sergio quintana spoke with the man who helped the victim. >> it was a dime or nickel-sized wound righton his hip. >> reporter: brian lives near the scene of the laptop theft turned violent this time at an oakland bus stop and he heard the gunshot and grabbed his paramedic bag and splitted to help the man. the victim was on the phone with the 911 dispatcher describing what happened. >> someone had come up in a mask and asked for his laptop and he said he was on his laptop and somebody asked for it and i think he said he refused and the guy shot him. >> reporter: the 21-year-old victim is expected to be okay. this laptop robbery at gunpoint comes more than a week since oakland resident shuo zeng was killed when robbers stole his laptop in the montclair neighborhood. zeng was killed when he chased after the alleged robbers and was hit by the getaway car. two men have been arrested in that case. dan kalb wants to see more police on the streets to stop violent street crime. >> we have a vacancy rate twice as much as what it should be at opd and the only way to fill vacancies is more police

nbc bay area's sergio quintana joins us in san carlos. sergio, a scary situation for those church members for sure. >> reporter: yeah. san mateo county sheriff's deputies say paul michaelson hand delivered several notes to the church here over the last week. so when church members were looking at security camera video, they were surprised that they saw someone they recognized. outside holy trinity lutheran church tonight, san mateo county sheriff's patrol cars, members and neighbors say they're concerned for their safety. >> everybody's scared. they don't want their kids to come. my friend's daughter, she's supposed to light the candles this weekend. she's like, no, i'm not even going to participate in that. >> reporter: detectives say 79-year-old paul michaelson sent several disturbing letters to the church threatening to shoot members of the congregation where he's a former member. he's also a current outreach pastor at the nearby hope evangelical church in san mateo. >> we are saddened and we are in shock about what has happened. and we

nbc bay area's sergio quintana joins us from lincoln avenue there in willow glen where several businesses have been recently burglarized. sergio? >> reporter: yeah, you did see that this jewelry store was hit this weekend. they still haven't even been able to replace the front window on this door. there are residents and business owners who say they are concerned that their neighborhood is being targeted by criminals. at gold star jewelers, star explains to me how the burglar who hit their shop broke the side panel of the jewelry case and snatched a large spring of pearls. they have video of the break-in that catch the culprit. jerry has a different business in the neighborhood and is a big believer in security cameras. >> these cameras are not dummies. >> reporter: during tonight's meeting with san jose police chief eddie garcia at the willow against community center, he and his team briefed residents on the department's efforts to crack down on this recent spike in crime. one thing they're doing is encouraging businesses to install cameras outas weside as as inside their cars. >> did th

[ screaming ] here's the video that was posted to ring's social media site neighbors. we blurred the victim's face to protect her identity. homeowners association president karen drainy says the video shows the woman was caught by surprise. >> she saw someone walking toward her, thought it was a friend of one of her neighbors or some such, turned to walk into her unit at which point in time the man kind of came at her from behind, grabbed her purse, shoved her down to the ground and pulled a gun. >> reporter: in the video you can see the attacker's armed. it looks like he's about to leave after scuffling with the victim, then returns, continuing to aim what looks like a semi-automatic handgun. this video of the attack has rattled this condominium

nbc bay area's sergio quintana talked with that man. he's live in san francisco with the details. >> reporter: this all happened late at night. he got home from work, parked his car, looked at the parking sign and realized that he had to move his car by noon the next day. unfortunately, he got stabbed twice as he was walking home. now he's recovering and having to deal with a parking ticket from the sfmta. when anthony deguzman was stabbed twice just steps from his door last month, moving his car on street sweeping day probably wasn't his first worry. but even if it was, he couldn't have called his family anyway. >> i couldn't contact them because my phone, my watch, and my cash on me was taken. >> reporter: because he is the victim of a violent crime, he asked us not to show his face. after emergency surgery at san francisco general hospital, a family member did move his car. that's when they found a ticket. even now deguzman doesn't blame the meter maid. >> they don't know what happened to me, so if the car's out on the street and it'
