for each and every sfusd student. the c.a.c. focused on this work to ensure that all students are ready for their college and their career. also in addition to that, my son, nathan, is a dual enrollment student. he's 16 years old, and he will be graduating -- well, it's march 31, but the district changed it to june 2 or 3. so he'll be graduating. he'll have college credits. by the time he turns 18, he will be at the choice -- his school of choice, but he will have all his general requirements done, so his future is looking bright. so i as a parent really want to encourage dual enrollment, and i recommend every student at the age of 16 at least take one city college class so it can open up their minds so they can see that hey my future does look bright, and by attending city college, too, it helps them to -- it helps them to figure out hey, is this what i want to do? because college is not for everyone. so they might decide yes, this is for me. i want to pursue higher education and get my masters or get my doctorate an

i want to continue supporting sfusd. it has been a wonderful centre for our family. it is important for the board of education to support charter school such as creative arts which provides families with options and choices within the public school system, or risk losing more families to independent schools, curricular education -- education, or families deciding to leave san francisco. i hope you will vote to support the renewal of the charter of our unique and creative arts. thank you for your time. sfusd voices and other youth and as part of their independent news media, they do also report on sfusd issues and some of you may have been part of a panel recently called learning while black, which was organized by lee bromny. the station is housed at burten high school and they're an enter are prized unit of sfusd which means that other than enkind services and space, the station raises all of the cost of running the station and station on air 24/7. that funding primarily comes from membership and then secondarily from grants. so tina, has deep roots in both public media and education and she has worked in m. p.r. in editorial and production for morning editions, and mpr cultural desk. she founded extreme youth zone media, a training program for washington d.c. teenagers and served at a magazine covering asian neighborhoods in new york city. right before joining us here at klw she created and founded the audio journalism. she was there for 11 years. so i'm very happy to introduce her to talk about the work of the station. we also feel that her experience as an educator and public me

the yellow bar is sfusd. it was near the top, and there was several districts that are just really far behind. so it would appear that we are competitive. to -- they're competitive in the -- we're competitive in the teacher labor market in the san francisco bay area. whether we're in a sufficient competitive market to be able to live in the bay area is another topic for discussion. but some of the good news from daniel was at least 90% of the teaching spots were filled on the first day of school this year. retention is 91%, and those who are problems in the past when our compensation is lower. in terms of technology, these funds represent about one far of the district's technology investment in support programs like the help desk, tech support, and laptops for educa educators, so it's become an integral part of the baked in functionality of the district. that's it for that. >> so what's next? as a committee, we can agree on these things, and first, we believe that the teacher compensation is really important,

i served on the joint committee between this sfusd and the county of san francisco for four years soi know this committee very well and always thought that city college should be a part of the conversation and so i want to thank you and i look forward to hearing what's happening at this committee and also how these three institutions can add to the work and support each other. thank you. >> thank you. i also want to say just that this committee is very important and considering that a few years ago we also created another body to see how we could coordinate services for our children and families throughout the city. we're talking about living in the home or at school or graduating and going to city college, we're talking about the same person. so there's no reason we don't work together. a few years ago, the people actk to create our children, our families council in which they met quickly and did a lot of work in the first few years but more recently, it has not been as robust as i would like to see it. maybe this joint committee could be a stimulus to this council to get something

. >> we know in sfusd, pre-k has a high waiting list. >> okay. we don't have the ability to expand that or we don't have the capacity? >> i would love to expand that. >> and then, i want to reiterate a comment that was made by the uesf president, susan solomon. i have twins, and watching their development was really interesting. i did the same thing for both of them, and they are very different in terms of their development. i have one daughter who's a lefty. and i was concerned. i'm a former high school teacher, not an early educator. i was concerned how she would do with writing. i was extremely concerned, and now, she loves writing. she draws and writes a lot. when it comes to kindergarten readiness, it's not just about kids, it's about families and understanding what is readiness about? and lot of it is social emotional and interpersonal skills and social efficacy? i'm one of those folks and did the research and realized that's one of the most important things in terms of kid being kindergarten ready? i'm wondering around -- this guide is rea

we can see here, this is the kri performance on sfusd students who attended our program. there is upward trend from last year to this year, for african-american students, asian students and white students. we have a negative trend for latino and hispanic students. and we'll continue to look at this data and use them to align practices for pre-k to 3. we have more information around the kri in the appendix, because we had a presentation about it last year, too. >> we also wanted to pay attention to our absenteeism rate. we know that students have to come to school in order to be successful. and so here we have three years of student absenteeism data. the numbers they top are the percentages. when we took a more critical eye to look at this data and understand what is going on, we were able to discern a few things. one is that sometimes when parents are sick, they can't bring their kids -- pre-k kids can't come to school by themselves, there is parent illness. also we know during flu season we have lower enrollment. and then we have students with chronic health conditions.

