i was struck when i was there in july of 2010, senate shaheen and i and two others were there. our visit overlapped with a visit from the vice-president. we had a moment in about two hours where we could sit with him and he had just come from a series of meetings with the various iraqi officials, trying to work out the politics and the typical management of that and doing everything he could to bring the sides together. it is one thing to have ideological differences and another thing when it has its origin and ethnicity and other divisions. it is particularly difficult to bring the sides together. i was also struck by how capable the vice-president was in dealing with this. he spent a lot of time with all these players. there is still a real concern now that those politics have not worked as well as we had hoped. in particular, there is a concern or maybe an allegation that pride ma ministeriliki has become more authoritarian. i want to get your sense of that and the overall politics. that will be the underpinning of progress. they cannot make progress unless the man as those

shaheen: mr. president, i rise today to again raise my concerns that we see action in the house to pass the senate bill reauthorizing the violence against women act. we need to continue this critical funding for survivors of domestic violence. now we've heard in the discussions on the senate floor about the protections that are offered in the senate bill that have not been included in the bill that the house has pending. they are protections that would help women on college campuses, women on tribal lands, gay and lesbian victims and immigrants. but it's really important for us to remember not just those provisions, but all of the other ways that the violence against women act has benefited not just the victims of domestic violence, but really all of us. because domestic violence isn't just a women's issue. it affects all of us. it affects our entire economy. it affects our families. the centers for disease control estimates that the direct health care costs associated with domestic violence are a

shaheen: thank you. anybod who's been outside today knows we had a beautiful day and the last couple of days have just been beautiful. so it's hard to believe that the summer is actually coming to a close. but as it does, i want to take a few minutes this afternoon to highlight something that's very important to us in new hampshire and to the country and that is tourism, particularly the outdoor industry association, and its importance to local economies in new hampshire and across this country. new hampshire's long recognized the importance of conservation and the economic benefits that come from supporting outdoor recreation. our beautiful state, like connecticut, has an abundance of natural treasures. the white mountain national forest, our scenic lakes, our coastline. we may only have 18 miles of coastline but it's beautiful, with beautiful beaches and rocky coasts. these treasures draw visitors from across new england and from really all over the world. protecting these natural resources is not just
