primary, out of chicago heading towards sfo. also out of cleveland heading to sfo.ook a look at some weather conditions finally above zero but barely. chicago o'hare now reporting two above zero. meanwhile, here at sfo, we have plenty of cloud cover and a light to heavy drizzle at 53 degrees. so if we have any more delays here at sfo today, it could possibly be even be because of our own local weather not the polar vortex. let's give you a recap. yesterday, we were talking about 2500 cancellations of planes all across the country due to that polar vortex. you get a lot of unclaimed baggage and that was the case locally from sfo to mineta and oakland international airport. i checked in with the cbs marketwatch they say we have seen airports and airlines report $1.4 billion in losses and over 19,000 airline cancellations. that is over the pass 7 days. meanwhile, today an improving situation, although people at the country at every, single state except hawaii waking up with 32 or below. i checked with a town i hawaii, 72 degrees there. right now we have low ceiling and

looking toward sfo, we have seen drizzle there, as well. so that's going to cause storm delays in and out of sfo. temperatures now mainly in the 50s, fog in the valleys, quarter mile visibility in santa rosa. this afternoon, partial clearing, cooler, highs in the 50s at the coast, low 60s in the bay and the valleys. >>> the much asked for liz! i just checked the big board inside sfo. and it looks like for jet blue passengers, this could be a happier travel day for them. all the jet blue flights including the ones to new york and boston scheduled to be on time this morning. but not all passengers here are going to be so lucky today. four flights from sfo to the east coast canceled. eight arrivals from the east coast to sfo canceled. all the flights are out of newark, milwaukee, chicago, boston, and jfk. now this has been a wild couple of days for all these airlines. 19 canceled flights here at sfo in total yesterday. many of those chicago-bound. and many passengers have to waitdays now the for -- waitdays now for their next flight. >> there's nothing i can do. i suggested to -- family to a different state but they can't do it. >> reporter: so the good news is at least for jet blue passengers it looks like their flights are going to be on time. coming up at 5:30 we're going to talk to the jet blue passengers here in line now and see what they have to say. mark kelly

it's not bad here at sfo. i've checked as far as cancellations go and so far, there's been 13 cancelations but they've all been from flights arriving from the east here to sfo. there's just been one cancellation departing from sfo today. now, the heavy yes snowfall in the middle east and northwest is causing a lot of problems for airports there. the number of canceled flights keeps growing every hour. flighttracker.com is reporting more than 2,000 canceled flights and there's about the same amount of delays. the airports hardest hit are la guardia, boston, j.f.k. at logan airport, officials grounded all nights overnight until about 5:00 a.m. j.f.k. was closed overnight but it reopened a couple of hours ago. we poke to passengers departing sfo who were concerned about traveling that direction. >> i wassing checking the weather -- i was checking the weather channel and checking on google to see my flight schedule. it says it's on time. so it's all right. >> reporter: is it supposed to snow when you arrive? >> it

here at sfo, they do have cancellations today. the duty manager said they have about a dozen flights that have been canceled so far. many flights were supposed to be headed to places like chicago, boston, baltimore. this morning in the terminal, we've seen people trying to get scream wherever they can, hoping for a flight out today. the bitter cold weather has snarled traffic around the country. in the past three days, more than 8,000 flights have been canceled nationwide. even those lucky enough to get on the flights are bracing for major delays. we talked with one man who was bumped from his flight yesterday. he's hoping to fly out late tonight to get home to toronto. he's trying to keep a positive attitude about anything. >> you can't blame the airlines or the people. i think we're keeping mother nature at work. we're doing the best we can to cope with it without getting irritable and getting unreasonable with anyone. >> reporter: what's making it more difficult to recover from this wave of cancellations is that the airlines in

