speculation he was seriously ill or even dead well joining me now is correspondent frank smith in seoul frank how reliable is this information coming from the state news agency reporting that kim jong un is alive and well. well 'd i think the information reporting that he's alive and well coming from north korea's state media is a lot more reliable than the information that we received over the past couple of weeks that that he had undergone some surgery which may be true but that he was gravely ill or in fact in a vegetative state as some media outlets suggested or even brain dead i think there's a couple of giveaways there number one in the photograph of kim jong il and number 2 in the background is his sister and potential heir cumulate jong who is the vice director of north korea's propaganda and agitation department i think it would be a horrible mistake for north korea to suggest that kim jong un when it was alive when in fact he was dead so 'd i think this is really a reliable report from north korea saying and showing that kim jong un is alive when i'd like to talk about that sister y

correspondent frank smyth joins me now from seoul frank we've just seen that new video from the state news agency appearing to show kim jong un alive and well does it in fact settle the speculation over the latest health. well i think it may in fact settle that that concern about kim jong un's health those images are from korea central news agency north korea's state media in the background you see kim jong. junk that's kim jong un's sister she's the vice director of the propaganda and education department in north korea and i would just be kind of too far fetched to consider that they were trying to lie to the north korean people about the state of 'd the leader of health and this really is remarkable because here in south korea just yesterday you had a south korean lawmaker a north korean defector that's a south korean lawmaker say that he was 99 percent sure that kim jong un was dead so this really goes to show you the opaque nature of media coming out of north korea and definitely why was there a list of a his health and even death for the past week aside. well i think when you lo

following the story for us is correspondent frank smith in seoul frank can you give us the latest on this border shooting. well as you mentioned according to south korea's joint chiefs of staff at 741 this morning north korea fired what are believed to be 4 shots to a south korean guard post and share one county that's along the d.m.z. border between north and south korea south korea also immediately broadcast a warning to north korea that they cease this firing and responded with 2 separate volleys of several shots on their own this violates according to the joint chiefs of staff a comprehensive military agreement that the 2 koreas signed back in 2018. now as you know the border between these 22 countries is the world's most heavily fortified should we be worried about an escalation that's correct we do need to remember the d.m.z. is anything but that it is an unmanned sort of buffer zone between the 2 koreas but on either side of that is an extraordinary amount of fencing within it there are a lot of land mines and there are $2000000.00 troops faced off against each other in north

joining me now is correspondent frank smith in seoul hello frank how reliable easiest information coming from the state news agency showing kim jong moon alive and well well i'd have to say that korea central news agency is much more reliable vote the reporting of kim jong un in the north korean elite then you know the websites that were suggesting he was in a way vegetative state or or perhaps even dead over the past week or so the photographs that were shown particularly a photograph of him with his sister in the background indicate that that kim jong un is in fact alive so all indications dead easy in fact. alive but or are north korea watchers able to actually authenticate that these are in fact recent pictures of the north korean leader well that's a good point you know i mean we need to perhaps maybe see some pictures of him some video of him for you know real true definitive proof of his status but looking at some of the other pictures i think there were indications that this was a recent event there was a photograph of the thousands of people that that you mentioned releasing bal

well for more let's bring in journalist frank smith in seoul frank why are authorities so concerned about these flare ups because the infection numbers relative to population don't seem very high. yes they are pretty low relative to the population but we need to remember the previous outbreaks that took place here in south korea early in the coronavirus history in the city of daegu it was just one person attending several church services that spread the virus to what became really thousands and then recently here in the south korean capital in the entertainment of e.t.a. one you had one person now that's infected more than 250 with this recent outbreak in which on that's just outside of the capital at a logistics center you have now you know i think it's more than 200 people that have been infected and so it's it's really kind of spreading and it gets more difficult the more people that are involved to perform the kind of contact tracing in testing that can help contain such a cluster outbreak ok so what is the government there doing to contain this latest outbreak well it's doing that co
