food banks nationwide, all of this ahead of thanksgiving. leslie joins us now, ceo of is second harvest food bank in silicon valley. of all, how many more people are you serving this year compared to last year? >> well, we're actually serving twice as many people. we're serving a half million people every single month. people think of silicon valley as a place of tremendous wealth. but even before the pandemic, we had a food insecurity crisis here. i think what the pandemic has revealed is just how many people across the country were really living paycheck to paycheck and often with very little savings. as soon as shelter in place hit, we saw this immediate e and dramatic increase in need. arthel: can you keep up with the demand? >> well, i tell you, it's been a challenge. we are literally providing twice as much food, serving twice the number of people, and we're also doing it really differently, you know? you see these pictures from food banks around the country distributing food at drive-throughs. before the pandemic, most of our growsly distribution was kind of farmers' market where people could walk up and sele

every one and one of the effects that more and more people are seeing is food insecurity but one south bay food bank is doing what it can to help out the second harvest of silicon valley like other food banks in the bay area is tackling problem by providing free boxes of food to those in need. now the number of people suffering from food insecurity will actually shock you according to the organization organization ceo leslie botch own the second harvest food bank has been helping out an average of 500,000 people every month half a million people every month. that's double the number served before the pandemic and while people typically associate silicon valley with money there are many that are struggling financially especially during this pandemic. >>the biggest so i can value is a place of such tremendous well and at the same time there 70 people that are really struggling that were struggling before the pandemic really living paycheck to paycheck without a lot of babies and then what we see now is so many people especially in the service industry so many people who are low wage workers now either losing their jobs. they're having their hours dramatically cut back a
