[laughter] >> this evening we have a presentation regarding the district pathway to teaching and we have our chief academic officer brent stevens and interim officer daniel menendez. >> commissioners, good evening. i'm brent stevens. we're happy to have a brief opportunity this evening to present on a set of programs that are designed to provide san francisco unified with a pipeline of teachers, as they prepare to become teachers and enter into our classrooms. over the last two years, we've invested in a range of new programs that permits san francisco unified to have much-expanded portfolio of pipeline options. so we hope briefly to present one of those options to you. and then we'll focus a few additional slides on pathway to teaching. pathway it teaching is a brand-new alternative teaching program that we launched this school year. we have 85 intern teachers working through pathway to teaching. what i would say, we want to talk to you about ou

i'm a student of sfusd. i now have a masters in kinesiology, which is the study of human movement and fitness. i am up to date in all the research and legal battles when it comes to p.e. and especially of this district. kids that are physically inactive as youth will likely be as adults. physical inactivity leads to high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol, certain cancers, cardiovascular diseases. recently obesity among youth has doubled. some of this generation will not out live their parents due to physical inactivity, and physical inactivity has resulted in knocking off at least 20 from people's life. we get a memo from the high school lead office on december 20, 2017 addressing the latest board policy changes for p.e. behind every p.e. teachers' back. here's from highlights. students 16 years aold with tw years of high school can exempt p.e. this means all the work that went into idab. wells high school and the gym that we put in for after school is going to be used for nothing. students can fail

heading home campaign helped to raise $31 million to help house homeless families with children in sfusd. and thanks to our key partners, the goal of housing 800 homeless families by 2020 is within reach. mayor le'coe -- mayor lee co-hosted the gala that raised funds for sparks. he's done countless school visits, fundraised, collected donations. he did city hall tours. and everywhere he went, young people admired him and he will be deeply missed. my hope is that our future mayor, whoever that may be, will recognize that the school district is a great partner and will ensure that education stays a top priority. with that, i want to thank all of you for supported mayor lee and for the support that he gave it our school district. i'm here tonight in my nominal role as the california dashboard coordinator for sfusd and one of the things that as part of -- so, the california dashboard is the new accountability system for california. a new version was just released on december 1st and one aspect of it is that schools are asked to -- school districts are asked to acknowledge that they have -- whether they have met or not met a number of local priorities. and the six local priorities -- actually four for the district and two additional ones for the county are listed on the page. if you notice they are all direct from the lcfs. they are part of the budget book and the l-cap report and really the actions related to them are very well detailed in the budget. and so, any actions and data reported to them are there. as part of the accountability system, the state has asked us to perform -- use some self-evaluation tools and determine whether we've met or not met our progress towards these. so, i'm happy to report tonight that based on all my -- based on our use of these self-evaluation tools and thanks to all the diffe

so oftentimes, communities looking for data from departments, governments, and we get a story that sfusd or others are putting out for us. we need ourselves or independent bodies, to be able to read the variables ourselves. get the raw data ourselves. and it's only because we want to also share in the story and understanding exactly what is occurring to make sure that we're getting closer to fixing the systems that are broken, that are challenging our families. and oftentimes, that becomes a hindrance. kevin? >> thank you, commissioners. and so i think for coleman and our work with families, data is a key, fundamental part of it and making sure that that data is something that is understood by people and used to change the outcomes that we see within the public school system. theres a lot of negative outcomes for students historically, so we want to be sure that whatever is happening is working to help solve the problems. i kind of broke my talking

. >> reporter: according to sfusd, 88% of african american students failed to test proficient or better in math this past year. san francisco's naacp president amos brown sounded off on this achievement gap in the l.a. times calling this a state of emergency demanding answers from the district. >> that state of emergency has always been there in my opinion. >> reporter: the president of the san francisco unified school district, the district promising to decrease the gap by 2021. >> the gap has decreased, but we have a lot more work to do in terms of achievement. >> reporter: that's true in graduation rate up to 71% this past year for -- rates up to 71% this past year for african american students compared to 56% in 2009, but the math results tell a different story. in 2012 36% of african american students were proficient in math. that's down to 12% today. >> often kids of color don't always get the direct attention they need. >> reporter: after school coordinator trey russell sees this struggle daily and says the district needs to dedicate more resources if it ever hopes to make a dent
