. >>> air traffic at sfo was hampered tonight because of the unstable area in the bay area. it kept a lot of passengers and planes on the ground. others could not land. many flights experienced delays up to three hours. kron 4's da lin talked to frustrated travelers. the check in line stretched for three blocks. >> our mouths dropped dropped and we were walking and walking. this is the longest line i have ever seen. >> i have only made it one foot. >> our surprise, it's very, very long. >> reporter: patience was tested at sfo. passengers fed up. >> four hours. i am not happy. yeah. totally irritated. >> reporter: the line is due to delays caused by the rainy weather and a tornado weather. the national weather service issued the tornado warning friday morning and that forced them to ground flights and stop arriving flights from coming in. that lasted for 30 minutes. many flights experienced delays up to three hours. southwest airlines had a hard time recovering from it. because a lot of their passengers missed their connection flights and that was what led to the long lines.

terry mcsweeney joins us live from sfo with more of these unique passengers. terry?> yeah, welcome to operation chihuahua, 14 chihuahuas heading from sfo back to new york where they have homes. these are very, very popular dogs seem to be a lot of them out here, not so much out there. operation chihuahua is rebecca kaats and i'm not kidding. talking about dogs today. tell me about operation chihuahua. >> so this is the third time that virgin america has helped. they've flown chihuahuas to the east coast where they're in really high demand. we just have an overpopulation here in california and they're not quickly adopted there and they get adopted almost immediately there. we've got one, two, three -- all over the place. the media all over the place. why so many chihuahuas. >> i think they've become very popular through television and commercials and movies and so forth but they're also easily bred. people don't have a lot of space and they think they're easy to breed. they are dogs, they need care. people aren't spaying and neutering as much and they're breeding like

and sharon chin is at sfo where the dogs have arrived. i think you met every one of them, didn't you, sharon? >> most of them. >> reporter: they arrived about half hour ago and they are going through security in preparation for their flight to new york. this is all part of operation chihauhau, a team effort between the san francisco animal care and control and virgin america. there's going to be one airline volunteer or shelter staff member per dog as they board the flight. here's what's going on. the shelter is getting far more chihauhaus than they can handle but they are in high demand on the east coast so virgin america is taking the dogs to the east coast at no extra cost to be developed out of the manhattan aspca. earlier this morning, we asked local shelter staffer the reason for the the overpopulation on the west coast of chihauhaus. >> really easy to breed. you know, we live in small spaces and they don't take up a lot of space. they are still a lot of work and people find that out quickly and relinquish them to the shelters but t

we begin, though, with breaking news at sfo. a philippines airlines jet is being detained in a remote part of the airport following reports of a bomb threat. the flight arrives at sfo from the philippines earlier tonight. we have the latest developments. kim, first and foremost, what's the status of the passengers and is this bomb threat legitimate? >> reporter: police are investigating exactly that, whether that bomb threat was legitimate. it was a phone call. it was not specific to a plane i'm being told, but it is something they're investigating. i'm told that those passengers have all gotten off the plane and are now going through customs but will have to wait to get their luggage because canine teams are going through. right now san francisco police are still conducting a search at the philippines airlines plane that land the at 7:30 this evening. this was shot for police waiting for passengers. the call came into the airline at 2:30 this afternoon as the flight was en route from manila to san francisco international airpor

they were headed for sfo. it derailed right after they left this concord station. the operator had just switched to a single track mode and it was trying to get around other work on another track. that is when two cars came off the track. 65 people were on board at the time. three suffered minor injuries. the derailment forced bart to close down service between pittsburgh and concord stretch for some 19 hours. they did have a contingency plan in place today if they did not have things back up to normal but thankfully they didn't have to go to that backup plan. they described what it felt like. >> it was like i was moving back and forth. i thought maybe the tracks weren't clear. it seemed like he was braking or something of that sort. >> and, again, three people injured, minor injuries yesterday in that train derailment here in concord. the big focus now will be for investigators both with bart and the state public utilities commission to try and take the information they gathered yesterday on scene and figure out exactly why this derailment happened in the first pl

our flight to sfo was packed. it seemed like we got the last two seats. we found bay area people who said they decided to fly home as soon as they could. >> we weren't sure what was going on with the nuclear situation. we wanted to sort of leave the country and be out of the way. so if anything went worse, that we weren't around for it. >> reporter: just about 15 hours after we left, the u.s. embassy announced they were setting up evacuation charter flights for u.s. citizens. this is video we just got from embassy staff setting up a help desk at the airport. the first evacuation flight took off early this morning. and the second evacuation flight was scheduled to take off six hours ago. and coming up at 6:00, we're -- coming up on the 10:00 news, we're going to tell you about a pilot's family who was evacuated. our plan was to get a car, a train, a flight up there to the tsunami disaster area. but it was nearly impossible with the nuclear situation, it was very difficult. many foreign press now are pulling back to tokyo or pulling out of the country. >> j
