septa engineers and electrical workers went on strike.have been shut down indefinitely for 60,000 passengers who take trains to newark, trenton and the airport. the buses and subways are still operating they service 85% of septa's customers. they posted an interruption plan online. the next step is for governor corbett to step in maybe to ask president obama to point an emergency board to mediate. the stand still has been part of a long-standing wage dispute. the unions have been pushing for binding arbitration, septa has refused saying they feel they can get a better deal in negotiations. >> we have friends and family in this community we're from this community we did not want this to result in a stoppage. work. which is why we have repeatedly offered to settle the dispute in a binding manner. >> we have 7400 unionized employees, and 7,000 have accepted what we're offering. there's nothing more than we can do. >> now, septa says that the unions demands are completely out of line with the wageses they are playing. 7,000 other employees th

"eyewitness news" reporter steve patterson is live at the powelton rail yard with more details on the strike, good morning. >> good morning, story about numbers, if you look at the numbers, 06,000 riders per day take those 13 regional rail lines, which as you mentioned are not shutdown -- are now shutdown after septa and the union could not come to agreement. further numbers, 450 workers those are engineers electricians, with two unions, now walk being off the job. they are fighting for what you might expect, wage increases contribution fos healthcare, for those septa workers. it is not everybody though, it is important to say the strike does not include other methods of transportation with septa, buses subways trolleys, all every those are still on. in fact, septa officials say they're adding additional transportation as part of

we're on market street where septa trains run underneath and septa business run on top of, and both, they are still running somehow, because we just have a temporary fiction saturday to this problem. and trying to follow septa and all of those different unions and strike possibilities is real confusing these days. earlier this spring our viewers will note there was a threat of the strike by all of the city bus trolley and subway staff. they have decided to keep working and hopefully keep talking, the suburban trained staff doesn't have the freedom that the city staff does because they have fallen under the federal railway act which essentially gives the power to the president to order them back to work. so, we could have an entire shut down of the entire septa system, come february, and when this eight month cooling off period ends, and as city staff doesn't have a contract by then they can all join together. imagine blue color workers in the city without a contract for five years decide to go join in. we have no septa running, in streets being snowplowed and trash being picked up. h

you checked on the contract for other septa workers. where do they stand right now? >> the main contract is expired. i looked into septa's contract today with the union that represents bus, trolley and subway operators. that expired three months ago. >> reporter: the transportation workers union represents the largest number of unionized septa employees, about 5,000 bus, subway and trolley operators, as well as maintenance personnel. those members are now without a contract. it expired in march. >> unfortunately, that means that any time they could decide to walk out. we hope they don't. we hope they continue negotiating with us. that is also something that's looming out there. >> would you have to take days off work if there were no buses? >> yeah. yeah. it would be a mess. >> reporter: if that happens, the federal government would not be able to intervene like they did to end this weekend's strike to get regional rails back up and running. in that case, negotiations are still ongoing. >> five years without a contract. i haven't gotten a raise. >> mark burns was on
