abc 7 report er sergio quintana is there live. >> reporter: this demonstration is planned to begin around 5:00 here at the entrance to the uc berkeley campus. i can see right over there are already some businesses that would be late this saturday evening. instead, they're closing down early, some even boarded up their windows. the manager at one of these businesses tells me they first learned about this planned demonstration earlier in the week. this wednesday. that's when someone of the local business association members began talking about shutting down early tonight and even contacting contractors to board up some of these windows just as a precaution. it is not just the businesses preparing. some newspaper vending machines have even been removed just to make sure they don't get tossed through a window. i talked with one street vendor who also packed up and left because he's just not sure what is going to happen in this demonstration. >> in the old days, it used to be fun to watch mario and the people in the '60s, you know, saying stuff. but now breaking things and fires and people get

abc 7 reporter sergio quintana has more. >> reporter: right now i am a little bit away from the demonstrators. as you mentioned there was some violence that did break out here for a moment. let me tell you that on the onset the demonstrators said they wanted to keep it a peaceful protest. and they made efforts to do that. but as demonstrators made their way through berkeley they also came over to a radio shack that is at shaddock and dwight. there were some people in this group that decided they wanted to break out the windows in the business. they were successful in doing that. we, however, did watch as one of the demonstrators tried to stand between the windows and the person who was trying to bust them out. he got hit in the face with a hammer. we saw him being taken to the side and being taken care of by medics who were in the demonstration group. we also watched as somebody in a hood jumped into the radio shack and tried to show merchandise out the door. and we watched as the people tried to put the merchandise in the store. i'm still here as there are police from berkeley pd. they have

let's begin with abc 7 reporter sergio quintana. >> reporter: this all started at san francisco at market and castro. police stole that newspaper delivery truck at about 3:40 this morning this is a high speed chase with the stolen truck veering off the road near railroad tracks, speeding through stop signs on city streets and maneuvering past vehicles on the freeway. at one point, the passenger seemed to be smoking as he watched traffic whiz by. this all started early this morning. san francisco police say two men stole the san francisco chronicle truck. the driver was not harmed. >> at castro and market early in the morning making a delivery, at that time the suspects basically jumped into the van and took off. >> reporter: just before 9:00, san francisco police chased the stolen truck all the way down to the san mateo bridge and that's where california highway patrol took over on the 880 freeway. you can see as he veers through traffic, nearly clipping this vehicle. in hayward the driver swerves into the oncoming traffic lanes. in san leandro as he's surrounded by police the driver reve

. >>> continuing the team coverage, abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana live in emeryville with a look at conditions there in the east bay. >> reporter: well, the rains this morning caused those big issues for those commuters in the east bay because freeway traffic basically slowed to a crawl in part because of that flooding. in the city, some reports, the commute from the east bay into downtown san francisco lasted more than an hour and a half. the steady rains made for a slow and soggy commute. east bay traffic heading into san francisco was backed up for most of the day, causing significant delays. in berkeley, some storm drains were overwhelmed by the combination of leaves and rain causing them to back up. power did go out for an hour and a half in the area around fourth street and delaware in berkeley. but the staff over at betty's diner jumped into action to make sure people who needed to warm up from the rain had some place to go. >> we have all these lamps and we have all these power supplies and so we stay open and we end up feeding the street. >> reporter: even with no power,
