servicemembers are entire tuber seek religious exemptions. a couple of things to unpack.hey say you've gotta have vaccines it's a gerbe deployabl and also they are considering religious exemptions. >> the law provides a four exemptions in numerous situations including religious exemptions. they are doing to these 35 navy seals were representing is really outrageous. these are heroes the people we are represented the navy seals at 350 years of service over 10 combat missions. it yet they're being threatened court-martial. by the way everything i'm describing is illegal because you do have a requite to reques that these things. there being threatened with court-martial and take it off a special operations duty which means the pay is immediately lowered. their families are being punished. all of it is totally inappropriate. it's illegal. it's disgusting and it's something i think it's un-american and we shouldn't have--our sales are shouldn't have to go through this. after all they've done for us. in fact, i'll tell people if they want to support them we have a way they can

and you have a policy enacted of repatriation bringing back the remains of deceased servicemembers whod fighting, bringing them back to the continental united states to be buried closer to home. that conflict did not last quite as long, and it had significantly fewer casualties than the first world war, which plays into some of the decisionmaking about how to deal with repatriation and how the importance, i should say, of a tomb of the unknown soldier. before we get to that, though, i will mention that in 1913, congress approved and authorized spending for the government to create a new memorial amphitheater at arlington national cemetery. at this point the cemetery had been in use since the civil war, and they recognized the need for a larger and more somber space to accommodate the visitors who were there to pay tribute to their deceased loved ones. and, so, they appropriated the funds, they authorized the spending to create this new amphitheater and really made this investment in arlington national cemetery as the nation's premier cemetery, the nation's premier place to pay this spe

you that the cfpb in the past has taken a number of actions on companies that have harmed our servicemembers, our veterans particularly in the mortgage market. i appreciate the work the bureau has done to protect those who have protected us but there's always more to be done to stay ahead of the bad actors so director chopra i know the cfpb has efforts on the place to look out for servicemembers and veterans. will you walk us throughwhat that's going to look like under your leadership ? >> we're going to refresh that quite a bit. i want to make sure our veterans and connected families work is part of how we look at so many of our products but also how we enforce the law. i had a chance to discuss this with the attorney general and the justice department and we need to make sure we're cooperating on the military lending act enforcement and continuing our work on the servicemembers civil relief act. there are many laws that protect these families and i'll tell you, we saw a decade ago that many of them including people who were deployed in theinner their homes taken from them . we've seen peop

our servicemembers represent a great investment in the country. if they do have to go into harm's way, it's our responsibility to make sure that they are the best prepared, best equipped and the best led forces in the battlefield, and the bill does that. but we don't want them to go to war. we want them to prevent those wars from happening. as i said earlier, the best way we do that is by projecting strength, sending a message to our adversaries that there is no chance that they can beat us. the ndaa is -- is the major way that we send that message. that's why the ndaa, the national defense authorization act, the most significant bill of the year, has been enacted into law every year for the past 60 years. this will be the 61st year. so we're going to get it passed. but it's almost -- it almost never comes up this late in the year. this is a disadvantage we're working from, but it always gets done eventually. we still have a lot of work left to do after this and not a lot of time to do it. we got a late start. we can't afford late starts. if you d

the skill and bravery about the allowedthe servicemembers to exe the mission. to be sure, there were complicationsto and tragedies. while airlifting up to 9,000 people per day, we experienced overcrowding at the airport and the basis for even a qb's on their way to the united states. in the highly dynamic environment we had to adapt to access and evacuate the citizenn and in the end we were unable to reach some of those by august 301st. there were also heartbreaking costs and in the final days of the withdrawal we lost 13 american service members to the suicide attack onre the airport. of these 13 heroes sacrificed their lives to save tens of thousands of people and we willo mourn the tragedy of the deaths and honor of a humanity that they demonstrated in their final mission. i'm also acutely aware of the cost last week i met with the president of nutrition and education international. he told me of the extraordinary lifeke of an aid worker employed by nei and one of the august 29 airstrike in kabul. it was clear from the conversation that among the ten innocen

for example, taking care of our servicemembers. 2.7% pay raise for military servicemembers and the department of defense civilian workforce. that pay raise is important. if this bill doesn't pass, it won't happen. so that's one of the immediate reasons that we need to pass this bill, to provide a pay raise to our military personnel. they will also receive 12 weeks of parental leave for birth, adoption, and foster care placement of a child. one of the provisions that i am interested in is that there is substantial support in this bill for our naval infrastructure. it authorizes funding for example, two destroyers which bath ironworks in the state of maine will be able to compete for, and in furtherance supports our navy's ability to deter adversaries around the world. it's no secret that the pacific is an important area of potential conflict, and the pacific is an ocean and it requires ships in order to project power. those ships are built here in america. this bill demonstrates congress' intent to support the navy, to support shipbuilding, and to support the industrial base. one of the things

not only did we send quite a few servicemembers overseas to serve in the wars, there were a few contractorsver there to. we have a system set up for the veterans of these wars, but for contractors who lived through that same smoke or dealt with the same posttraumatic stress, there is not necessarily the same support there. and this gentleman's case, i would have to look through his files to figure out exactly what might be eligible when, but it's worth watching the new announcement from the white house today to sort of see where , how they are going to interpret some of these new veterans benefits, where they are going to be drawing the line , how they interpret development of when the illnesses develop or what they are caused by. but in a lot of these cases, the burden falls on the contractor. it falls on the country and whether or not they provide adequate care and adequate protection for folks who served overseas. host: patrick in florida, we will go to you next. caller: thanks for taking my call. three quick things. first of all, the majority of v.a. spending goes to nonservice related
