all right, seth, how do you find this thing? >> well, yeah, it would be useful to at least know in what part of the world this plane went down. and that's a possibility we are finally now looking at if, in fact, these floating debris turn out to be wreckage from the plane. but still a very long way from finding a debris field at the bottom of the ocean. for perspective, chris, think about air france 447 which went down off brazil about a half decade ago. within a couple of days, yes, there was debris floating, and, yet, it took nearly two years to find the debris field at the bottom of the ocean and then about another year after that to know what happened. all of that in an incident that was much more clear from the beginning. we knew that plane had flown into bad weather. there were distress signals. you didn't have somebody by all appearances trying to have us not know what had happened. >> is it even possible -- i mean, is there any precedent for finding something in this remote an area? i mean, you've got essentially planes

you're a value investor like seth klarman. >> what seth is saying will be true eventually, but the assumption that the market going up 30% when the economy didn't do all that much assumes it was fairly priced a year ago. frankly, we think a year ago it was discounting a bit higher inflation. inflation has come in. it's about 1.7%. frankly, we think it's fairly priced for about a 2% to 2.25% inflation. there's all kinds of things out there that can hit it. you know the litany as well as i do, and the bears always have better specific arguments, but the ultimate bull argument is that this country and this economy tends to muddle through. we're no longer finding things cheap, but we're not running for the hills just yet either. >> seth has been skeptical on what's going on in markets for some time. he's called it the hostess twinkle market saying it's totally artificial ingredients. is this totally artificial or is it not? is there something fundamental whether it's on the corporate earnings side or whether it's with regard to other u.s. demographic factors, et cetera, is there something fundame

first we'll go to seth doane with the very latest. seth. >> reporter: good evening to you, scott. that search area has widen to include a 115-mile ride roadwayuous from where the plane lost contact, and those search teams, clght 34 aircraft and 40 ships, are, in authorities' words, combing every inch of the sea. what appeared to be clues have been debunked. a giant oil slick spotted in the south china sea was tested but nor were pieces of debris that at first appeared to be part of an airplane. no distress signals were sent from the plane, but radar indicates flight 370 may have turned back before losing contact with air traffic control. two passengers traveling on stolen passports with tickets both purchased from the same travel agent in thailand are now a key focus of the investigation. but the lack of answers is only adding to the misery of waiting family members. >> i want some answer, but-- ( sighs ) but i also don't want an answer. because an answer is the end, right? >> reporter: sarah bajc's american boyfriend philip wood was on board flight 370. he was running late and al

-- . >> pelley: seth doane, reporting, thank you. and the investigators are now looking again at the backgrounds of the two pilots. one of whom had built a flight simulator at his home. here's bob orr. >> reporter: investigators want to determine if the flight simulator found in captain zaharie shah's home was ever used to practice radar-evading maneuvers and landings at remote airstrips. sources say a preliminary analysis found nothing unusual in the simulator or zaharie's background. he's a married father of three. and a flight instructor with more than 18,000 hours of experience. but the sequence of events surrounding the jetliner's disappearance is focusing suspicion on zaharie and his copilot farrek hamid. the 27-year-old fariq has 2700 hours flying having ream moved to the 777. he has been described as a quiet, religious man who was planning to marry. malaysian officials today said it was fariq who uttered the last words from flight 370. all right, good night, he said at 1:19 a.m. on march 8th. two minutes later at 1:21 the pla

seth doane is in malaysia. seth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, anne-marie. yes, this has been just an agonizing wait for family members as you might imagine over the last 12, 13 days just following this news. i just got off the phone with a friend of the pilot, a guy named peter chong who told me this has been like a roller coaster, an up and down of emotion. right now he says he feels like he's at the bottom of that roller coaster, not sure when he's going to go back up. we've had relatively limited access to family members in kuala lumpur, but cbs news has been speaking with family members back in beijing where there's been a mix of hope and one person whispered to our cbs news producer, we all know what this might mean. of course, everyone is being very cautious in saying we've heard news before, we've seen satellite photos before that have turned out to be nothing, so people are being very, very cautious to say too much. but i think that one e-mail i got just kind of sums it all up. it's from a woman named sara bajc who i interviewed back in beijing. she

seth, good morning. >> reporter: yes, that's right, anthony.amily members, relatives, friends all waiting for information, waiting for news and not particularly encouraged by the news that investigators behind this search are baffled by it. for more than two days a fleet of planes and ships have been combing every inch of the south china sea, officials claim looking for any sign of malaysia airlines flight 370. >> we are equally puzzled. the honorable prime minister used the word perplexing. >> reporter: according to authorities, the flight left kuala lumpur after midnight saturday, heading to bay gineijing. it was last detected on radar 1:30 a.m., 85 miles north of coastal malaysia. 2:40 a.m., at 35,000 feet, it made one last contact before vanishing. sunday, a low-flying plane appeared to spot a clue but at a press conference today, investigators said no debris had been verified. malaysian authorities are analyzing radar that indicates the flight may have turned back just before losing contact. and today, they released the results of lab test
