all we're asking as an sfusd mother who has put five kids through the sfusd school system, as a product of sfusd, i'm asking you to consider and just consider to put this on the ballot and let the people decide. let the people decide if education for our children is worth more than corporate tax relief. thank you so much. [applause] >> good evening. my name's michelle parker. i'm a parent of now two sfusd students. my oldest just graduated. i'm not going to repeat a lot of what you've already heard, but i do want to say that we've seen a lot of recent evidence that there's an appetite to reform prop 13, and i think that's important to where we are right now. so i think if we can get this measure onto the 2020 ballot, i think we'll see some movement. it's a really great position that we find ourselves in. i think the projections measure that there are $8 billion in tax breaks that corporations have been benefiting from every year, and that 4.5 billion of that could go to our schools or would go to our schools if we're able to pass this measure. i think that it's really important for sfus

it's called the sfusd environmental science center at fort funston. we have over an 8,000 square foot classroom, hundreds of acres in our outdoor classroom. we serve over 1300 students a year, mostly from title s schools, and the ese has been around for 40 years serving our district. we've always had a teacher on special assignment running the district -- running the program, sorry, along with classified naturalists. suddenly, within the last few weeks, curriculum instruction which is where we're housed, even though we're a school, so maybe we should be in lead, c.n.i. decided that a teacher on special assignment is no longer necessary, so their plan is to have only classified staff running san francisco unified school district's environmental science center. as a t.s.a., i work with the -- all sorts of s.f.u.s.d. departments, building and risk management, and more in order to make sure that our facilities and programs are safe and successful for all of our students. i lead a team of two amazing classified naturalists to modify and adapt our curriculu

again, sfusd welcome day picnic is sunday, june 3, 12:00 to 3:00. i'm looking forward to our upcoming graduations for the class of 2018. nearly 4,000 graduating seniors will put on caps and gowns. i'd like to congratulate each and every one of them on this accomplishment and all of the elementary and middle school students that will be promoted to the next grade level as well. again, congratulations to our graduates. as you know, we're approaching election day on june 5 and many voters are completing ballots by mail. the san francisco ballot includes proposition g. this is the living wage and educators act. it's a parcel tax to raise approximately $50 million a year the great majority of the funds would be used to increase salaries of teachers, para educators and other school employees. some funding would be used to expand digital learning programs, recruit and retain teachers and provide additional support to our underserved schools and students. i cannot say how to vote on this or any other ballot measure, i want to encourage all san francisco vot

i respectfully request that sfusd publish a report -- [bell ringing] -- and i also request that sfusd publish a report regarding the alleged violations of 5.7 nondiscrimination. thank you for your time. >> thank you. next speaker, please. >> hi, my name is marianne kramer, i'm a teacher. and i'm here to talk about a situation at our school that i wanted to bring to your attention. basically to give you a quick brief outline of our school, as it has been. i've been there for 24 years. we're located in pore tella neighborhood, we're the second largest elementary school in the city. we once were the largest, but the program had to be phased out due to lack of space. we're highly diverse student body, free lunch for students and have many programs that have been at our schools for many years. spanish literacy, to chinese literacy. special ed, et cetera. we have been a calm, safe caring school where staff and students felt safe. we had a professional working environment, highly requested school by parents and teachers. and we received over the years national blue ribbon school award, the c

let me just say what an sfusd education can do. i want you to look at that black man sitting in the middle, superintendent of our public school system. got his entire education, all the way through his doctorate in the city and county of san francisco in our public school system. [applause] >> dr. vincent matthews, i want you to look at the president of this board of education, and the vice president of this board of education. both commissioner mendoza-mcdonnell and commissioner's stephen cooke got their education compliments of sfusd. and you can continue to look in this city, and you can see that a current member of the board of supervisors, supervisor cohen, who is over this district, got her education in sfusd. the current president of the san francisco board of supervisors is a public school graduate from san francisco unified school district, so we're going to stop letting people define our narrative. i'm going to let you know that an sfusd education is valuable, and also have one more thing to say, and i'm not trying to be

