we want to bring in cnn's selena wang, who is joining us live from tokyo. selena, just extraordinary pictures and i can imagine the rescue mission has started. >> reporter: exactly, paula. very devastating videos posted on social media. officials say firefighters are conducting their search and rescue mission. at least 20 people are missing after this mudslide swept across atami city in shizuoka prefecture. this is more than 50 miles southwest of tokyo. if you take a look at that video, you can see the destruction of homes. a huge amount of debris. infrastructure being engulfed in this mudslide. shocked people, bystanders, a lot of shock on social media as well. again, evacuation orders have been issued. the search and rescue mission is under way. no deaths have been reported yet. the shizuoka prefectural officials are also asking for support from japan's self-defense forces. and right now, paula, we are in the middle of japan's annual rainy season. it often causes floods and landslides. in fact, in 2018, more than 200 people died from devastating floods. r

selena, let's start with you. what are people saying about the olympics going forward despite covid cases rising across japan? >> reporter: well, poppy, there was a large crowd of protesters outside of the national stadium for hours were chanting to cancel the olympics. we also saw this big drone light display and fireworks but overshadowing that is this feeling of frustration that the games are still being held as covid cases are surging. tokyo is in a state of emergency and just around 20% of the population is fully vaccinated. i've attended several of the protests leading up to these games and they really feel that these games are putting money, sports and politics ahead of people's lives. i spoke to several bystanders who have mixed feelings. some hoped it would be a success and excited to watch the games on tv and standing outside of the national stadium to get as close to the action as they could, but others said this isn't the right time to have a celebration and that these games should postponed again. we

i want to bring back selena ling right now. do you know what is going on in chinese markets right now? it seemed like everything was stable until the 100th anniversary, and now things are heading south. >> if you look at the macroeconomic data, i think there's a lot of expectations there will be some deceleration, so i think things are fairly stable, but markets are going to refocus on the differentials and in terms of the whole covid situation within asia itself. if you look at pricing, pmi numbers that just came out, there is a little bit of softening. it does not mean that we are -- [indiscernible] but some paring back of the early optimism we saw in the first half of this year. i think going forward in the second half of the year, a lot of the effects will wear itself out. i think china in terms of vaccination pace has really picked up, so they are relatively well positioned within asia itself. looking forward, i think we still see china on track to coming close to around 9%, but there are other challenges. for near term, i
