>> we were hitting -- we were hitting some pretty awful stuff right in secaucus, you know, right as we were getting towards elizabeth which is exit 13-a on the new jersey turnpike and then we got into secaucus and that's where the roads were completely covered in snow because the snow is coming down at rates of about 2 inches per hour, so even with the trucks out there plowing away the snow you just can't keep up with it and then it was windblown on top of that so there were drifts on the sides of the roads and you run into these patches and then on top of that our wipers keep -- the ice keeps freezing up on the wipers so you can't always see so it's the combination of the bad visibility and the road conditions, too, so northern new jersey is really when it started to get bad. >> i'm absolutely amazed we're having this conversation with you inside the lincoln tunnel and you've gone through the shallowest part and you're starting to emerge. this is pretty wild. >> right? >> i like this. this is amazing reporting. >> who would have thought you would want to tag along on a trim throu trip

we're live over secaucus, john del gorno, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> that's a mess. what about the rest of the commute? >> well, i can show awe map just so everybody can get an idea of where john is. so it's westbound 3 to the new jersey turnpike, you have that overturned vehicle with the debris spill. so westbound 495 ramp to route 3 is closed, and the ramp from route 3 west to the turnpike is also closed down. you go outbound at the lincoln tunnel, as john was saying. the inbound side of the lincoln tunnel is at least a 45-minute delay. we can look at a camera and show you, again, as that traffic is exiting, you can see off on the right side of your screen, that's where all that activity is. so really only one or two lanes are going to get you to the turnpike and then from there you have to figure out a way to get up to route 3. i mean, there aren't really many options there. >> no. it's meadowlons. >> a lot of people could head up to the george washington bridge or the holland. >> wow! good luck. i'm sure that will clog up soon. >>reporter: exactly >> thank you, h

we started off in washington, d.c., at 7:30 this morning and we are just outside of secaucus, new jerseyrnpike approaching new york city. we're really hoping that our press plates get us through the tunnel, you know, we having press plates does allow us to be on the roads because the service we are offering people is showing you what the condition are like outside so nobody thinks that it's okay to go outside. so, the roads are very much snow covered. the turnpike it's been in and out, but the last, i'd say, 20 miles has been pretty miserable because the snow is coming down at a pretty good rate as this storm continues to intensify and we're seeing those snowfall rates of about 2 inches per hour so we are getting closer to the lincoln tunnel into the city and once we get into the city we expect not many other people on the roads because the travel ban is now in effect started at 2:30 and now it's time for everyone to be off the roads and just stay indoors and stay safe, so we'll see what happens as we get closer. we're still a little bit aways but we've got some pretty miserable conditio
