but they said there would be no impact so far. are these folks going to stop shell from drilling in the arctic? the company has spent $6 billion exploring the possibility and it's a good bet after that kind of investment and the amount of oil and natural gas they think they might find, that they're going to keep going. more than anything else it's a great photo operational op with a lot of people speaking their minds. >> adam, thank you very much. >>> there is re

matt with me here in san francisco and glenn with us from seattle. it or isn't a sign of a bubble? glenn: i think they got ahead of themselves with very long leases. sometimes you have companies that took too much space and have to sublease. other times, you have companies that signed up for space and they need more. both of those factors are driving activity and it comes from the fact landlords were able to get long leases against the very unpredictable part of the economy. emily: matt, you have been pounding the pavement. have seen spaces on the market. are you worried? matt: it is a healthy trend because it provides short-term opportunities for companies that should not be making 10 year lease commitments. emily: what if they cannot fill those leases? matt: that remains to be seen. it is extremely disruptive and expensive. a lot of companies are taking more space than athey need to accommodate future growth. right now, a lot of them are making money doing that. emily: glenn are these companies getting too ambitious or are these spaces in the near

erica wood has more on the protest from seattle.ning in protest against the polar pioneer, the first of a shell that royal dutch is planning to send to the arctic. the company has 13% of the world's undiscovered oil, and more of it is gas. shell has been pushing to drill up the coast of alaska for years. a week ago u.s. president obama gave his authorisation. there are smaller permits yet to be approved. it's expected they'll go through. president obama put a hold on oil exploration after deep water horizon spilt millions of barrels of oil into the gulf of mexico. the moratorium didn't last long. activists say approving drilling goes against slowing down exploration and the use of fossil fuels to reduce global warming. drilling has not been possible but because ice is melting since and rigs have a clearer path. shell hopes to have rigs in place by july. it's a risky operation. bad weather meant previous attempts in 2012 was poewes pointed. activists say an oil spill would be disastrous for a declining arctic. those promoting the oil

police in seattle are preparing for another night of unrest.say some demonstrators threw rocks and wrenches last night, injuring three officers. at least 16 arrests followed the protests. activists say they're calling attention to a number of issues, including what they highlight as police treatment of minorities. will carr right now is live in los angeles with more on this. hi will. >> reporter: hi. may day is typically where you see a lot of protests over immigration and labor issues, but yesterday we saw a number of anti-loot demonstrators and it didn't take long for things to go from peaceful demonstrations to violent. in seattle, there was dramatic moments caught on camera when one protester actually attacked a police officer on a bicycle while others hurled wrenches, rocks and burning objects at officers. forcing the seattle police department to fire pepper spray into the crowd. of the three officers hurt, one had a dislocated shoulder. another a broken wrist and one was burned. more than a dozen protesters, many wearing all black who had
