united flight 35 originally headed from sfo going to osaka, japan. it had to be diverted to lax today. this is video of it landing there. the faa will be investigating. as it is landing, you can see all eyes on the landing gear. there are other tires that are able to absorb the impact. again, no injuries on the plane, nor on the ground. we are going to continue to follow this breaking news as the faa investigation goes on. >> thank you. >>> aviation expert robert somewhat joins me now live. thank you so much for joining us. very unsettling seen there at sfo seeing that tire fall off just moments after that plane took off. quickly did the pilots know what was going on before they were able to report it to air traffic control or did air traffic control know before they did? >> that is a really good question. it is most likely that the pilots themselves would not have even known. this is a big airplane, a heavy jet. just having a tire assembly follow-up would not even be noticeable by the pilots of that airplane. >> why do you think the pilots would cho

spent his day at sfo. it was quite a messy morning for people flying out of that international terminal. so how did they get around all of that? >> reporter: one of the things that was very interesting as this demonstration was going on was not just they were at different parts of the international terminal but they were actually moving around inside the international terminal trying to block as much as they possibly could. let's show you video that was an interesting thing that we noticed. there was protesters who were set up across an escalator coming into the international terminal and passengers coming up the escalator literally had to climb over the protest line. so it was coming to the airport is already kind of an interesting experience for travelers. it was a whole lot more challenging for a lot of them this morning as well. but surprisingly the airport staff was able to kind of move people around to different parts of the airport so they could get passengers to their planes on time. one of the thi

thursday, a flight from balance dollars before it landed at sfo.lier this week on monday, a flight headed to sfo from australia had to turn around mid flight after fluid was seen spewing out of the right lending year. a japan bound united airlines lost the wheel after takeoff from sfo. that feel crushing on the cars in the parking lot below. and then today this happened. >> it keeps coming back to san francisco and that is my concern. this is a major maintenance base and a major hub for united as they continue to be san francisco centered. >> reporter: another aviation expert tells nbc bay area, the large metal pieces are removed during the 737's engines. and that they are supposed be tightly screwed back into place, after undergoing a final inspection to make sure they are reattached securely, and like mccarron says, they are all braced for immediate concern for investigators. >> what we will do is look back on an issue and see who did it and who is effectively the workout is done. >> but united does much of its maintenance work at sfo in place 35

today another emergency, this time on a united flight from australia here to sfo. this is at least the fifth emergency landing involving united airlines in about a week. here's what we know about today. this is the takeoff from the sydney airport there in australia. just ten seconds into the flight, you can see some fluid spewing from the plane. it appears to be coming from the right rear landing gear. the boeing 77-300 jet continued over the ocean for a while before turning around. video from a passenger shows the crew dumping fuel before landing. the plane did land safely back in sydney. then there was last thursday. a wheel fell off the united 777-200 jet from sfo to japan. there it is. the wheel just falling off. it smashed down into the parking lot into two cars at an employee parking lot there at sfo. and then last friday, a united airbus 320 heading from sfo to mexico city had to reroute to l.a. because of a hydraulic issue. so really what's happening with united airlines? let's bring in our aviation expert and retired pilot doug rice. doug, nice to have you

it initially diverted back to sfo. but then that plan changed. it was diverted again and landed safely at lax this afternoon. this is the plane on its approach. there to lax. again. it did land safely around one 30 pm. it was then immediately surrounded by emergency crews. we have team coverage this rob nesbitt and dan kerman are both standing by at sfo. dan will start with you. take us through what happened here. well, you know, everything was the plane's tires fail off crashing into vehicles in an airport employee parking lot. the boeing 7, 7, 7, was then diverted to los angeles where it landed safely. and passengers were transferred to another plane. investigators will now look into how this happened. they usually put the whole wheel assembly. >> on a on an airplane when they change the charge and it's possible i hope i don't want to say it because it's very embarrassing. they may not have secured the real property we'll know about. this definitely find out. the good thing is that nobody got hurt. crew did excellent job so that the air traffic

plane taking off from sfo, heading to japan. you'll see it as we've highlighted. this video was shared with us by cali planes. that tire fell and bounced and smashed into cars in a parking lot. a fence was also mangled. the good news is no one was hurt. the plane had taken off from sfo runway 28, right 28 r as the plane lifted off the ground, the tire just fell off. it plummeted t the ground, hitting as i s seral cars in the sfo employee parking lot before bouncing over aence and landing in the hertz rental car lot near the end of the runway. as you can see on this map that we've put together for you. that tire eventually was loaded onto a pickup truck. there it is and driven away. big tire. we have not been told where in investigators took it, but it's about four feet in diameter. the plane made an emergency landing less than two hours later at los angeles international airport. came in safely. no one on board was hurt, so a safe ending, thank goodness, but a scary incident for people on the plane and on the ground as well. abc seven news reporter tara campbell h