i'm very excited to announce that sfusd has two more championship teams, the girl's varsity soccer team won the si f division championship defeating reading 4-0 and the northern california champion for the second straight year. also, the mission boy's varsity soccer team for the cif for-cal division soccer championship defeating hilmar high 4-1 and they are the northern california champions. the california department of education sponsors the california distinguished school's programme. in 2019 california is recognizing outstanding education programmes and lowell high school is the distinguished school and honoured at a ceremony in april. congratulations to lowell high school. finally, all of our district schools will be closed monday march 25 for spring break and offices will remain open and that concludes my announcements. >> good evening, everyone. today i would like start by making an update on our youth summit progress. last night leaders participated in the youth summit posters and our workshop presenters. this aims at the best professional development training for our inspiring s

[cheers and applause] >> thank you. good evening. i want to talk about a lot of rewarding parts about national boards and participating in the national boards but the two focal points are in regard to community and reflection. teaching can be an isolating profession, specifically for black and brown teachers and i think being a part of the national boards have helped me build a community within my school and larger within the school district and see what other teachers are doing because usually we don't see that and i think the reflection piece is super, super important for me and not just like a normal reflection, my day went well, the kids learned something. this is me analyzing every move, who i am and every move i make in the classroom affects student outcomes. i'm give a quick example of something i learned last week. i was teaching a les

five years later, sfusd is now going back on their word and taking away our children's right to a bilingual education after elementary school. as the largest school district, we think that the bay area, how can the school district so easily go back on their promise to our children? they should uphold guarantee to parents and students. it's caused our communities to lose trust in the san francisco school district. how do you expect a student to believe in the school system after the -- provide them with their bilingual education as promised? most important of all, the district's actions have left parents who have been supportive of our school district disappointed, helpless and hopeless. please take care of our -- we want chinese bilingual pathway in mlk, school year 2019-2020. thank you so much. >> we are here because we vote 2019-2020, we need mlk open the bilingual class for us. chinese bilingual teachers can no longer be used as a skill. six years is not enough time for the district to -- this program. personally, [inaudible] and chinese is in high demand. since it is -- and return quali

i also want to point out that we have partnered with sfusd to collect sogi data from youth in middle school, high school age, and also transitional aged youth through our youth surveys. these are anonymous surveys, but we do ask questions on sexual orientation and gender identity. they look a little bit different then the ones in our contract management system, and that is because we worked with the school district to determine which items to include, and they are the same items that are on the youth risk and behavioral health survey that the district administrators also. so we wanted to make sure we were in line -- in alignment with the district. this will be great. we typically get around 10,000 surveys back, so we will have that data as well to tell us more about the sogi fields for our younger participants, as well, they just won't be identified. >> okay. >> so i'm not going to read they're all of these, but these are just -- we were asked to provide a list of programs that potentially serve lgbt youth. these are the lists of programs served in our pilot year for transitional age

calling for which will be the first hearing in our newly formed joint committee with city college and sfusd. i'm calling this hearing together with supervisor marr on a recent proposal from city college that will make transformation or significant changes to their course offerings. what we know at this stage, due to significant budgets shortfalls, city college has created a plan that will decrease course offerings by one-third by 2025. potentially increase class sizes and lead to more students being in sections offered through the colleges online college, which has a soft launch in october. this is something that will make really significant changes in the experiences of students, the opportunities that are available to them. we have heard from school officials they're not cutting classes, but reallocating resources to make the college sustainable. so our goal is to have a better understanding on what these changes will be. how it will impact the college. and the different campuses around the city. i have particular questions around some of the impact on courses that are offered at the civi
