didn't take up track and field until now a junior at the university of new hampshire, dover's michael shanahan is one of of the top throwers in america east. >> i walked on as a freshman not really into the sport that much and then this program helped me dive right into it really quick. reporter: as a sophomore he won the expect in the hammer throw, qualifying to compete in the championships. >> the hammer and the weight are similar, it's my favorite in that way, indoor i love the weight because i'm a big guy, and out door i love the hammer because i'm a big guy and it's a little thing. reporter: he's in the business school and received academic all american status last spring. >> i live 15 minutes away from here. my parents both went here, my sisters both have been here. so it's in the family at this point. i like the area, didn't want to leave it. reporter: michael says his goal for this season is to make first time all american, which would take a throw of about 71 feet. this week's home town hero. >> volleyball tournament, u.n.h. will play at florida in the first round tonight. u.n.h. is t

michael shanahan, of dover, is a junior thrower for the university of new hampshire track and field team. he walked on to the program as a freshman. after just one season of experience in high school, but quickly made an impact. last year, as a sophomore, michael won the indoor conference championship in the weight throw, and then the outdoor title in the hammer throw. he' s an information systems major, and also received academic all-american honors last spring. >> last year i ended up academic all-american. this year was first-team all-american. i' m hoping to open up a little thomas -- really demolish it. i want to come back and they' ll that distance goal in all-american this year. jason: the unh hockey team has a big weekend ahead. 2 hockey east games against their rival to the north, the umaine black bears. unh has been struggling a bit, while maine is playing pretty well. should be a good series. they play friday night in orono, and saturday in durham. >> it' s a difficult place to play. you can forget about records when it comes to a matchup between these two schools. >> they' ve
