within the first month of its operation in 2018, the foundation expects sentinel, as it is called to discover more asteroids than earth-based telescopes have over the past 30 years. nasa has reportedly found most of the big asteroids that could wipe out mankind, but the smaller ones that could take out cities or regions, we only know about 1% of those. the goal for sentinel is to find those, and if we have several years warning scientists believe we could deflected any earth-bound rocks away from us. the bottom line, they don't want us to be blind-sided like we were yesterday when a large ten-ton meteor barrelled across the sky in siberia, traveling 59 more than 30,000 miles per hour, creating a shockwave that blew out windows and knocked down part of a factory. more than 1,000 people were injured. also yesterday, a 150-foot asteroid gave earth a close shave, passing 17,000 miles above the planet's surface. what's unnerve being that one, astronomers discovered it last year, too late do us any good if it was going to hit us. the asteroid gods treated the bay area to an amazing light s

this is the sentinel space telescope. >> that's basically the size of it there? >> yeah, the real one is about the size of say a delivery truck, so it's about 23, 24 feet tall, and about 2,600 pounds. >> it's got its back to the moon? >> back to the sun. >> back to the sun and constantly surveying everything around it. >> exactly. as you know it's hard to look with a telescope in the direction of the sun. the nighttime sky is in the opposite direction of the sun. the challenging thing about the sentinel mission is that it's going to be quite far away from earth. it will orbit the sun so that means its distance will vary from the earth but it will range between 30 million miles at its closest to 170 million miles away from earth at its furthest. that's about 500,000 times further from earth than the hubble space telescope. we have challenges but we can send probes to mars, we can do this too. >> we can see anything that might possibly be a threat to the earth? >> that is exactly right. this is what the sky looks like in infrared which is basically heat. asteroids

here's a look at sentinel radar. you can see the little changeover pushing farther down to the south. this is coming right down into montgomery county, perhaps inside the beltway, too we'll see big flakes mixing in and more snow up to the north. there may be grassy accumulation north of 70 as this has been pretty much snow the last couple hours and coming through the northern sections our northern county around the mason dixon line. this all breaks apart. the front is coming in, initial cold front. there's snow shaws behind it but nothing we need to worry about. we worry about this next storm for tomorrow. for a while it fell off the models and we thought it was gone. it came back thursday, friday. so it's getting stronger tomorrow evening. it's far enough offshore just about every model is saying this now, this is going to be far enough offshore that the snow will be limited to the extreme eastern section. this is delmarva here and right up the jersey shore they may pick up a couple inches up there, maybe 3. in plac

let's get a closer look as we go to our sentinel radar here. this system is moving out of kentucky and tennessee. it has been able to drop a small amount of snow. as it gets closer to our area, i think it will break out in the western suburbs about 4 a.m. and be a quick hitter. i think it's probably over about 8:00 or so, maybe 9:00 over on the eastern shore. here's my concern. we had a lot of heavy rain yesterday, a lot of the road salts washed away. so there may be some delays and maybe even some slipperiness as this very quick burst of snow comes through. there's a lot of dry air, so it will have to overcome that. i think it will be a life fluffy snow and probably will stick. i'm expecting light snow for the morning commute. i expect it to begin before the sun comes up with only minor accumulations, maybe a coating to an inch likely sticking on grass and sidewalks, maybe some of the roadways. it should be gone by midmorning, but then we're back with that blustery cold weather. winds will gust potentially 35, 40 miles an hour. i'll be getting

let's go to sentinel radar.of this is green even though i've gotten a few reports around leesburg there was some snow, out along 81 some snow and this is all moving west to east at a pretty good clip. there's snow now farther north, but you have to really go up to the north, northern montgomery county up into carroll county. that's where we're seeing snow now. the bigger picture, you can see there's an end to this, a little light snow farther to the west and way out in texas and dropping down into oklahoma, that is the storm that potentially develops for tomorrow that may bring us a little bit more snow, lot of cold air in place tomorrow and tomorrow afternoon. as we head into tomorrow evening, we watch the track of the low and it is becoming -- well, i'm becoming pretty confident now this low is moving more out to sea and so that means little or no snow for the metro for tomorrow, more details. i'll explain a little further coming up in the full forecast. >> you can track the weather 24/7 with the fox 5 weather

we'll show it to you on sentinel radar. this will look a lot more dramatic. it's a combination of multiple radars. the back edge is east of d.c. that will not make it across the mountains. the system had a little trailing moisture down into the deep south, but that's not holding up either. tomorrow night there might be a little one coming by but not impressive losing the term very loosely as this one, but frostburg got 5 inches of snow out of it. cumberland, maryland 3 inches, bayard, west virginia just under .1-inch of snow. those are areas that do have winter weather advisories because there might be a small accumulation on grassy surfaces, maybe untreated roads, but out in the mountains is where the snow stuck to things and where the cold air resides. we'll see a trend change this week to a warmer trend. the cold air that has allowed multiple weak waves of low pressure or clippers to come through will be ending, maybe one more and then we'll watch some of the mild air that's been residing to the south and into the west start spreading this direction. so we
