seth shostak, an author and phd in astrophysics from cal tech. it's good to see you.k to us tonight. >> you're more than welcome, brian. >> i was thinking i wonder what seth's take on all this stuff is. i mean could they be of extraterrestrial origin? could they be of foreign origin? do they also have teenagers in new jersey? what do you think? >> well, i used to live in new jersey and i did spy a few teenagers on the streets of trenton, but i don't think that that's what this is. i think that this is just what you think it is. it's a drone. i don't know if it's been put into the sky by teenagers, but i don't think it's an interstellar craft. >> okay. what do you think it is? do you think it's just ordinary drone flyers and they're having a picnic and getting together on facebook and plotting times to do this or do you think there's something more sinister afoot? >> no. there's something between 8,000 to 10,000 drones sold in the united states. i have one in my garage, brian, and i don't usually fly it at night because at night you can run into trees or houses or who

seth jones, thank you very much. sobering, but important to hear all of that. and michael arenella joins me now, professional drone pilot. michael, look, you fly drones for a living, and i want to show you here what you filmed one of the video, a video of the mystery drones that you filmed yourself, and you filmed this using your own drone. can you tell me what we're looking at here? >> good evening, and thanks for having me. yeah, we are showing a drone that i took off earlier this evening, and we were taking off, seeing really what these drones, airplanes are in the air. really where they are coming from, what they are doing, where they are going or even where they're coming from. but a lot of the time we're seeing now when we're up in the air is mainly commercial, private airplanes. >> so, okay, when the drones that you do see and i know obviously for many some of these sightings, as seth was pointing out, many of them are commercial, you know, aircraft, they are some of them are drones, as he says, that they simply do not know where they're coming from. tho

and seth jones joins me now. national security expert now, senior vice president, center for strategic and international studies. obviously, former member of u.s. special operations command. and, seth, i know you've talked about you know, this is begging for an incident. i know you have some new intel about these drones that have now been spotted, frankly, across multiple states up and down the east coast. what can you share? >> well, erin, i think the the issue here is this is a national problem. i know the recent focus has been on states like connecticut and new jersey, but if you even look at the last month or so, i'll just point to two interesting incidents in november of 2024, there was a man arrested in the nashville area for an armed drone plotting an attack against an electricity substation. so that's that is clearly the use of a drone for an attack and a terrorist attack on u.s. soil. again using a drone. the second is there was an arrest this week in california of a chinese citizen illegally, allegedly

as you can see, it seth. >> well, look i think the russian military is trying to push forward in thearea of donetsk and luhansk in ukraine. but the reality is that the russians have suffered extraordinary casualties and still are on the front lines. they have not been able to effectively take back the take back the kursk area of russia, that the ukrainians now control. >> as we've talked about aaron. >> the russians have suffered about 4 to 5 times more casualties than in all wars since world war ii combined. so that's both the soviet union and and russia itself. now to to to have to deal with syria right now and hay'at tahrir al-sham with really no effective ground force because hezbollah is not going to play a role. >> they did in aleppo when the syrians took it. >> the iranians had a major ground presence as well. >> qassem soleimani, the former head of the islamic revolutionary guards quds force actually was in the joint operations center so the russians are in serious trouble, right now on multiple fronts. >> and i think their military is suffering badly because of it. >> and of
