selina: this is "bloomberg technology." i'm selina wang in san francisco in for emily chang.h,, casco, the -- claire mccaskill, the democratic senator from missouri confirm she was targeted by cyber attacks. on tuesday, democratic senator bill nelson reaffirmed his russians have infiltrated the election systems of certain counties. a democrat running in california's june primary was the target of cyber attacks. they are being investigated why the fbi. to continue a look at just how vulnerable american election systems are ahead of the 2018 midterms, i'd like to welcome major general earl matthews -- he served three decades in the air force, where he directed cyber investigations across the globe. and at the white house, cybersecurity reporter stephen yen. general earl matthews, i want to start with you. in addition to these escalating numbers of cyber attacks we're hearing about, and 11-year-old was able to hack into a simulation of the florida state election website in under 10 minutes. what does that say about the security of our election right now? gen. matthews: well, one

a, -- selina,linea walk us through this. selina: twitter has not been clear on what he has violated, but he post the link to a video that directly incited violence against the media. now, twitter is doing this big 360 reversal after last week were said he had not violated any policies yet. they said we will take action when he does. so, the team decided they needed to take action. you heard from the short clip that jack seemed to say he was in this temporary timeout. the hope is that these types of things will convince people to change their behavior. there has been an outpouring of tweets after that interview clip came out about people saying there is no way alex jones is going to change his behavior as a result of this seven-day ban, which is not a true ban. he is still able to access --ets and send it directs direct messages. we will see what company which wants to be in the future after this. it has been very clear about wanting rules and to stick to them, but the bigger question is, are they sacrificing values , and pot

give us the highlights, selina, of this interview. some of the broad, high-level issues he discussed was, a, twitter is a platform with outside influence, but we don't have that many resources to deal with this problem. something i thought that was interesting was, he said we don't proactively look at content. we wait for them to be flagged. in the case of alex jones, reasons why we didn't take action early was because it hadn't been flagged to us. once it was, then we took action. that leads to a whole series of criticism. emily: that's not what facebook does, right? facebook has an appeals process. they have thousands of content moderators, right? selina: facebook and youtube have the resources to have thousands upon thousands of moderators. jack made clear in the interview that we don't have those resources. you can criticize us for that, but we don't have another ption. that being said, i did talk to some critics who said they find it very hard to believe that, in the whole interim period in which this has been a subject of debate
