betty shabazz. ladies, forrest, thank you for joining us.fically on the woman you depict. because i've had the honor of knowing both of them. here at this event, sometime in the late 90s, they were incredibly formidable people, mothers of the movement, along with marley edwards, who we talked about on the show last week. i knew them and i knew them as a woman -- i got to work very closely with mrs. king because of my relationship with martin the third. and betty shabazz was like godmother of my two daughters. they carried on. and personally their husbands legacies. while continuing to carve out their own. opia, how do you spry -- describe the specific pressures these women faced as wives and widows? >> i can't begin to think of how hard the pressure was for them. they were the supporters, the main woman who were there to support these men, who we know have done an incredible work. and i think one thing about betty ands coretta was they had similar experiences. they had to hold down the home for weeks while their husbands were out, fighting a

and betty shabazz is my daughter's god mother.e civil rights movement and betty shabazz kept malcolm strong. i used to hear them talk about this when they would talk to me in private. >> i love the fact you said they weren't just housewives. you don't have a malcolm x and a dr. martin luther king, jr. without womens, wives who were also dreamers, who were also activists. these were women who challenged their ideals and really parcelled through a lot of the sermons and messages they were going to speak about. they gravitated to these women for that, that they had a mind of their own, that they had dreams and aspirations of their own. history has done this weird thing of making it seem as women have now just started to have agency as if that wasn't a thing ever before. so one of the things i love that this show is doing is highlighting the fact that coretta and betty were women of agency that really fought side by side with their husbands for the movement and for their community. >> obviously the relationship to men was fraught. the

betty shabazz, coretta scott king, and myrlie evers was the sorority nobody wanted to be in. the same thing. >> exactly. >> evers was the first civil rights widow. he dies in june '63. john f. kennedy, the president, had given the speech in which he used some of medgar's language. they were both world war ii veterans, and he had been pressing the kennedy administration to do more on civil rights. to send federal troops to mississippi to protect black people. he was integral. he was literally going, had he not been assassinated, was going to be in d.c. to testify for the civil rights act. he was one of the ones pushing for it. his language about first class citizenship was picked up by people like fannie lou hamer. he was integral to it. when he was killed, to your point, dr. king had given his initial version of the speech he gave on august 28 at the march on washington, he gave it in detroit, as you know, rev. >> right. >> to 22,000 people. one of the lines that later gets cut out of the speech in d.c. was, "i have a dream that one day, people like medgar evers and emmett ti
