i am director of sustainable streets with the sfmta. once again, we are very pleased to be the lead agency in sponsoring the sunday streets program for 2011. it is one of a series of very healthy and family-friendly events to take place in san francisco to promote walking, biking, and just generally taking advantage of the streets that are open and car-free, but it is more than that. i think it is also a chance for the residents of san francisco to reconnect not only with themselves, but the rich, diverse neighborhoods that connect our community. we have been very fortunate to have this program embraced by both residents and merchants, and the rapid spread of the program is a testimony of how popular it has become. this program would not have been possible without the cooperation from our fellow city agencies as well as the mayor's office and all of the private partners we have the i will get into a in a little bit. speaking of the mayor's office, i would like to introduce mr. edwin lee, mayor of san francisco. mayor lee: good morning.

nathaniel ford of the sfmta board of directors worked hard to convince many doubters. i think the smartest thing that the sfmta did was to trust its talented staff to take the lead in making this project happen. the people who were working on s.f. park are the smartest and most talented and most overworked civil servants i have ever met. so if s.f. park is a success, it will be in large part due to the heroic determination to make it work here. the central idea of s.f. park is that you can't set the right price for curb parking without looking at the results. the goal is to set the lowest price that the city can charge and still have one or two open spaces on every block so that cars won't have to circle cruising for parking like hawks hunting for prey. s.f. park sets a clear principle for setting the prices for curb parking. the lowest price the city can charge without creating a shortage. so the right price for curb parking in san francisco is rather like the supreme court's definition of pornography. i know it when i see it. and because san francisco set this policy

addressed issues with the not only then-department of public parking and traffic, but also with muni, now sfmta come on issues this district has been working on for over 10 years. on the same transportation issues, these are major factors in the neighborhood. a major intersection for models of traffic are mission street and geneva. one of the heaviest intersections in san francisco. geneva avenue, i-280, highway 101, bubble park station, and with that, and the better parts neighborhood in 2002. we want to get it finished. there is a proposed transit city village. one of the biggest issues we deal with in the district is we do with the legal building and a blight issues. one of the things that our organization -- not only representing district 11 in the district 11 council -- was life issues and have reworked -- how we worked with light issues, whether it was with dpw or dbi issues, code violations or graffiti issues. san francisco has passed laws regarding these issues, including not only taxis parking in residential neighborhoods, and businesses being run out of homes with fleets of cars and t

made to providing a permanent transit subsidy for every new unit on the project site and explains how sfmta will administer the program over time. we are in ongoing discussions with the san francisco public utilities commission on the implementation of the sustainable power generation requirements in the sustainability plan. if you recall from our previous presentation before the committee, the project sponsor committed to effectively a 10% power generation commitment of renewable energy and 10% commitment for cogen or energy derived from co-generation. these are commitments above and beyond san francisco's existing standards for renewable energy and conservation. that agreement is undergoing revisions based on feedback from sfpuc staff, and we will be submitting additional revisions this coming friday to the clerk took just concerns raised by sfpuc staff on the structure of the agreement. again, it is based on the sustainability plan, which this committee and planning commission has previously reviewed. in addition to those revisions to those exhibits, changes were made to address concerns

the sfmta is at the forefront of providing support for this event. a lot of the speakers have mentioned the green by claims, improvements, park lit, thing that make our city more livable. so i want to thank the staff of the mta. i see a lot of you out there now. just to hear the support from the board of supervisors and know that the board of supervisors and mta is on the same page. the sustainable streets group, you are doing such great work, and i am proud to support it. the chairman of our board is here. he rode in with mayor lee. i rode in with supervisor wiener's group, from the castro. i want to mention the fact that there was a 58% increase in the city in the last four years. that is an impressive number, but even more when you put it in context. could we have handled a 58% increase for muni writers? 58% increase in car traffic during rush hour? no one would be going anywhere. this is a lesson to us. we have an ambitious goal. 20% of trips are bike trips by 2020. we can do it. if we have already increased 58 -- 58% in four years, we can do it.