i'm jeff bush at sfo kron 4 news. >>anny: in other bay area news,a woman is being called a hero after calling police about the suspect's car in an antioch kidnapping last week. seven year old natalie calvo was found safe just a couple hours after her abduction on friday. roxanna raim noticed david douglas's strange behavior as he walked into the target she worked at in pittsburg friday morning. she then went back to the office and watched him on the surveillance cameras. douglas eventually left the store and went into the parking lot where he hung because of his bizarre actions, roxanna wrote down the license plate number from his gold toyota camry. later that night, there was an amber alert for 7 year old natalie calvo was kidnapped. douglas' description and car fit what roxanna saw earlier. roxanna called authorities and 2 hours later, police were at her door thanking her for cracking the case. friday's kidnapping of seven- year-old natalie calvo finished with a happy ending. she was found safely just a couple hours

we have team coverage for you tonight, but first, we go to -- live at sfo. how are the travelers dealing with this setback? >> they're doing the best they can. an airport spokesman says a total of 66 flights were canceled here at sfo today, that includes 23 departing flights and 43 arriving flights. a plane actually slid off the runway at jfk in new york this morning and went into a snow bank after landing. no one was hurt on board, but the incident prompted authorities to shut down jfk for about two hours. affected cities throughout the day include chicago, new york, boston, newark, washington, d.c. and philadelphia. and we found several passengers here at sfo who are being told they won't be able to get to their destination for at least another day. >> we're used to traveling with a military, but this is just flat out ridiculous. it took us -- yesterday just to get you know, any form of a ticket to get back to anchorage, so my feet are sore, everybody else is upset and i feel bad for these guys. >> i got an e-mail saying my flight would be canceled for tom

first to christismith at sfo. been a frustrating couple of days for travelers here at sfo particularly those on jetblue. the weather has been beautiful here in san francisco, but not where they are trying to get to. i spoke with a duty manager, he says still 12 flights canceled this morning in and out of sfo, mainly to the east coast, speaking with travelers have been spending time the family and friends between hotels and trying to rebook flights, trying to get home. they are telling us they are not being delayed for hours but sometimes for a couple of days with their initial flight canceled on sunday. we have new video of the line here at jetblue and the international terminal as they try to play catch-up. one man told me he has been moved to three nights already. i saw him at the counter again and he had not gotten a flight yet. yesterday flights were suspended at jfk, laguardia, newark, boston for jetblue. that allowed 17 hours for the crews to service the planes. it's so cold. one traveler said he was due bac

of course, they canceled about 50 flights here at sfo last night. a lot of those people just stayed at the airport, didn't bother getting a hotel, slept here and are now getting on flights. so that's affecting a lot of people who are trying to get on an airplane right now. but the good news is that not a lot of departures are affecting the passengers for now. but we'll check on see. we talked to some people who spent the night at the airport and we'll have that coming up in the next half hour but for now, could be a worse here at sfo. lawrence karnow has the latest on the weather conditions all across the country and here in the bay area. here he is. >> yeah. i think we'll see a ripple effect as people get up and see a lot of problems with the airlines all across the united states. this is the reason why a very serious storm system. one for the record books making its way along the northeast. subzero from the south -- subtropical moisture air coming from the south and cold air from the north and pounding areas along the northeast united states. some

our reporter is at sfo with the latest on that story. katie? >> good morning, matt, i have been inside the terminal here reading the boards. get this, all flights arriving from john f. kennedy are canceled but all flights departing are still on time. i talked with the duty manager this morning trying to get an explanation and he says we are in a wait-and-see mode at sfo so we know john f. kennedy is closed right now because of snow and it is going to be closed until at least 5:30 this morning our time so we have to wait-and-see what happens whether it re-opens. in the meantime, sfo is expecting delays, significant delays, at 45 to 60 minutes for any flight headed to the eat coast. we know that u.s. air has canceled 20 flights to philadelphia this morning. sfo yesterday saw 52 flights canceled headed to the east coast and they expect something similar to that today with possible worsening conditions. we checked with oakland and san jose and both aiports showing some canceled flights coming and going. the bottom line, the take home message, check
