>> cnn's selina wang joins us.e at the funeral home in beijing, what did they say? >> so anderson, there was a really heavy security presence. all these conversations were off camera. i did have one lengthy conversation with a man who told me his brother tested positive for covid. and he believes his brother passed away because of covid. but the hospital cast categorized his death as a different disease. this man also said that he thinks many people in china know that many more people are dying and the extremely low numbers the government especially reporting. the country did recently narrow its definition of what they consider to be a covid death. and the world health organization has accused china for under-reporting this outbreak. >> i mean, is the outbreak still expected to get worse before it gets better? >> so in major cities like here in beijing, experts are saying it is likely covid infections have already peaked. but we are currently in this travel rush period ahead of the lunar new year holiday. this is w

selina wang has the story and the exclusive images. >> reporter: covid lockdowns may be overin china,lming hospitals across the country, the struggle to get help. patients crammed into every available space, every hallway and corner of this northern chinese hospital. not everyone survives the struggle. rows of bodies filled this funeral home storage room in downing province, though we don't know how many died of covid. families in mourning clothes flood the gate. families line up outside right next to coffin, waiting to cremate their loved ones. china has only fshlly reported a few dozen covid deaths since reopening. these images taken in late dez and early january show crowds and long lines of cars waiting outside funeral homes in six chinese cities. a brand-new parking lot was even constructed. we visited that funeral home. rows of cars were already there. i'm now standing in that new parking lot of this beijing funeral home. this entire parking lot area did not exist a month ago. and as you can see, the roads are not paved. one vagus n pulls in, unloads a body, and another follows.

selina wang has more. >> reporter: i'm selina wang in beijing.show crowds at crematoriums and funeral homes as covid cases explode across the country. images taken in late december and early january and reviewed by cnn show lines of cars waiting outside of funeral homes in six chinese cities. images appear to show that funeral home in the outskirts has even instructed a brand parking area. this confirms what i've seen and it is consistent with chinese social media footage that shows overflowing funeral homes. when i visited crematoriums last month, i saw a long line of cars waiting to get in and yellow body bags piling up in metal crates and workers loading more in. i spoke to families who told me they were waiting for days to cremate their loved ones. all of this suggests that china's covid death toll is far higher than the government's touting of only 37 since december 7th. a strikingly low number. the world health organization and u.s. have accused china of underrepresenting the severity of its current outbreak. >> selina wang, thank you. >>>

selina wang visited a rural area to learn more about the covid situation on the ground.s the only time they could see their children but as reported, government officials on the ground had other plans. selina wang is live in beijing with more. hello to you. why were you followed by chinese officials? >> reporter: so for some context in china it's not unusual for local officials in smaller places to check on foreign journalists and try to keep tabs on you. what was surprising was the resources they put into following us. at times we could see half a dozen officials tailing us. several booked same rooms in our hotel. other times they actually obstructed our reporting. >> so we have the three government minders following us. >> it's common for local officials to keep a close eye on foreign journalists but they were especially persistent in this village following our every move. so we drive out of the village to visit a public hospital in a neighboring county about two hours away. hoping these government minders won't follow us so people will speak more freely. we walk insid

our selina wang wanted to see what was happening hundreds of miles away from those lockdowns and protestshis is how people celebrate the lunar new year in this village. [crowd chanting] >> this year celebration is particularly special. the adults around this table all work in factories in the cities. this is the only time when many of them can see their children. the man next to me says, we've got to go wherever we can make money, and china's zero covid policy over the last three years has made it all even harder. he says the policy prevented them from going home but. now that the country is open, they can all be together. we came to this place in china 's southern province to see how part of rural china is celebrating the lunar new year without any pandemic restrictions. we visited villagers's homes. >> this woman greets us with a treat and alcohol, both made from rice from the paddy fields nearby. drinking is a big part of celebrating here. about 1000 people live in this village. and for hundreds of years, they have lived in these traditional wooden houses and you can hear the chickens

. >> selina wang joins us now from beijing.ases? >> well anderson, the message from the central government's look, everything is under control. that's your covid was a success and things are still going well. so it is no surprise that state media is ignoring pictures of crowded crematoriums, overflowing hospitals but meanwhile you've got the world health organization in the u.s. accusing china of under representing the severity of the outbreak now. beijing has stopped providing nationwide data on covid infections but some provinces are sharing no numbers. the provincial government of whom said that about 89% of its residents have been infected since last friday. this is china's most populous province, we are talking about a population of more than 98 million people. local officials though they're did not disclose the death toll. covid death numbers are sensitive topic because a high death toll, anderson, would directly challenge the yearlong narrative that china's covid approach is superior to the west and specifically superior
