i am thinking of a couple i did when i was sg.here they were cases that fit within the rubric of our conversation today. mccutchen, a campaign financing case, shelby county, section five case. in one sense, it is easier in those cases in that you are doing your job. it is a federal statute and the constitutionality of the statute was called into question and your job is to defend that and that is what you are doing. in that sense, at least that subcategory of these cases, you are -- your role is clear and there is a little less ambiguity about it. in terms of the broader point, i think the point about whose ox is being gored is really important in these cases. that exact phrase came up in the more be hopper oral argument in which, that was a case about whether state courts had the authority to police partisan gerrymandering. early on in the argument, justice thomas asked a question framed around that phrase. it was about whose ox is being gored here. it reinforces the idea that really at the end of the day, it is just contesting p
