so far, flights from terminal 2 at sfo are on time. but later on, the airport is anticipating more people and more flights coming in and going out of sfo, more than 63,000 travelers, in fact, will be passing through these terminals. and that means longer lines checking in and security and boarding your flight. as lawrence mentioned that storm on the east coast is expected to complicate thousands of travelers' thanksgiving plans. but a couple we spoke to this morning say they planned for that. >> you go early and you go with the flow if it's delayed. >> and we have our kindles so we have them to read and your cell phones to play on. so we'll have a good time. >> reporter: airports in new york, new jersey, philadelphia and boston as lawrence mentioned are already seeing some of those major delays and the problem for bay area travelers is those east coast delays will eventually trickling down here. now, the most common tip we're hearing from airport officials, if you can, come an hour and a half to two hours early before your flight. not

among bay area airports, sfo is notorious for delayed flights when the weather is wet and cloudy. the airport admits bad weather can cut the number of planes landing in half from 60 an hour to a measly 30. but a new procedure for landing planes hopes to improve that. it's nicknamed casper. >> it stands for closely spaced parallel runways. it's a new faa procedure that applies to sfo and a few other airports around the country. >> reporter: airports like boston and seattle. here's how cspr works. on bright sunny days planes can land at sfo side by side touching down on two different runways no problem. but when bad weather would strike, this kind of landing wasn't allowed. planes could only land in a single file line leading to long delays for passengers. cspr changes that allowing planes in bad weather to land staggered like this. a small plane paired up with a bigger plane a shorter 1 1/2 miles apart. the hope is cspr will allow the airport to land about five to ten more planes a day in bad weather. >> anything we can do to shorten the amount of delays we experience would be bene

. >>> we have new details this evening on the summer's crash at sfo and asiana airlines. they have released a report on what happens after the crash, which includes what went right and what didn't. nbc bay area sheryl herd got a look at what officials found and joins us from sfo with the latest. >>> well, we found out that the preliminary reports actually found out that the airport did a lot of things right on that fateful day when flight 214 crashed back in july, killing three and injuring 180 others. they also discovered that several things could have been done better. for example, the airport gives ichts high marks amongst first responders. the report cited good coordination between local hospitals and quick action to reopen affected runways, but the report pointed out the lack of a streamlined plan from ems responders that came from two different counties. san francisco and san mateo county. the airport website also proved to be a huge problem. it drashed when 50,000 or more people tried to access it. the report also addressed the issue of hotel price gauging during t

. >>> sfo could see fewer flight delays in the future. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran on the new landing protocol that should keep more runways open during bad weather. >> reporter: bay area travelers know bad weather, thick fog are the common culprits to backing up arriving flights into sfo. but a new faa landing protocol plans to open up both airports' runways to keep air traffic moving at a steady pace. right now on a clear day airplanes are allowed to fly side by side on the parallel runways. but when the weather outside is frightful, planes are only allowed to use one runway flying in one by one creating a single file backup. an faa spokesman says under the new protocol, planes still won't land side by side but the faa will allow staggered landings on two runways and that means an additional 1 to 6 planes can land. sfo airport officials say this won't be the end-all, be-all to weather delays but will help get rid of some of the backup and you on time to your destination. i know a lot of travelers are wondering will opening two runways
