william shaffer in at vanderbilt -- safner at vanderbilt university. do you believe that the battle against ebola is being lost? and if so, how can it be won? >> laura, it's a very serious matter. the ebola epidemic continues. we still haven't gotten our arms around it. we need a combination of things. we need better clinical care. that will allow patients to come from home to the hospital. if they get out of their home, they won't be able to infect family members. they'll need good treatment and then we also need a public health response. we'll need to find out all the contacts of those individuals and keep them under surveillance. we need a lot more education of the population so that they recognize what the dangers of ebola are and how to prevent its transmission. all of that needs a lot more effort. we haven't succeeded yet. >> now, why is this ebola outbreak spreading so much more quickly than previous ones? >> well, the previous ebola outbreaks occurred in rather remote rural villages, so when detected, the teams could go in and generally get the