the last seven years of my career have been with sfusd. so for decades now, we have had overwhelming scientific consensus on the best way to teach kids to read. these best practices are summarized by what works clearinghouse in their recommendations for teaching foundational skills. instructional programs that are aligned with these findings are described as evidence based. we must ensure that any materials that sfusd invests in for reading skills are in fact evidence based. for children with markers of dyslexia, early identification is crucial. so quote from the e.l.d.-e.l.a. framework from the california department of education, the most effective intervention occurs at the first sign of difficulty and much can be accomplished with immediate action. so it is imperative that all students learning to read in sfusd have access to evidence-based instruction and foundational reading skills, and that universal screening for markers of dyslexia is a priority. students with signs of dyslexia must have access to structured literacy at first signs

i have a long history with sfusd. i retired ten years ago after 37 years serving as a teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent. now i'm the coexecutive director of united administrators of san francisco. i -- i really encourage you to approve this tentative agreement for our wonderful administrators that we have. they work hard, they're resilient, and they really do what's best for their school communities and their teachers. thank you so much. >> thank you, mrs. lee. it's always greet to see you, and i apologize that i had you under somebody else's. great. any other comments from the board or the superintendent? sorry, commissioner sanchez? >> thank you. i just have -- mr. scarlato, can you just give us some of the highlights of this tentative agreement, the public? >> sure. so for the school year 2018-19, all administrators will receive a 7% increase, and that will be followed by a 3% increase in 2019-2020, so that'll give them a 10% increase over the next two years. >> thank you. roll call vote, please. >>

i'm a future sfusd parent, and i also used to work in sfusd within the high schools. i used to work at phoenix high school back in the day, was on 16th and mission. so basically, i'm here today to support the indian education p.a.c., right, and so there was a list of ten points saying these are the things that we want to see happening this upcoming school year. and i watched that video of the meeting there in january about ten different times, that section. and i took notes. so in one of them, you know, the student delegate said that the washington high school school sites council would be meeting about the washington murals, and they would be making a decision whether how they felt about it or not felt about it, but they would be convening, and that within a month or two, that you all would hear back what -- what -- i don't know, anybody know? superintendent? anyone know what happened at that school site meeting? no one knows. no one in the local native american community knows, no one in the indian -- american indian p.a.c. knows. also with the ten points, commissio

sfusd has been responding and we are moving forward in resolving its. however. my son has to stay home because he kept questioning me about, mommy do i have a disability because i am black? he has been hurt, and he has been traumatized. i am asking you all she really begin to look at policy and change policy so if a parent and/or a student come and report that there has been the egregious behaviour and racial commentary, that this matter is investigated before the teacher post back to the classroom. my son stayed home while that teacher was still able to teach. i just want to talk about implicit bias training for all staff for implicit and explicit as well as to address racial matters with our school. thank you. >> we appreciate that. >> thanks to sfusd staff, whenever we heard about it, we address it as soon as we can. we have 15 trucks going throughout the schools every single day. we do have to cover 115 schools plus a number of other sites, and typical response time is about 20 to 30 minutes if there is an issue, as long as we have supply on hand. we keep -- just in case, we do have quality assurance measures happening in our kitchen before things go out, if there's an issue on-site, we'll have a response on it or a replacement or a plan b within 20 to 30 minutes, and of course, we -- we know that having food that's under quality means a kid doesn't eat, and all of us jump out of our skin when something like that comes up. >> and are those logged in. >> yeah. >> so can we see what those reports look like? >> yes. we have report logs, we review them on a weekly basis, on a daily basis, if needed if we notice a problem is happening more than once. >> i think it would be good for us to see what other schools -- where across the city there's been complaints or there's been challenges or there's been

my children, my grandson and my foster child has also attended sfusd. it took my strength and my courage to engage in this racist school system, whose job is to educate all students equally. it has been heartbreaking to watch other parents try to navigate through the district because they don't have engage in the political climate or contents they feel like they have been beaten down, discouraged and facing fear of possible retaliation from the administration or teachers for speaking up for the children. now that i am retired from the school district i will be working to help make sure parents develop a sustainable leadership parent organization so they can stand up together and demand the support in changes that need to take place to help close the achievement gap. it hasn't been a significant change since the fifties and the 2018. data has shown, year after year, we are at the bottom. up and down the scale, can you imagine that this problem has existed this long, people, naming a business or call -- corporation that continues to... of this happens her
