to find out more, visit them on the web at sfgov >> good afternoon, everybody. we know it is only april. they are going to have access to high-quality summer learning opportunities this summer. it is not just the nice thing to do have, because it is actually critical to our students. many children suffer from summer learning loss, and i know many of you have heard of it. it has gotten a lot of attention nationally, the phenomenon where children who are not engaged in learning activity over summer are losing ground academically. they are forgetting the skills, and they start the next school year behind. children are falling more and more behind. the research suggests that two- thirds of the achievement gap between low and middle income children who can be attributed to what happens in the summer. it also turns out many children are gaining weight more rapidly in the summer because they lose access to physical activities and meal programs they have access to during the school year, so it is clear there is a lot at stake, which is why we have launch this summer mat

for families who are watching this on sfgov, go to sfkids.org, or call 311, to learn more about summer programming in your area. dcyf offers year-run programs that are seamless in services for children, youth, and families. we funded with the human services agency services for children birth through five the provide year-round services for child-care, and family resource centers. there are 24 centers throughout the city. dcyf also funds 58 comprehensive summer programs that serve approximately 3800 young people from kindergarten through eighth grade, throughout the city. i apologize that this map is extremely small. this might give you a better picture of the concentration of our programs and services. as you can see, there are more programs in all the higher density -- the neighborhoods where there are more children. i am sorry. these programs serve approximately 3800 young people. one thing we want to emphasize is we asked all of our summer programs to have at least eight hours of programming per day, five days a week, with a goal of helping working families. of course, the types of

as we are taping this with sfgov tv i will ask you to ask your question into the microphone so they can pick it up. and you, too will be on tv. now nobody wants to. i will ask a requequestion, wha you working on now? >> does that sound planted? it wasn't. i just finished a monster of a book it's a huge book, set in japan and covers the earth from 1939 and 1966 about 2 brothers and the title is a street of a thousand blossoms. if you haven't noticed we are talking about themes that run through my book. one of the things i like a lot is exploring subcultures. the lepercy. the silk working women. i like to write about groups of people who persevere and make a life on their own aside from what the general culture is doing. i find that i don't consciously sit down and do that but it happens. in this particular book something that has fascinated me is sumo and sumo wrestlers and how they get so big and what it's like in their culture. one of the brothers becomes an sumo and that's why it's a big book! so that's my hope, you know, that this book i wrote, this story gets out, we're on sfgov tv. somebody will say, i have a cable car house, nobody asked me. come take a look at it. because right now we're down to one or two maybe that are still around when we're talking about there used to be hundreds. >> essentially into a generation of tearing them down. no more construction. complete replacement. >> yeah. in the 1910, about 1913, 1914, they really started pushing to get rid of them. when that open block that sutro rented, right on the edge of the sunset, when that cleared out, it eliminated the visibility of carville. we talk about a whole block of car houses that were still there. when that gets replaced by apartment buildings, suddenly you have a car house here, one there. just where people haven't taken the time to tear it out or build a conventional home. in the 1920's or 1930's, things were booming house building wise out there. so if you have a little empty lot that has an old car house on it you'd be stupid not to build a stucco house there and make a quick buck. by t
