it seems sfmta has serious outreach problems in -- and a pr problem. the coalition with small business has been left out of the loop. we were brought to the table at the point where we became a spoiler; the plans were drawn up without our input. the community residents and businesses seeing strongly opposed to the plan and yet we come across as a bad guy because we are trying to change plans that have already been put forward. the question is, why would the process not include the community that it will impact so dramatically and the businesses that it will impact so dramatically? they claim there was outreach but none of us saw it. we had no idea. god knows we are very interested in that is why there has been so much emotion, because it was after everything had been proposed that we were brought to the table. we are the spoilers and working from a position of weakness when we should've been included in the process from the very beginning. it would have meant that the board would have come up with plans that included input from everybody not go back to

thank the number of departments that are working together with walk sf and not only public works but sfmta which is taking a lead on pedestrian strategies and making sure our streets are safer with our police department and with our health department and so many others . they are coming together to form a strategy that not only encourages people to walk but we need to do more to ensure our streets and sidewalks are safe for our school kids, parents, seniors, everybody who we encourage to walk more and keep healthy and also need to work more on the safety of our streets. that's the announcement i wanted to make today in addition to walk to workday and that we now have presented online and paper form a pedestrian strategy program led by the sfmta and transit authority along with their partnership with public health, public works and with our police department. we have in the past back in 2010, set a goal that in 10 years by 2021 we should cut the number of pedestrian fatalities by 50 percent. we are going to measure our way there in the next eight years. we have identified through numerous m

i know one of the concerns that the sfmta had is that this would delay their exemption process. the question that i would have, first of all, is how many sfmta exemptions actually come before the planning commission for approval? but even if it has to come before the planning commission for approval, it doesn't delay the process because they can't move forward with the project until the planning commission approves it anyway. so, why not allow testimony for those exemptions at the same time that you're hearing that approval. another point that had come up in the planning commission -- i'm sorry, planning staff's report is that our legislation requires staff to attend every project approval hearing before the planning commission. our legislation does not require staff to be present for the hearing. an ero report may be enough, and we certainly don't want to increase staff time here at the commission. there is also a question about whether notice of determinations for negative declarations and e-i-rs are necessary and whether we should include that as an option. our intent is real

we continue to work closely with the sfmta for subway and work on ways to keep the project moving should federal fund be delayed. on the local front we are trying to confirm a date for transportation workshop now into early may. i encourage fellow commissioners to attend and this will provide an opportunity for investment scenarios for the plan. on a related note, early this morning, the director, myself attended the task force. the mayor has set an ambitious goal to priorities recommendation for this fall. a collaborative effort of the work coming on on the transportation plan. also attended the meeting today were commissioners chiu and wiener and to discuss the level of the focus where the transportation task force works on capital projects and operations as well of the mta. that was something that supervisor wiener was very thorough about explaining this morning. lastly on the executive director recruitment effort, the personnel committee met on the hawkins company to provide selection with a permanent executive director. i met with the group last week and i believe meetings are being
