sergey lavrov is on its way to vienna, where world powers are locked in talks with iran. they are trying to timize a deal friday morning so they are ready to be presented to congress. diplomatic editor james bays is there. signs are that a deal may be close. >> i think we are edging slowly perhaps, towards a deal. i want to be cautious here but the delegations are meeting in a luxury hotel behind me and there's a sense of guarded optimism, i think. it had its ups and downs through the whole process, and through this final stage of the process taking place here in vienna. let me tell you the few optimistic signs that people are pointing to. first is the fact that president obama had a conference call with his negotiating team who are here in vienna. and it's worth reminding you that when we had the interim deal in lausanne that was preceded a few days before with a conference call with president obama and the negotiators running through a final strategy and points of the proposed deal. i think that is important, number one. also some of the comments that people are making

the russian foreign minister sergei lavrov returned to his own hotel a short time ago. are we going to get a deal today. his reply was not not particularly optimistic. he said there is always a chance. the u.s. secretary of state sat down with iranian counterpart and with the european union high representative they met for 50 minutes. the only read out we got from that meeting was when. >> is there a chance of a deal today, high representative? >> are you making progress. >> i admire your tenacity, james bays. what happens if there is no deal. >> i think that's the very big question. first thing to remember is that the interim deal, that's been extend sod many times since it was done in november 2013, it's been extended three times here in geneva, but that runs out in just a few hours' time. if we don't get a deal in the next few hours they're going to have to have an extension on that deal. but how long can these foreign ministers stay here? you've got seven of the most important ministers in the world all in vienna, many of them have been here many times. two of them,

diplomats say there is momentum towards a final deal and russia's foreign minister sergey lavrov was asked to fly back to weigh in along with the british foreign secretary, also expected back at the talks. joining us this morning is ali velshi. you just returned from several weeks in tehran, right? >> yeah, yeah. >> if this deal goes through today, what happens next. >> while i was there, i was hearing from iranian press that there was a deal imminent, it was drafted and almost ready and it didn't end up turning out to be true, but we are hearing from different sources. the two biggest issues is that it's got to get a sign off in iran. one would assume that the iranian would not be making a deal without the approval of the president and supreme leader. here in the united states, it's a 60 day approval period. the deal will probably get voted down in congress, and then president obama has to veto it, and it's got to be veto-proof. that's what's going to happen and then the sanctions start to get lifted. iran's nuclear program is frozen as we speak. if they don't get a deal by today, i
