the black dots here, they are about six to 12 miles apart, which send signals to the alert center and we hear about it after that. that's a big part of the project. representatives from bart, sf general hospital, utilities were on hand as the state senator alex padilla held the hearing here at city hall, focused on this earthquake early warning system that's in the works that could give people anywhere from ten to 60 seconds of advanced warning. depends, of course, how close you are from the epicenter. a beta version of the system worked in august, giving a ten-second warning before the south napa magnitude 6.0 quake. this was the most powerful earthquake to shake the area since loma prieta in 1989, and speaking of which, friday is the 25th anniversary of that quake. most of the deaths happened when the cyprus viaduct fell. advanced warning would allow people to get off the roads, find a safe place, and could save lives. amazingly we learned it's technology created in california by institutions like cal tech and cal that's being used in other places before it's even in place here. >> other countries like mexico and japan and others, it's the same technology that's been in eff
