seth doane is in a very anxious chile tonight. seth, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, maggie. chile's mining minister told us today that it will likely be at least another 10 hours before the drill punches through to the area where the miners are trapped and that's a moment these families have been waiting for. roughly half a mile deep under the barren desert those drill heads keep grinding ever closer. above ground rehearsals for the rescue are under way. the target area for the drill is known as the workshop located across from and slightly higher than the miners' living area. the miners themselveses will complete the rescue shaft by blasting it with dynamite. engineers above ground will then use a t.v. camera to inspect the rescue hole and decide if it needs to be reinforced with a metal lining. installing the lining could delay rescue anywhere from four to ten days. >> it's not a technical piece of cake. >> reporter: and before any miners come out, a doctor and a rescue expert will go in. once cleared, miners will leave

seth doane is in chile at the mine with more. >> reporter: it was an emotional and exciting night here in the shadow of the san jose mine and the rescue operation is in full swing now. they want to extract roughly one miner every hour. so, if it continues to move ahead according to plan, it will last, these rescue operations will last, well through the next day and into the night. but, it has been so incredibly emotional. we were in the middle of camp hope, the area where miners' families have set up vigil for months, for weeks, waiting for word. and when that first miner stepped out of that cage, we were there as the crowd just erupted with joy. grown men hugging, crying, just tears of emotion. so incredibly well choreographed by the chilean government captured almost every angle on televisions that were broadcast not only around the nation and around nearby towns but around the mine, as well. the rescue operation, of course, is not over, but it appears to be moving ahead as scheduled, as this dramatic story continues to unfold. seth doane, cbs news, at the san jose mine, chile. >> no

seth doane reporting from near the san jose mine in chile tonight. seth, thank you. as seth just mentioned, all the rescued miners will get a full medical checkup as soon as they emerge. dr. jon lapook is here with more on that part of the story. what will doctors be looking for, jon, when it comes to examining these miners? >> at first just the basics: blood pressure, pulse, oxygen level and a special attention to the lungs because they've been in dark, dingy damp area for so long there's set up for lung infections. >> couric: what are the risks as they travel to the surface through the capsule which is quite small? >> it's only the diameter of a basketball hoop. they're quite concerned. they're actually monitoring them with a machine around their belt, they'll wear oxygen masks on the way up. one of the problems is that they'll faint. the blood as you stand straight up pools to the legs and may not reach the heart and the brain. the other problem is you get to the surface and suddenly after all this time in darkness you have the sunlight which can suddenly harm the

seth doan reports. >> reporter: they will leave the hospital and they will leave a controlled communication bubble. journalists will have more access to them. there are cracks emerging in the unity. the first three miners released from the hospital late last night in what continues to be a picture perfect rescue. for more than two months, we witnessed a scene of harmony among them. there are reports from deep underground that there were uglier moments we did not see. according to a freelance journalist, the first 17 days before they were discovered was extremely intense. there was fighting among them that came to blows. even feelings of despair. evenaa fear of cannibolism. that is all in the past as they continue to celebrate their freedom. the only bolivian of the 33 had worked in the mine five days before the collapse. he said to the crowd, i'm very thankful and long live chile. he was welcomed home still wearing sun glasses to protect his eyes. but already getting a glimpse of the spotlight. after worrying about their rescue for up to 70 days, day 71 brought the chance for recovery. rela

our correspondent seth doane is at the mine this morning in cope yeah poe chile with the latest. seth, how is it going? >> reporter: good morning, maggie. family members dealt a bit of a setback yesterday when they learned the miners would not be out this weekend. but, deep underground, they are still waiting. and it's evident that they could be out very soon. excitement above ground continues to grow. there's not long to go now, this aunt of a miner said. mobile hospital units were brought to the mine. as were parts of a giant crane to hoist up the miners. both arrivals heightened expectations here, as three separate drills work non-stop to reach the miners. the closest drill now is called plan b. it was the second rescue shaft to be started but uses faster equipment. once the rescue begins, three paramedics from the chillan navy special forces and 13 mining rescue experts will be lowered into the mine to aid in the rescue. they will determine the order in which the miners leave. whoever is first to go will be someone most emotionally able to handle a setback in case there's a pr
